That's because they use data from two different sources. TNS for ABS-CBN and AGB-Nielsen for GMA.

ang gulo ng dalawang station na ito. abs claims they are now number 1, ganun din naman claim ng gma7. sino ba nagsasabi ng totoo?  ???

I think both are saying the truth; but you have to read the "small prints" under their respective ratings list.
GMA is number 1 in Mega Manila while ABS is number 1 nationwide. So I guess that would answer the question on who's winning the ratings game.

This is just my analysis though. I'm no expert on these things. hehe

Both stations claim dominance in Metro Manila, but the figures they release show that it's really a close race, with the difference being 1-5% only. I think that matters only to the advertisers, but in truth, claiming the number one spot with these figures isn't really something to brag about. Now if the difference is, say at least 20%, then that would give you a clearer picture of which station is really the more favored one.

I like the 90's format of both stations where they play programs on time and have varieties. Unlike today where you don't know what time a program starts and all they have is telenovelas/mexican/korean telenovelas from lunch to midnight. that's why i don't watch local tv anymore.

Yes, saw that in the earlier news today. I never liked this shady character in media because for me she lacks credibility. Forget that she came from CNN, she only reports the bad side of the Philippines. She's just justifying the role of media who meddles in everything. Too self-righteous for me and arrogant who has no concrete plans of elevating media people. For all I know most of them are tainted and involved in sensationalized journalism. Only a few have objectivity. The only media person I believe is Che Che Lazaro but she has gone tamed when ABS-CBN cuddled her.

Any other views on this person? Insiders from ABS-CBN or media with other insights on her?

Ressa may be getting a bad rap right now because of that hostage taking fiasco but she brought big changes to the news and public affairs department of ABS CBN. She actually helped professionalize it further by bringing in the knowledge she gained from working with international news organizations.

My close friend heads the GMA news department and I can tell you that they haven't even implemented most of the policies and SOPs that you would expect from a news organization. They don't even have a style guide in place.

They said she gained more enemies inside and out of ABS-CBN. So there's no "ethical" media standards in place for both media giants up to now? What about Jessica Soho in charge of GMA's news affairs team?

I agree, she did gain a lot of enemies. Kaya nga nagresign si Luchi Cruz. :)

I think there are ethical standards in place. I was referring to the work manual.

ngayon ko lang nabasa ang thread na ito...

i prefer ABS-CBN...

simple reason lang: yan ang nakamulatan kong TV station ever since... merong point in my life (college days) na naging maka GMA ako dahil lang sa anime... but in general ABS-CBN pa rin ako...

lumaki ako na laging TV Patrol ang pinapanood kapag balita.

Oh, thanks for sharing Indie! I guess ABS-CBN honchos still want the old way of doing things. Oh yes Luchi Cruz-Valdez is also good prior to joining ABS and ABC. But isn't she a partner of Che Che Lazaro in Probe before, they used to have good segments. No biases and just objective reporting.

I was wondering myself why Probe became a travelogue during its last years. Baka pagod na din sila Cheche Lazaro doing the hard hitting stuff.

I haven't seen the press release for Ressa' resignation but I'll try to sniff around tomorrow and find out what happened. One thing that I would give Ressa props for is the huge improvement in the way the news is written in ABS CBN and ANC. I'm a poor judge of writing in Pilipino but I notice that it sounds better with the ABS broadcasts compared to GMA's. In terms of the English reporting, hands down ABS is the winner. ANC's reportage is very good. Have you ever listened to QTV's late night news when it was still in English? It was atrocious. It became a game between my wife and I to spot as many grammatical mistakes during the broadcast. Another friend of mine was in charge of editing the news for the QTV English broadcast and he said it's a losing proposition. The writers GMA hired are rank amateurs. Mahina talagang magsulat. I'm not discounting the fact that it may be because of inexperience, but in my time (now I'm sounding old) we could write quality news articles even when were fresh from college. I guess this is an indictment of sorts on the kind of education our children are getting nowadays.

Good observations Indie, but GMA had good talents before when Tina Monsod-Palma was reading the news after Edsa. Most of them are UP/Ateneo/Maryknoll/etc. masscom products. Yes agree, ANC has a good pool of writers up to now because they have a different target audience. More on the upscale viewers like businessmen and educated professionals. Q is more on the masses so I'm wondering what's the difference in their offerings in Channel 7. Parang pang longkatuts o yung mga low-rated shows ng 7.

Do you think the young Patricia Evangelista has potential?

Oh yeah, the 70s and 80s GMA was at the top of its game. Magaling talaga.

Patricia Evangelista's an excellent writer. We'll see where she goes with it. However, I've heard some not-so-good things about her. Mayabang na daw.

Ah talaga, gaining popularity na eh. She could be the next "it" reporter if she continues to offer a different perspective on issues. But I think her segments have a different videographer/director (kung tama man yun) but not sure if she has a hand on some shots. May konting "lalim" na at sana wala pa ring bias pero she has more to learn. Medyo cross-eyed lang yata yung bata kaya baka di pumatok sa TV, she used to be in Y-Speak right?

Was browsing through this old topic and it is quite interesting how the competition between the 2 networks has evolved through the years. Nothing have changed yet lots have changed in 8 years .
