ABS-CBN or GMA Topic (the return!)
« on: Jul 30, 2005 at 06:27 PM »
There seems to ba a glitch in the software and this topic:

ABS-CBN or GMA? Who's the Best for YOU?

seems to be lost within board although you can do replies to it, the topic  still remains  'invisible' under the Pinoy Entertainment.

While our Kagawads are working on the solution, let's continue the discussion under this topic and when everything is normal, this can be merged with the original topic started by Mr. Big Boy last Dec of 2002.

And this was my substantial post to that topic that failed to 'resurrect' it:

ABS-CBN and GMA7 was supposed to slug it out in San Francisco last weekend. Is it true that the ABS CBN crowd was humongous and the GMA show was relegated to a mere 'mall' show? (Seems like Cebu fiasco all over again for GMA7). I saw on TV ABS's San Francisco show (which is way much better than last week's show). Never got to see GMA's show last Sunday. Is it true they went on 'best of' episode again (another term for replay). Maybe GMA is post producing their taped US show to add additional audience   ;D ;D ;D

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp extended its fall after the company reported weaker net profit for the third quarter, reflecting lower air-time revenues and higher expenses, dealers said.

In early trading, ABS-CBN was the composite index's top loser, down 0.50 peso or 3.33 percent at 14.50.

Its Philippine Deposit Receipts fell 0.75 peso or 5.00 percent to 14.25.

ABS-CBN's net profit for the third quarter was 158.9 million pesos, down 9 percent from 174.5 million pesos in the same period last year, as air-time revenues were weak, reflecting lower ratings of its television programs.

Operating costs were also higher compared to a year before.

For the first nine months, net profit fell 53 percent from a year earlier to 344 million pesos.

Wowowee wows Cebu
By Leah C. Salterio
The Philippine Star 11/25/2005

"...Cebu caravan reinforced ABS-CBN's dominance in the province, as
well as the network's affinity with the local residents. Cebu
consistently stands as solid ABS-CBN territory, where the network
enjoys a stronghold of the ratings. Ratings provided by the
Philippine Survey and Research Council (PSRC) for the second quarter
of 2005 showed ABS-CBN Cebu had a 63 percent audience share,
compared to its competitor which only registered 17
percent.

The same survey showed that ABS-CBN also continues to lord it over
all the other networks in other provinces like Davao, Bacolod,
Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Zamboanga.

Meanwhile, in the AC Nielsen official ratings from Oct. 4 to 29,
Wowowee also bested its noontime rival Eat Bulaga, with 17.4 percent
vs. 5.8 percent
.

The Cebu caravan had the full support of the ABS-CBN Regional
Network Group (RNG) headed by Ron Valdueza, with Visayas cluster
head Jerry Bennett, area manager for Cebu Tata Cinco Sy and
marketing manager Trixie Tolentino..."

GMA-7 News has got to have the corniest, and the most annoying OBB's for their newscasts. Examples:

 24 Oras
 Saksi
 Emergency
News on Q (on channel 11)

Is QTV No. 3?
By CARLOS BANAAG

One week after QTV-11 began broadcasting (on the eleventh day of the eleventh month), the new channel’s numerologists were already crowing that it was the third highest rating television station in Metro Manila.

Until last month, ABC-5 had claimed the dubious distinction of being the No. 3 network. Thus the question on everyone’s mind is: Has QTV really dislodged ABC from its spot in the overall channel rankings?

This is not an issue that only concerns TV addicts and newspaper writers with nothing better to do. Research studies have shown that as the number of TV channels grows, viewers ironically tend to limit their surfing to fewer options. Whereas we used to cycle through all the free TV stations, in today’s hundred channel cable universe we’ve memorized (and can punch into the remote) the numbers for only two or three favorite channels. A channel that is perceived to be at least a bronze medalist is more likely than a non-placer to be included in the select few channels that are surfed or memorized.

Artistas, producers, directors and even lowly production assistants naturally prefer to be associated with the higher ranking networks. For the money. For self-validation. And for the money. If you can’t be Kapuso or Kapamilya, then you might as well be Kanumber three, right?

