I have a basic Technics SL-BD20D with stock p-type cart.

I am contemplating of changing the cart.  Can anyone recommend a certain brand/model?

thanks!

Here are some options:

1.  Audio Technica -  AT3842P
                                 AT316EP
                                AT92E

2.  Ortofon - OMP-3E
                    OMP-5E
                    OMP-10

3.  Shure - M92E (Universal Mount)

shoe_maker/turn table gurus,

Me nakita kasi akong turn table dito na vintage, iyong me horn sa ibabaw.

pede ba iyon ikabit sa mga amp, parang stand alone iyon diba speaker bale ang horn na iyon.  Tapos parang me handle doon na iniikot.  Nakita ko lang pero di ko na-inspect maigi around 120USD ata ang turing sakin a month ago.

Wow! :D

Kung orig yan, $120 is very cheap.  Matagal na akong naghahanap niyan dito sa Pinas from my lolos, lolas, titas, titos, and any old person I know. :)  Very collectible na yan.

Dito sa Pinas, the small versions can cost around P25T. >:(   The big versions can even go as high as P50T. >:(

Check mo lang baka "replica" na lang yan.  Ang mura kasi eh.

Its not worth running that into an amplifier. Di talaga maganda tumunog yan.  Habol lang talaga dyan is its collectibility.

Kumbaga sa kotse, its useless to put a Ferrari engine in a Ford Model T. ;)

Hi Qman, nakapag-padala na kami ng ganyan sa manila... one with the brass horn and others that are semi portable (you open the cabinet to listen to the music)--early 1900 era.

There are no electronic outputs it is pure analog/mechanical kasi the sound is generated by a moving diaphragm and amplified by the horn.  It came with 78 rpm records and I tell you... it gives you the creeps when you listen to it.  It is like going back in time.

That is the going rate here in the US if it is in good working order.  Victorola units are the better one... dapat lang my kasamang needles --if not pakong bakya will work  ;)

Sana you can test it... crank the handle a few times and wait for the record to spin and set the needle..

minicooper,

the important thing is that the wind-up mechanism  and diaphragm is working. Baka lang kasi mahirap i-repair sa atin. I guess you can notice a replica from the cabinet casing.  The wood should look old and not new.  Usually there is a brass badge attached to the side that shows the brand.

try to haggle... malay mo ibigay ng mas-mura. good luck!

You can try going to an "Audiophile" branch.  They still sell Shure cartridges.  :)

MiniCooper,

Sorry, I thought you're here in Manila.  It expensive nga diyan,  the M92E here only costs around $12 (kaya lang out-of-stock na) and the M104E costs around $19 (was able to get one na and the good news is I can use the N92E stylus for my M104E cartridge).  Thanks anyway.

God Bless.

I think what's available in Audiophile Components either MCS or EDSA is the M44G P1,800, M35S- ~P1,500 and the White Label w headshell for ~P3,500. The V15VxMR was about ~P11k. No stock of M44-7. Try Stanton  8)

what do you guys think of the Numark TTX1?  seems to be designed for DJ's but i wonder how it would do in home audio?  saw it at 5th ave yesterday kinda expensive at 35k but US street price is below 20k (definitely cheaper than Technics SL1200)... interchangeable tonearms (both straight & S-type included), digital counter and uhh SPDIF digital outs?!?

Review here: Numark TTX1

also acquired an old beat up SL1200mk2 yesterday that's why i got interested in the TTX1 w/c looks cool & has modern features... but have enough dough only for this 2nd hand unit... the dust cover is missing and the needle is missing in the M55 cart, but other than the dirt and a few minor scratches, its still rock solid... how do you restore the aluminum casing, would metal polish do it?
