Im surprised no one's talking about the Emmys... Or is it being discussed in another section? I love Emmy Idol -Especially Will Shatner's reaction when Green Acres won :)

I'm not sure if our local cable station will air this year's nominations via CNN at 9:30PM but this online radio station will broadcast it much earlier at 8:30PM.

Amen! I can't believe anyone in their right minds would consider Two and a Half Men as an Outstanding Comedy Series nominee while the CLEARLY superior show, Everybody Hates Chris didn't even get a Outstanding Writing nomination for Chris Rock.

Even with new rules and system in place, they STILL shut out programs from the WB and UPN from the major categories. No Veronica Mars. No Everwood. No Gilmore Girls especially no Everybody Hates Chris despite their respective critical praise.

I'm just happy that 24 got all those (well-deserved) 12 nominations for its' excellent 5th season. (If I would rank the shows I have been following this past season, I would have to put it on top.) I'm also glad for the nods for The Office, House, MD and Jeremy Piven for his supporting role on Entourage.

Now for my gripes: Nods for Two and a Half Men and Charlie Sheen ???  C'mon!!!!  None for Entourage for Best Comedy, Hugh Laurie for Best Actor (Drama), and Lauren Graham for Best Actress (Comedy/Drama/Wherever they wanna classify Gilmore Girls)?  Boooooo!!!

I was browsing through the complete nominations list, and was looking through the outstanding music and lyrics category...  despite how lackluster the show has become, SNL's "Lazy Sunday" still deserved a nomination in that category!!! it wuz robbed!!!

What?? No LOST??

And who in god's good earth put Two and a Half Men in their ballots? Geez.

When hot is now not: Housewives, Lost denied Emmy noms

As for Lost, the show may have also been hurt by the blue ribbon proceedings. Voters who weren't regular viewers of the show may not have been able to keep up with the show's rich mythology.

Leverence said 24 managed to avoid that problem by submitting its first episode of the season, which laid the groundwork for the year but wasn't hindered by a complicated backstory.

"If Lost in fact chose an episode that was midway into a very complex action and you had people in that room who were seeing it for the first time, there's a distinct possibility they might not have gotten it," Leverence said. "It might not have had that kind of resonance that a non-serialized program would have."

....

While guffaws of laughter were heard in the rooms when straight sitcoms like Two and a Half Men were played for the new blue-ribbon panels, shows like Housewives and Entourage, by their nature, contain fewer laughs.

"At the panels, the ha-ha comedies had 'em rolling in the aisles," Leverence said. "Whereas Desperate Housewives does a both a drama dance and a comedy dance. Having the dramatic elements in with the comedic perhaps tended to dilute the force of the comedic."

This also explains why Kevin James got that nomination.  >:(

I guess...  I'm not really familiar with the rules for this category, but I saw that one of the nominees is a song from MadTV (another sketch show, or as the Emmy's would call it - Variety or Musical), so I'm guessing a song from SNL should be eligible for the category...  the song was first shown on a December 2005 episode of SNL, so in terms of "cut-off period" eligibility, there shouldn't have been a problem... But, hey, the noms are out, and it would have been nice if the "song" had been recognized...

Get your, 2, NO, 6, NO, 12, BAKER'S DOZEN;D

This was the year the Emmy nominations were going to be different. Thanks to a new voting process--in which panels of specialist judges picked the nominees from shortlists of ten--the process was supposed to be more open to new talent and less likely to rubber-stamp whichever shows and actors had been nominated the previous year.

And they're... umm... different. But "different," much like when you use the adjective to describe the habanero-pepper cranberry sauce your Aunt Bess makes to liven up Thanksgiving dinner, does not always mean better. There are some new names and faces in the major categories--but many of them are simply old faces in newer, mediocre shows. (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Charlie Sheen, I'm looking at you. And sorry, but Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni? Did Law & Order: SVU suddenly become freaking Shakespeare after seven years?)

Worst of all, Emmy has made room for the "new" faces not so much by booting old, past-their prime shows (like gold-watch recipients The West Wing and Will & Grace) but much more deserving newer series and actors. Fine, I'll forgive Battlestar Galactica, which was about as likely to get a Best Drama nomination from the sci-fi-averse Emmys as the Earth was to be invaded by Cylons. But Lost? Wildly creative television phenomenon Lost? Winner of last year's drama Emmy Lost? I'm sorry--there is no planet on which Lost is inferior to Grey's Anatomy or The West Wing, and I defy anyone with sight and a functioning brain to argue otherwise.

Let's be charitable, though, and look at what went right. Lisa Kudrow probably got nominated for the wrong reasons--big-name actress in a showy vehicle--but deserved it for her unsparing, discomfiting portrayal of Valerie Cherish in the underrated The Comeback.  Jaime Pressly, who pops not just out of her outfits but off the screen as the venal, gum-snapping Joy in My Name Is Earl, should win supporting comedy actress. And 24 may partly be coasting on goodwill, but Gregory Itzin earned his spot as sniveling President Logan in this increasingly actor-driven show, as did Denis Leary for Rescue Me. The Office was a welcome comedy nominee, as to a lesser extent was Scrubs. (But Entourage should have gotten the flagging Curb Your Enthusiasm's spot.)  And Desperate Housewives, overrated in its superior first season, deserved the snubbing for its inferior second one.