Advertisers also generally restrict their commercial placements to the top two networks, namely, GMA-7 and ABS-CBN. Every now and then, the ad agencies will throw a few pity spots to the others—more to the No. 3 network than to all the other also-rans because a No. 3 can conceivably become a No. 2, but a No. 4 will probably not. Ultimately, therefore, what is at stake here is a few hundred million pesos.

Is QTV No. 3? Based on the partial, unofficial results of only a few days of ratings, the answer seems to be Yes. Three things went its way: First, the television premiere of "Let the Love Begin" garnered double digit ratings, something ABC-5 only gets with the PBA Finals. Second, a handful of QTV primetime programs, notably "Ay Robot", "Pop Star Kids", "Day Off", "and "H3O", attracted decent viewership—nothing spectacular, but about twice the size of the audience of ABC-5. Third, no matter how bad daytime programming may be on QTV, it is still better than the endless loops of infomercials and music videos on ABC-5.

Defenders of Tony Boy Cojuangco’s network counter that it has only been a week and one hot movie does not a No.3 network make. Besides, they insist, the ratings of ABC-5 actually increased in the week of the QTV launch. Once the sheen of a new network wears off of QTV, viewers will see that ABC-5 is the network with more innovative concepts. 5 is the real alternative to 2 and 7. So they say.

The more meaningful inquiry to make is not whether QTV hit No. 3 in its first week of operation, but whether QTV can hold on to third place over a significant period of time. Does QTV have a viable medium to long-term strategy? Can it build a loyal audience base? Or should QTV be more appropriately named Pa-cuteTV?

The fundamental problem of QTV is that it is targeted at the core audience of GMA-7, that is, women. Contrast this with Studio 23’s strategy of going after upscale audiences while its mother network ABS-CBN appeals to the masses. Because QTV and GMA-7 have essentially the same basic target audience, success for QTV will most probably come at the expense GMA-7. The geniuses at GMA-7 (sarcastic malamang ito, hehehe) are probably hoping that QTV will steal more viewers from ABS-CBN, but by saying that QTV is "powered by GMA" they are actually inviting GMA-7 fans to switch to QTV. It’s still too early to tell how much of QTV’s ratings came by way eating into GMA-7’s ratings, but there are signs that cannibalization is taking place. For instance, on the night that Ogie Alcasid’s "Ay Robot" and "Day Off" premiered on QTV, one big loser in week-to-week comparative ratings was none other than "Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho" on GMA-7. These initial indications tend to lead to the conclusion that QTV might be another case of a misconceived brand extension that hurts the main product more than it helps grow the entire line. In the end, GMA-7 may have to dial down its support for QTV in order to protect its own market share.

The biggest success of QTV to date—"Let the Love Begin"—also came at a very high price for the GMA Network in another way. Whatever ratings that movie achieved and, more importantly, whatever advertising revenues it earned for QTV, these ratings and revenues are far less than what the very same movie could have brought in had it aired on channel 7. "Let the Love Begin" could have commanded around R200,000.00 per thirty-second commercial spot on GMA-7; but on QTV, advertisers could presumably be asked to pay only 10% to 20% of that rate.

Consequently, we can expect that after this first round of blockbuster movie titles, QTV will lapse into showing cheaper, perhaps older and less popular canned program materials. It is simply too painful for the GMA group as a whole to do otherwise.

With respect to locally produced shows including the newscasts and current affairs programs, QTV plainly went with "cheaper, older and less popular" from the outset. Again because GMA-7 and QTV are both targeting women, the best concepts and talents for this purpose are of course reserved for GMA-7 where they can earn more, and QTV is left with the not-so-good shows and secondtier talents. The GMA-7 propaganda machinery might argue that they have such a surfeit of toprank talent that they can fill two whole program grids, but who are they kidding? Comments heard from disinterested observers center not on QTV being no. 3 but on QTV being third rate. The most cutting remark is that if you’re a has been, a never were or a never will be, you can get a show on QTV. Aray. Hindi naman siguro.

At the end of the day, even with the odds stacked against it, QTV may be able to hold on to No. 3. We suspect, however, that such an outcome would have less to do with the inherent strengths of QTV than with the utter weakness of ABC-5. But that’s another story.

Mas ok naman yang mga yan kesa dun sa kabila ;D ANC is still best for me though.

If you're referring to these:

TV Patrol World
Insider
News Central
Weekend News

I must say malayo naman ang mga titles nito sa mga titles ng GMA Newscast, those are definitely better than those in GMA.

