I saw your Oracle Delphi with SME at Pinoydiophiles.  That's indeed a nice front-end my friend.  :)

Yup, I have heard of a lot of budget turntables, even direct drive ones, which were properly calibrated, being very musical.   :)

bro, do you know anyone who could calibrate a sansui direct drive TT?

thanks

hi dondon,

You could try checking out Hyperaudio for your turntable's calibration/tuning.

There are various tools needed to properly tune a turntable/arm/cartridge.

The basic of the basic would be the following:
1.  Bubble Level
-  to properly level the turntable / platter

2.  Cartridge Alignment Tool / Protractor
-  to properly align the cartridge vis-a-vis the record grooves

3.  Tracking Force Gauge
-  to properly set the counterweight of the tonearm

You can watch a person do this for you.  Eventually, you can learn this and do it by yourself.  Its fun! (to some)

So, any new converts from digital to analog?

Its the perfect time to be converted my freinds!  ;D

My friend's LP stash from the U.S. has arrived.  Very good condition LPs.  Various types of music available.

So c'mon, let the analog bug bite you!  You'll love it!  ;D

Analog is not dead!  (that's why this thread is on top again  ;D)

Arnoldc, enjoying your new "The Wall" album?  :)

arnoldc,

He! He! He!  Naka reserve na ang INXS LPs for me  :)  Malay mo, in a few years, collectible na rin yun as the lead signer is already dead.

You saw, Analog Man's VPI TNT Mk5 Table / Air Tangent Arm / Clearaudio Harmony MC cartridge set-up?

Grabe talaga yung Air Tangent.  Did he show you the air pump?  Its the big box outside his listening room.  Nakakatakot.  I thought it was some sort of generator.  ;D

Both of you nga pala practically have the same style of rack.  Acrylic with threaded stainless steel bars.

Wala nanaman akong pera!  :(

Anyway, LPs are more important than food, don't you think?  ;D

Hi tuff_u_gong,

I don't think there's a distributor of Rega turntables in the Philippines but there are a no. of Planar 2's and 3's that float around.......(like at hyper's place)

As for second hand budget tables, you won't go wrong with the Regas; Thorens is another good bet (160, 166, 124, etc.).  You might find some Projects.

Maybe you can tell us your budget and maybe we can come up with a very decent deck.

Good luck.

I'm not sure, but I think Hyperaudio still has a Rega Planar 3.

thanks corrsty!

actually i'm raising some funds for a pre-amp, a turntable/cartridge and, kung kaya pa, a speaker upgrade. i'm not sure yet how i'll allocate.

sa turntable, basta lumamang lang ang tunog sa cd/dvd player ko OK na.

san ba may thorens? yan ba yung brand na binebenta ni sir sonny tuazon?

thanks!

tuff,

Sonny Tuazon sells project turntables.

Xinesyss, another member, was selling his Project 1.2 TT last time for 9K. I think it comes with a cartridge or two. It is a month or two old. You can send him a PM.

I agree, analog is better than digital--at least to my ears. Just make sure your pre-amp has a phono stage, otherwise, you'd have to get a separate one.

tuff,

you're welcome.

I think the Project 1.2 is a good starter table.  This turntable, when properly set up or any other turntable, could easily beat your cd/dvd player.

Some advice:

I heard some vinyl newbie (not that i'm saying you're new) who ventured to LP that didn't like the sound, or absolutely hated it because of LP intricacies, eg. occassional pops and ticks (so called popcorn sound).   Probably they were not advised that vinyls, although is the best high resolution format at the  moment, needs more TLC.  If you don't mind scrubbing your LPs, you should invest in a Record Cleaning Machine dahil nakakatamad maglinis ng plaka.  Also, not all ticks and pops can be remedied by cleaning.

Just a word of advice.

Pero if you're a music lover and you want to capture the warmth and correctness of the music, LPs the way.

Good luck.

Digital is was of the evils in society  ;D

Why?

It has made people lazy  ;D

Why?

With Digital, one does not need to do the necessary responsibilities to obtain good music reproduction.  That is; cleaning your LPs, aligning and cleaning your cartridge, etc. etc.

corrsty is absolutely right.  In order to achieve good sound from your analog playback system, you must at least be dedicated in doing the necessary "chores".

Well, its no crime if your lazy and will just settle for Digital  ;D

As they say:  "No pain, no gain"  ;D

hi corrsty!

i'm fairly familiar with that popcorn sound kasi lumaki din ako with LPs. i also liked cleaning my records and cartridge - am not sure if i did things right back then, though...i agree with the TLC thing. hindi nga ako nagpapahiram ng plaka kahit sa closest friends ko. ha! ha!

anyway, i'm quite excited to play my old LP records (not that many) again specially with the ST-70 that now resides in my room!

btw, i saw a couple of old technics turntables around my parents' house that i may still be able to restore, rewire. if any of them work i'll be needing a good cartridge/needle and a pre-amp (i'm currently using a passive line stage built by GURU hyper) with a good phono stage (or even an MF X-LP which has a moving coil option).

thanks!

Hi tuff_u_gong,

Don't worry about the fact that you don't even let your close friends borrow your LPs.  In the audiophile community, there is an unwritten law that nobody borrows each others LPs.  You can swap or trade LPs your with audiophile friends but not borrow.  Its not being selfish and its perfectly ethical.  No normal audiophile would even think of borrowing LPs from a fellow audiophile.  Well, that is with the audiophile community.

As to good sites in the web, I just type in "Cartridge Alignment" in a search engine such as Yahoo,  and a lot of good informative sites come out.

Hello dondon,

I don't personally know Gerry Kaimo, but heard he is also an audiophile.  Yup, I also bumped unto his name when I was surfing Enjoy the Music, specifically that protractor.

I have not tried contacting him though for that protractor.

I finally saw an original "Victor Talking Machine".  This is the antique phonograph I really wanted to have for display purposes.

According to the seller, it still rotates and works.  The only thing missing is the stylus.

The price? P35T.  My oh my.  Oh never mind,  I'll just settle with my RCA/Victor tin poster.  The one with the Victor Phonograph and Nipper (the white dog).

just got an old tube powered? (there are tubes inside, i'm not sure, maybe its a phono preamp or something) westinhouse turntable, a suitcase type. from the looks of it, it just needs minor restoration, particularly the metal plate. will tell you more about it later.
