Why not? I've talked Nora plenty (tho not to death, I think). Vilma's run her life more sensibly, is more conventionally pretty (or at least prettier to burgis colonial-mentalitized eyes), even I'd argue more versatile and intelligent an actress than Nora. Really.

i like nora's performance in naglalayag. i like vilma but not in mano po 3. they should give the award though to judy ann for sabel. very complex and difficult role.

cross out kris aquino's name and replace it with izza calzado's for sigaw.
cross out claudine barretto's name and replace it with judy ann santos' for aicrape imasu.

wala masyado magagandang performances for lead actress this year.

ANG PINAKA-PABORITONG VILMA SANTOS MOVIES (NOVEMBER 9, 2008)

As expected, VILMA SANTOS gets the spotlight on this Sunday's ANG PINAKA, followed by her recent stint in PROUDLY FILIPINA. The panelists: Gina Alajar - Actress/Director; Lhar Santiago - Showbiz Reporter, GMA-7; Ronnie Carasco III - Writer/Entertainment Columnist; Erwin Santiago - Associate Editor, PEP; Ed Piano - Member/Advisor VSSI

        10. ALYAS BABY TSINA (1984)
          9. DEKADA '70 (2002)
          8. LIPAD, DARNA, LIPAD (1973)
          7. TAGOS NG DUGO (1987)
          6. ANAK (2000)
          5. BATA, BATA...PAANO KA GINAWA? (1998)
          4. PAHIRAM NG ISANG UMAGA (1989)
          3. BURLESK QUEEN (1977)
          2. SISTER STELLA L. (1984)
          1. RELASYON (1982)

I believe, RELASYON is Vilma's answer to Nora's HIMALA so it comes as no surprise why it was the no.1. I would have picked SISTER STELLA L over RELASYON as the top in the list. I'm surprised there's no BROKEN MARRIAGE, TRUDIS LIIT, DAHIL MAHAL KITA, and even SAAN NAGTATAGO ANG PAG-IBIG? These would have been part of my list. Not quite fond of her Star Cinema movies save for ANAK. One panelist implied that BATA, BATA was an 'upgrade' on BROKEN MARRIAGE. Your choices?

Good call I think on Dolzura Cortez--thinking back on every AIDS drama I've seen, and that stands up well to them.

But where's her other Ad Castillo movies? Pagputi ng Uwak Pagitim ng Tagak, Tag Init Tag Araw? Personally speaking, I think Burlesk Queen is the best thing she ever did (she wasn't the best thing in it, but she played the lead in arguably the greatest film she's ever going to be involved in). And what's wrong with throwing in Ikaw ay Akin? Nora doesn't own that picture, or totally blow Vilma away...

Funny, back then I thought PAHIRAM was just an okay and a usual vehicle for Vilma with my friend sharing the same thought. Until the movie grows through the years and would always be on the top movies of the 'star for all seasons.'

T-BIRD AT AKO would've also been in my list. I just love that movie. The confrontations and bickerings between Vilma and Nora are just too fun to watch.

By the way, my list in no particular order:

From a movie exhibit in Promenade Greenhills.

        1. SISTER STELLA L (1984)
        2. SAAN NAGTATAGO ANG PAG-IBIG? (1987)
        3. BROKEN MARRIAGE (1983)
        4. HAHAMAKIN LAHAT (1990)
        5. ALYAS BABY TSINA (1984)
        6. T-BIRD AT AKO (1982)
        7. DAHIL MAHAL KITA: THE DOLZURA CORTEZ STORY (1993)
        8. GAANO KADALAS ANG MINSAN? (1982)
        9. HAPLOS (1982)
        10.TAGOS NG DUGO (1987)

Best Vilma Santos' Movies? Let's see:

In no particular order:
1. Bata, Bata... Paano Ka Ginawa?
2. Pahiram ng Isang Umaga
3. Broken Marriage
4. Burlesk Queen
5. Sister Stella L.

Voila, that's it. I can't even come up with 10, hehehe. That super-hyped "Relasyon"? LOL. That is no much to "Himala" in my honest opinion.

         PAANO BA ANG MANGARAP? (1983)

GMA-7 is now airing their TV version of this komiks-based Vilma Santos starrer and no thanks to them. This very glossy soap opera style filipino melodrama (directed by no less than Mr. Edddie Garcia) is still watchable due mainly to the tested chemistry between Vilma and Christopher who plays Lissa and Eric. PAANO is just one of their numerous pairings although sadly this isn't one of their best. In the story, the death of Eric's dear brother Benny and Lissa' boyfriend brought them together in each other's arms eventually.

Just like her legendary 'kumareng' Nora, Vilma also had her shares of numerous unforgettable dialogues and this movie was no exception. Solid supporting players make this movie more entertaining than the whole story itself: Armida Siguion-Reyna (in a deliciously evil role of Christopher's domineering mother), the late Vic Silayan (who plays Eric's understanding father), Perla Bautista (fated mother of Lissa), Amy Austria (as the third party) and the late Jay Ilagan in a very short and marked role of Lissa's boyfriend Benny.

In such movies like this, a supporting character (usually a father or grandma and at times wheelchar-bound) usually suffers a heart attack and always ends up dead; and it's usually caused by witnessing the quarrels between the bida and the kontrabida.

Basil and Pilita lent their voices to sung the poetic theme. VIVA used to hire two singers to sing the same theme song that was both heard in a movie.

Two classic Vilma Santos starrer were released via Paragon, BIKTIMA (1974, Nilo Saez) and INSPIRASYON (1972, Ishmael Bernal). I'm hoping her other suspense/horror movies would be released as well.

I saw it with my own two eyes how the Sharon Cuneta starrer beat SISTER STELLA L at the box-office. The cinema was locked by the guard showing BUKAS LULUHOD ANG MGA TALA so that the people will not insist anymore to get inside!  ;D

The battle at the tills between Sister Stella L. and Bukas Luluhod Ang Mga Tala was actually a turning point for both Santos' and Cuneta's careers. It heralded the arrival of Sharon as a superstar in her own right (the press gave her her own monicker, Megastar), proved to everyone that she can draw in the movie-going crowds with or without the help of a leading man (notably her team-up with Gabby Concepcion), and eclipsed not only Vilma's career but also Nora Aunor's as well (her films released during that same year, such as Bulaklak Ng City Jail and 'Merika, bombed at the tills, same with Santos' Alyas Baby Tsina).
But as a footnote, time has been kind to Santos' and Aunor's movie legacies (Sister Stella L. and Himala, to cite just a few examples, are widely acknowledged masterpieces of Philippine cinema). Cuneta,on the other hand, has to wait til Laurice Guillen's Tayong Dalawa and Olivia Lamasan's Madrasta, to gain positive notice from film critics. True, these were good films, but certainly not in the caliber of Santos' and Aunor's best works.