ABS-CBN sacks De Castro's show

First posted 01:01am (Mla time) Jan 12, 2006
By Marinel R. Cruz, Cynthia D. Balana, Christine Avendano
Inquirer
Editor's Note: Published on page A1 of the Jan. 12, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE LONG-RUNNING show "Magandang Gabi, Bayan" was pulled off the air because of Vice President Noli de Castro's "problems" with ABS-CBN management regarding his support for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, according to a network insider.

The insider told the Inquirer in a phone interview on Sunday that the Lopezes, owners of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., had "wanted to use" the weekly current affairs program "to attack the administration."

"When Mr. De Castro refused, it was made clear to him, 'Either help us or leave,'" said the insider, who is close to De Castro and his wife Arlene, and who asked not to be named for fear of loss of employment.

"Magandang Gabi, Bayan" (MGB) had its last show last Dec. 31, ending a run of close to 18 years that made De Castro famous as "Kabayan" and helped launch his political career.

It was produced by Bayan Productions, which is run by De Castro's wife, Arlene de Castro.

The last show was co-anchored by the De Castros' daughter, Katherine, with Erwin Tulfo and Henry Omaga Diaz.

"De Castro's reply to the Lopezes was simple: 'I can't use MGB to attack the administration because I'm part of the administration,'" the insider said.

Yesterday, a reliable source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the Lopezes had asked De Castro to break away from Ms Arroyo, but that the Vice President had yet to respond.

The source cited the cancellation of MGB as proof of the alleged continuing pressure exerted by the Lopezes on De Castro.

According to the source, the Lopezes have declared a "war" on Ms Arroyo, whom they supposedly viewed to be hostile to their business interests.

The family was supposedly particularly piqued by Ms Arroyo's decision to back the efforts of the government-owned National Power Corp. to collect billions of pesos in debts owed by the Lopez-owned Manila Electric Co. (Meralco).

Asked to comment, De Castro said: "Masakit ang ngipin ko (I have a toothache)"-employing former President Fidel Ramos' way of saying "No comment."

He said he was not sure whether the removal of the show from the air was politically motivated. He added that MGB, being a line-produced show, could be junked any time by the network.

De Castro also stressed that he had not been connected with MGB in any way since he left it last year and assumed office as Vice President.

But he admitted that talk about the Lopezes' request for him to withdraw support from the President and the axing of MGB had been going around ABS-CBN lately.

Pressed to say something on the issue, De Castro said: "I have no comment at this time."

De Castro has a public service program, "Para Sa Iyo, Bayan," which airs over ABS-CBN radio station dzMM every Saturday and for which he has refused to accept compensation.

Surprised

Per the insider's account, Arlene de Castro met last November with MGB anchors and some staff members at a restaurant in Rockwell, Makati City, to tell them the "sad news."

"They were surprised when they were told that it was over for MGB. Arlene told them that Bayan Productions would not renew the contract with ABS-CBN that expired in December," the insider said, adding:

"Ever since De Castro became Vice President, [the owners wanted to put] politics in the show."

At one point, the insider said, Omaga Diaz was made to host a segment on politics "against Arlene's will," but she complied.

"[But] the strategy didn't work," the insider said. "That segment had to be taken out because the ratings were taking a dive. Natatalo ng (the show was losing to the) competition. The ratings of police stories are still stronger."

'Time to retire MGB'

Yet another reliable source said ABS-CBN top management called Arlene de Castro early last month to inform her that MGB would have its last airing on Dec. 17.

But two more shows were eventually allowed to run until the swan song on New Year's Eve.

The source -- who, like the others, asked not to be named so as to protect himself -- said this was probably because the network had no show yet to replace MGB at that time.

The sudden cancellation of the show stunned everybody at the network, the source said.

The source also said the network management had told MGB producers that "it was time to retire" the program.

But the source wondered why MGB was given the boot when the people behind it were supposed to meet with top management in March to decide on the program's fate.

Also, the source said, the cancellation of the show was surprising because it was doing well in terms of ratings and commercials.

"Maybe they wanted to disassociate from Kabayan because of his continued support for President Arroyo," the source said.

Last week, "Kamao," a show on Filipino boxing hosted by Ted Failon, was shown on MGB's time slot.

