Comparisons of Branded DVD Players
« on: Sep 02, 2004 at 02:20 AM »
Has anybody seen these models? The local model number may be different but it's the new breed of universal players coming from Toshiba. They play DVD-A, SACD, MP3, WMA, etc. Rave reviews on performance for the money. Wondering if any local dealers have these yet?

MOD NOTE:

please post all branded dvd comparisons here.

will merged all old comparo threads here. keep on posting.

Ok, I've discovered that the Toshiba SD-2950 (same as 3950) is available locally. Is this true? Is there a newer model now?

The toshiba sd-2950 is the latest i've seen so far.  it costs ~8k pesos if i'm not mistaken. Found one in automatic center.

Thanks John, you must wake up early :P
I hope the new Toshibas make it to the market soon. They could give Pioneer some real competition.

Just got a toshiba sd-2960 (similar to the sd-3960 in the states) on a whim. This dvd player has only two analog audio outputs and an optical and coaxial digital out. Played some cd's on it (plan to use it for cd only) and its a sweet sounding player , though not really detailed as when i played tracks like morning dance, it seems lacking...sort of like some instruments were missing. On vocals though this player shines, even at high volumes it doesn't sound harsh. a relatively cheap dvd player that works well as a cd player IMHO, now time to do some mods >:D

I'm thinking of getting a new one (i have lots of DivX files on CD and a few DVD-As no SACDs yet, I currently have Philips 727K) price wise, pioneer is more expensive by more than 3K.  or should I opt for Philips 642K instead.

Thanks.

If your still planning to get PHILIPS DVP642K, suggest to buy this instead PHILIPS "DVP 5500S" upgraded version w/ actually same price, last seen this about P6650..
Some of the dealers already facing out this item PHILIPS DVP642K (as rumors also says)..

all features side by side, except DVD-A, would the 5500 be better than the 676A?

I think the Philips 5500s is really good for audio.  Just bought one and wow, galing sa SACD.  I guess it's because SACD was started by Philips and Sony.  for the additional 3k, the pioneer model has squeezed in a DVD-Audio capability, digital outputs - optical and coax, S-video, and all the bells and whistles.  Makes me wonder if the rumor is true that it really converts the DSD track on SACDs into PCM to bring costs down.

Philips 5500s on the other hand has minimalist features but it is more likely to decode the DSD tracks directly and not convert to PCM.  After all, they have to utilize their own technolgy and not "cheat' on it since somebody will surely dissect the 5500s and find out if it is truly SACD playback capable.

Missing the svideo connection is manageable but not without the toslink/digital out. that will make the 5500s not a viable option for the serious home theater fan.

Hi Superman!

I'm not so sure but as far as I know, one of them has built-in DTS decoder and has a 5.1 channel RCA output. I think it's the 667A, but I'm not really sure.

i believe both models decode DTS. the older 667a is more expensive though. baka magkaiba ng components na ginamit. i recall reading somewhere here that the 667a uses burr brown DACs. i'm not really sure if i remembered correctly.

Yes, 667A uses better Audio DAC than 676A.

However...
Comparing with DV676A, I think its wiser to choose DV676A than 667A since DV676A supports DivX, additonal 2 bit video DAC (12-bit video), better video DAC and its only Php 8990.00 while 667A is about 13,990.00.

IMHO, the DV-667a is an all-arounder for me vs. the DV-676...the only advantage of the DV-676 is the Divx Function plus the additional 2-bit (10-bit vs. 12-bit) in the video...thanks again to JT for the inputs and the recommendation!...what's so good about the DV-667a is the Audio DAC, using Burr-Brown...this is an excellent CD transport for Audio...especially if you have an external DAC...thanks! 8)

Hi,

Thanks.  :)