But as for the oversights: good God, where do I start? Big Love, the best series vehicle for actresses in years, was pretty much shut out. (Ironically, it got a casting nod--apparently not for casting any actual actors, however.) How I Met Your Mother lost out to the inferior Two and a Half Men, probably for a lack of boldface names. (Neal Patrick Harris, get Denise Richards' phone number, pronto!) And not to overpraise the perfectly fine House, but how can it be nominated for best series but Hugh Laurie--whose performance is essentially the entire show--get stiffed as best actor? As for Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars--hey, same old song, different verse.

And apparently no new process can shake Emmy out of one old habit: nominating excellent actors and actresses in less-than-excellent roles. Stockard Channing, who would get an Emmy nomination if she were gagged, covered in papier-mache and forced to play a boulder, was rewarded for overacting in CBS' not-forgettable-enough Out of Practice. (Likewise Geena Davis on the embarrassing Commander-in-Chief and Blythe Danner for her caricatured role in Huff.) And the star-laden but stiflingly dull miniseries Into the West somehow became the most nominated show of the night.

In the end, though, these are just Emmy nominations, and if they weren't disappointing every year, they wouldn't be as fun, I'd like to thank the academy, at least, for giving me a few different things to grouse about this year. And for the producers of Lost, a bit of advice: sign up Stockard Channing.

I can only predict one winner: American Idol Season 5 over TAR (3time winner) Family Edition  for Reality Competition Category. American Idol is also nominated for Outstanding Musical something something.

Although I earlier stated on the Desperate Housewives thread that Marcia Cross deserved an Emmy win this year for her role on the show this season, I understand the snub in the "Best Actress in a Comedy Series" category. Her best acting on the show wasn't comedic, it was dramatic, and that would just be wrong - completely unfair to actresses who gave true comedic performances in the past year.

So if anything, I blame the producers of the show who decided to classify this "dramedy" as a comedy instead of a drama when they submitted it for consideration to the voters.

I don't think Emmy voters get "season screeners" like the "screeners" that Academy members get during Oscar nomination season.  If this was the case, then my theory for Lost not making it as a nominee for Best Drama series is its piss poor scheduling last season...  Lost's dense storyline doesn't really lend itself to extended, staggered breaks from the schedule...  I know I was pretty bummed by getting 2 new episodes, then 4 weeks of rerun hell, then 4 weeks of new episodes for sweeps followed by 4 straight weeks of rerun once again. To me, it felt like during the weeks that new episodes were being aired, nothing much was happening (although looking at the show's big picture, you know this isn't true), and once the show starts to pick up steam, they hit you with a string of reruns.  Honestly, I lost (no pun intended) my interest in the show around the middle of the season. I just decided to wait for the DVD and watch it in one sitting.

Unlike 24 which started in January, (and had a KILLER 4-hour premiere) and was able to air all its episodes every Monday without interruption, which only made the show all the more compelling to watch (and it really didn't hurt that the season was pretty darn good as well).  I'm pretty sure the guys at ABC realized this, because next season, they'll be doing a "Prison Break-type" season break with Lost.  They'll divide the season into two main parts, air the first part without interruptions, take an 8 week break (don't quote me on how long the break is. I'm just sure it's one long break), and then air the second half of the season without interruptions. Now, assuming that Lost is able to divide the season properly and give us a compelling season 3, then we may yet again see it nominated for next year's Emmys.

edit:  Just read the Variety link from Reuven Malter's post above... I guess the networks DO provide screeners, but not for full seasons...  If that's the case, then I can see why Lost wasn't nominated.  The episodes moved in a glacial pace this season (and each episode really depended too much upon the others -- again, no pun intended), unlike the first season, where virtually each episode was tight and can stand on its own legs.

I take it back. Kevin James deserves his nomination after seeing his tape submission. A generous Gold Derby member has posted most of the Emmy submissions here. You might want to check these out before they are removed. It's a vicarious way of living the life of an Emmy voter.  ;D

I disagree. I didn't like Kevin James's submission at all. Apart from the funny pole-dancing scene at the end, there's really nothing remarkable about that episode. Leah Remini and Jerry Stiller were better. He certainly did not deserve to get in for that over Jason Bateman, Zach Braff, Jason Lee and hell, even, Tyler James Williams.

TAR submitted last season's episode, Here Comes the Bedouin. It's the one set in Oman, where they had to look for the local delicacy buried in the desert. AI submitted the finale. Looks like TAR could still win. If not, I'm rooting for Project Runway.

See the controversial 14-second Emmy-nominated performance of Ellen Burstyn. There is no way they can justify the nomination.

THe link's not working.

I think Ellen Burstyn's nomination is a case of voters voting PURELY because of their admiration for the actress and did not bother to watch the movie before voting.

Christian Clemenson was in United 93. He played that bald guy who was sort of the leader of the passengers and was telling people what to do. I've heard from people that he's actually excellent in that role.

I see. Read in another forum that he had several money scenes last season. I'm not following Boston Legal that much (still on the first season c/o Star World) but will definitely check the second season out once it airs locally. I hope this does not mean that Bergen and Shatner are surefire winners.