No 'GMA factor'

"Kamao" is expected to run for the next three weeks as a prelude to the boxing rematch between the Philippines' Manny Pacquiao and Mexico's Eric Morales.

Lawyer Jesse Andres, De Castro's chief of staff and spokesperson, said there was no "GMA factor" in the decision of ABS-CBN to junk the show.

Andres told the Inquirer that the show's contract was only up to Dec. 31, 2005, and that it was possible that it was not renewed by the network.

"Block time lang yang MGB. ABS-CBN wanted to remove it after Noli left the show to serve as Vice President. Even with the ratings, medyo iba na rin ang dating (the show comes out different) without Noli," he said.

Andres said De Castro was no longer part of MGB and had no intention of returning to it because Cabinet members were not allowed to have direct interests in any business.

"The Vice President is not interested [in returning to MGB] at the moment. He still has to serve up to 2010," Andres said.

He also said offers had been made for the show to move to GMA 7, but that he did not know what had happened to the negotiation.

In the matter of the supposed rift between the Lopez family and De Castro regarding the latter's support for Ms Arroyo, Andres said: "I asked the Vice President about it and he said it's definitely not true."

Mum's the word

Staff members of MGB -- there were more than 40, eight of whom were writers -- were mum or in the dark about the matter.

Questions were posed: What happened?

"I have no authority to say," said one.

"Masalimuot (It's complicated)," said another.

Was it the ratings?

"Of course not! That's not true. We're in the thick of things. Lumalaban kami (We're fighting)," said one.

Said another: "Of course not. It has to do with ... No comment. We are not in the know about what happens sa itaas (in top echelons)."

Political?

"That's the speculation I'm hearing," said one. "But who are we to say? We cannot speculate on what happens on the highest floors of ABS-CBN." With a report from Bayani San Diego Jr.

Is it a big loss for ABS-CBN? It depends on where you stand. For people who think that Alejandro has contributed his marketing chops to the company, it may be considered as a big loss. But for those who thought that Alejandro was instrumental for ABS-CBN's decline in the ratings, then it is a welcome resignation.

I don't really have the right info regarding his reasons for "resigning". Ang tingin ko he was let go by Gabby Lopez as part of the fallout caused by the Wowowee tragedy.

Network in the news
By Doreen G. Yu
The Philippine Star 03/12/2006

The first time he appeared in front of the television cameras was a defining moment for Eugenio Lopez III known as Gabby, from his middle name Gabriel, or EL3 to colleagues and staff–as well as for the television network he heads, ABS-CBN.

In a brief seven-sentence statement, Lopez unequivocally took responsibility for the tragedy that has come to be known as the Wowowee stampede. Seventy-one people died and hundreds were injured among the thousands that lined up outside the Ultra stadium in Pasig that Sunday in February, hoping to be among the fortunate few to gain entry to and participate in the first anniversary extravaganza of the noontime game show Wowowee. The preliminary report of a government task force that investigated the stampede had put the blame squarely on the network, and accused it of "treating people like animals." Lopez also reacted unequivocally to that assessment, prompting the task force head to apologize to the network the next day.

Lopez’s televised statement put ABS-CBN on higher ground, salvaging a situation that could have dealt the network serious long-term damage, including a dip in share prices. Lopez later says that his decision to make the statement was "strictly instinctive," against the advise of his lawyers. In a lighter mood over dinner recently with The STAR editors, he jests that he was "trained by my wife... In any crisis it’s always kasalanan ko, so it was easy for me to say it’s my responsibility."

That decision, and his actions right after the stampede and in the days following, earned him respect and admiration all around, but most especially from the ABS-CBN staff. "Lumabas ang pagka-Geny niya," one said, referring to his late father, the legendary Geny Lopez who, with brothers Oscar and Manolo, rebuilt the Lopez empire and restored ABS-CBN to its former glory. One executive admits to some surprise that Gabby "could step up in this crisis," so now "people are rallying behind him... proud of him as their leader."

His "I am responsible" statement, delivered with conviction and sincerity, automatically drew comparison with the other famous televised "I am sorry" statement, but Lopez immediately steers away from such comparisons. He laments that the tragedy has been "turned into a political game" and he wants no part of it.

The network’s reaction to the tragedy was swift and decisive. Lopez was at the Ultra within the hour, followed by other ABS-CBN officials. The decision not to continue with the show that day was reached after serious discussion, amid fears that the remaining throng, who refused to leave, would get unruly if the show was cancelled.

Lopez says there are valuable lessons to be learned from the unfortunate episode, which will guide the network in the conduct of future big crowd events, including consulting risk management and other security experts here and abroad.

Network officials did not flinch either in the face of threats of class action suits, and spent the days after the tragedy visiting victims’ families, attending to funeral and hospital needs. This personal involvement with victims’ families gave them some surprising insights: many families expressed support for the show and host Willie Revillame, practically absolving them, some even asking if Willie would be coming to the funeral. They also wanted to know when the show would resume.

The big come back was held yesterday, still with host Willie Revillame and still under the same name, despite some suggestions that the show now be called by another name, like "Wowowin" for example.

The return of Wowowee, network executive Charo Santos explains, had to be carefully studied. There would have to be changes in the conduct of the show, especially in procedures for admitting studio audience and the manner of selection of participants in the games. New segments would also be added, such as the much touted "71 Dreams", in memory of the 71 stampede fatalities. Winners would also be counselled on how to set up businesses and manage their money, so as not to squander their winnings–a reaction, Santos admits, to charges that the show merely gave dole outs and encouraged mendicancy.

In the week prior to Wowowee’s return, the network aired feel-good "where are they now" episodes showing how past winners’ lives had changed, how dreams had in fact come true for those on whom the fates of Wowowee had smiled.

Gabby Lopez has been at the helm of ABS-CBN as chairman and CEO since 1997–"seems like forever," he sighs. Last week, he assumed the presidency as well, following the resignation of Cito Alejandro, who Lopez had brought in to the network as part of an infusion of "new blood", to return to NutriAsia, which recently acquired controlling interest in Del Monte.

Lopez is quick to dispel the notion that ABS-CBN has fallen to the number two spot nationwide.  The slide, he clarifies, is only in Metro Manila, particularly in the suburbs; nationwide, he insists, "we’re still number one.". The problem in Metro Manila is "partly a signal problem... the result of being a low-band channel" against rival GMA-7 being a mid-band channel.

He admits that content-wise, GMA has improved "dramatically" over the last two years. But ABS-CBN has scored a number of winners as well, including the Kris Aquino hosted "Game Ka Na Ba?" and the hugely popular reality show "Pinoy Big Brother", now on its second season featuring celebrities cloistered in a specially constructed house next to the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Charo Santos shares some programming plans, including acquiring other shows from the Dutch firm Endemol, which owns the Big Brother series, as well as co-production ventures with regional networks, like a 20-part series with a Malaysian network starring Piolo Pascual and Kristine Hermosa, who have a big following in Malaysia. "We also have to improve on our comedies," she says.

Wowowee was their latest attempt at competing with the 25-year runaway success "Eat Bulaga", aired on GMA-7. "We’ve tried everything to beat ‘Eat Bulaga’," admits Lopez. "We (finally) decided to try counter-programming, to put a game show against a variety show...and Wowowee is our strongest brand so far... In the last six months, we’ve done caravans in Davao, Iloilo...all over the country, and we’ve drawn hundreds of thousands."

"Even in America," adds Santos. "In fact, balikbayans make ‘Wowowee’ part of their tour."

"It’s obviously touched a nerve," says Lopez, "but even we are not sure what that nerve is. (The show) cuts across all classes, from A to E..."

With the an-nouncement of key appointments in network management last week, Lopez says the "infusion of new blood" that he has been undertaking–someone said it looks more like a "blood transfusion", which drew non-committal laughter from both Lopez and Santos–is complete.

The restructuring of ABS-CBN’s news team–notably "importing" Maria Ressa from CNN (Lopez reveals that he had been talking to Ressa for three years before she agreed to come on board in January 2005)–has shown some significant initial success, particularly drawing praise for its coverage of the Wowowee stampede. "Parang hindi sila ang involved," observed one media practitioner, noting that their coverage did not show any favor, treating it like it was a news story involving someone else.

And although Lopez jokes that his role is merely "taga-pirma lang ng tseke," a network insider notes that Lopez has begun to "take a more active interest in the news department."

In a speech recently before the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas, Lopez posed the question of whether media was "contributing toward resolving conflicts or, in Tagalog, nakakadagdag lang sa gulo (adding to the confusion)."

"Over the last 20 years, every time there’s been a major crisis we’ve been there," Lopez says, adding that "people still, for the most part, believe what they read and hear," with a majority of Filipinos still dependent on radio and television for information.

While admitting that "the business side of it still drives the whole process," Lopez believes that "at the end of the day, excellent organizations are driven by certain values, and these values help them decide what they will do in specific situations. And that’s what differentiates good organizations from organizations that are simply commercial, driven by the bottom line... Value driven organizations will occasionally make the right decision, driven by what is right."

Beside Big Brother and Fear Factor what other popular or successful TV shows are being produced by Endemol?

GMA loves GMA-7

Manila Bulletin Online
By CARLOS BANAAG

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo actually said that GMA-7’s "culture of responsible journalism" made it Number One—far ahead of the Number Two network. She also reportedly called newscaster Mike Enriquez a "model journalist". Among those thoughtful media observers who still support the President, these statements might be enough to make them change their minds.

First of all, ABS-CBN is no longer that far behind GMA-7. For several months, the overall channel ratings of ABS CBN have steadily increased, closing the gap between the top two networks considerably. Whereas a year ago GMA-7 dominated the TV schedule across the board, today ABS-CBN wins certain slots at various times of the day including some in primetime. Whether or not ABS-CBN can regain the number one ranking this year will depend on a number of factors which should be the subject of a separate article, but it is certainly within the realm of possibility.

The more troubling implications of President Arroyo’s claims, however, are that GMA-7 exhibited a kind of journalism that is far and away superior to that practiced by ABS-CBN; and that the journalism of ABS-CBN is somehow irresponsible. Not only are these insinuations an affront to ABS-CBN and, for that matter, to all other broadcast networks, they are genuinely disturbing in these times of explicit government threats to freedom of expression and of the press.

What exactly is this brand of GMA-7 journalism that President Arroyo has taken time out to extol? On the morning of Feb. 24, when ABS-CBN had begun marathon news coverage on the situation which was to prompt the issuance of Proclamation 1017, the hosts of "Unang Hirit"—a GMA-7 news and public affairs program continued horsing around on the air. During the continuous news coverage that GMA-7 eventually kicked in with, the anchor Pia Arcangel, who also hosts a kiddie art program, was shallow and unenlightening. She did not consistently follow up her own questions or seek to clarify the often confusing statements from the opposing camps. To be generous, her failings were probably attributable to lack of experience and not to any personal bias or any deliberate machinations by GMA-7 news managers. Arnold Clavio and Jiggy Manicad who overed the crisis at the Marine headquarters, on the other hand, should not be given the complete benefit of such generosity. They seemed to be trying to dismiss or make light of the grave events transpiring at Fort Bonifacio. As veteran broadcast journalists, they knew better.

This is not to say that ABS-CBN did much better. Pia Hontiveros in the dark. Ricky Carandang and Ina Reformina’s breathless repor-tage. But helicopter shots, Mendiola coverage, interviews with Marines in Mindanao and with Admiral Mayuga.

Mike is good at what he does. Read the news in a manner that increases ratings. But to call him a model journalist is an insult to all hard-working reporters who risk life and limb to ferret out the truth and craft compelling reports. In fact, Mike with his unique delivery and pro-La Salle riffs is the very face of sensationalism and the voice of bias.

By praising GMA-7, GMA was re-paying political debt. But by involving herself in the network wars, GMA further demeans an already diminished presidency.

Considering her popularity ratings, GMA may have given GMA-7 the kiss of death.

                   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GMA-7 also stopped the airing of Brother Eddie's program "Ang Diyos at Bayan" which was slated to discuss the People Power Anniversary without any warning or reason at all.  GMA also censored The Probe Team before when it tried to expose some government official thru lifestyle check.  This is why Bernadeth Sembrano, Cheche Lazaro and The Probe Team left GMA.  There are other instances that they tried to coverup News to protect their interest or someone.

I can't believe how Mike and Mel can still recite their slogan "Walang Kinikilingan, Walang Pinoprotektahan" with a straight face.

I heard from recent news the DOJ and NBI will file criminal case against the entire ABS-CBN management as a result of the ultra tragedy.  Lopez won't be ncluded.    If found guilty, they'd lose their franchise so we can say goodbye to the station.  How true is this?

i think it is the NTC that has the power over the revoking of the licence of media firms, not the DOJ.

...from the article:

"ABS-CBN's fortunes contrasted sharply with those of its rival GMA Network Inc., which recently reported a 2005 net income of P2 billion on the back of P9.4 billion in revenues.

ABS-CBN was quick to acknowledge that its earnings were dented by the poor performance of its television programs.

"Airtime revenues remained weak, reflecting the lower ratings of its programs [in 2005] compared to [2004], while operating costs, though controlled, maintained its growth," ABS-CBN said in a statement.

More importantly, the company will likely muddle through this year once more since boosting revenues by raising advertising rates is no longer possible after it lost its lead to GMA Network."

I think the TV networks' finances are a better indicator of their performance, rather than their program ratings, although they directly affect each other...

Bandila, the new news program of ABS CBN replacing Insider was slated to start on an earlier slot (10:30 PM). After several days of waiting, GMA now decided to move their Saksi to a much earlier slot!

Abangan ang susunod na aksyon!  ;D

GMA is sooooo quiet on the Digital TV transition initiatives of NTC. As per newspaper reports only ABS CBN and ABC5 is keen on doing DTV moves although NTC sources have confirmed that GMA have applied for lots of UHF channels in the regional areas. Hindi naman dahil hindi sila nagfe-feed in balita sa mga reporters eh halos araw araw may write-up yung mga programa at talents ng GMA to sustain the (choose 1) perceived/imagined popularity of their programs/talents.

While waiting for the screening of Mano Po 5 in Gateway Cineplex, they featured the upcoming shows of GMA7. As usual, the undying fantaseryes again like:

LUPIN III (Richad Gutierez)
SUPER TWINS (Nadine Samonte and Jennilyn Mercado)
ASIAN TREASURES (Angel Locsin and ROBIN PADILLA??)

Duh?! Di ba sila nanawa sa ganyang type ng shows?

I had dinner recently with friends who both work for GMA and Dos and the subject of migration to digital and HD came up. According to both friends ABS-CBN is already making the preparations for the migration already. Their biggest reason apparently is that since 2 is the lowest UHF channel they have no choice but to go digital in order to boost the quality of the transmission to provinces. GMA on the other hand, has quietly earmarked P1 billion for their own migration efforts.

The most exciting news they gave though is that they are projecting complete migration by 2010 -- the same year the US will have completely migrated to digital too.

It looks like both companies will incur heavy losses though. I told them that it is a huge gamble because they are basically expecting consumers to migrate to newer technologies with them. And for a third world country this is a very iffy proposition. My ABS friend said that they are looking at actually giving away digital converters for SD CRT TVs in the first year or so.

The Network Wars will start heating up with ABS CBn's decision to bring AGB Nielsen to court because of ratings survey anomalies in Bacolod purportedly being committed by the rival station.

GMA on the other hand is resurrecting the Willionaryo issue to deflect the survey cheating issues raised by ABS CBN.

I for one is very interested how GMA would answer the allegations made by the informant regarding the promotions (viewer buying?) being conducted by GMA in the area.

This puts doubts now on the full page ratings ads GMA churns out periodically trumpeting their dominance in ratings.

GMA on the other hand, have been complaining for the longest time that their ratings on cable tv homes are not reflective of their true ratings since Skycable is controlled by ABS/Lopez hence GMA's signals are being  'sabotaged'. Look for their crawlers indicating phone numbers to call if they encounter poor GMA signals in their cable systems. GMA cannot seem to admit that in cable tv, the signals of GMA and ABS are of equal quality, much better than the terrestial transmission. The signals being the same, the ratings are now dictated by program quality that results now to a much closer gap between the cable ratings of the two networks.

For viewers depending on antenna for reception of TV signals, ABS CBN has a big disadvantage if the antenna used is substandard. So you can expect that people would rather watch a much clearer GMA signal than a snowy ABS signals hence a significant rating dispartiy between the two would occur. I think GMA knows this but they still want a bigger ratings gap even on cable hence they keep on complaining on their calbe ratings.
