Yep.

Thanks!

I am a huge fan of pinoy classic films and just recently watched Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.

Oh? That doesn't make your list, then?

Yeah, I don't know but I just find the film ok. I prefer Himala than Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.

Fair enough. Himala's Bernal's most surreal, and strangely prophetic--it foreshadows the devastation of Pinatubo. Attitude too--I talked to people there and some of them believe there was divine judgment behind the disaster.

You can never wrong with these timeless Filipino classic:

Himala
Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos
Kakabakaba ka ba?
Aguila
Kapit sa Patalim
Gabi Na, Kumander
Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang

I tried tallying the votes from this poll (though I admit it's not fool-proof), and the results were quite instructive. It should be noted that I considered only those votes submitted in response to this particular poll, hence those lifted from Joel David's book and QTV's Ang Pinaka- (just to cite some examples) were not counted. The respondents ranged from industry professionals to film critics to pinoydvd.com members.
The top ten (in ascending order): Scorpio Nights, Itim, Biyaya Ng Lupa, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Insiang/Himala (tied), Oro,Plata,Mata, Kisapmata, City After Dark, Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag.
So that's 3 by Lino Brocka, 2 each by Ishmael Bernal, Mike De Leon, and Peque Gallaga, and 1 from Manuel Silos. Brocka also has the most number of films cited (including Gumising Ka Maruja and Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak); Biyaya was the only title cited from Manuel Silos' works, and the only movie in the top ten that was not produced during the Second Golden Age. All of Mike De Leon's full-length features, from Itim to Bayaning Third World, were mentioned. Carlos Vander Tolosa's Giliw Ko (1939) is the oldest title submitted, and Mark Meilly's La Visa Loca (2005) is the newest. Brillante Mendoza, whose independently-produced films only gained notice quite recently, did not figure in the polls.
Among the respondents, 'keating' got 7 from the top ten on his list, while a few came up with 'unique' lists, including 'diabolik' (page 2), totoy bato (page 4), and Jo Atienza (page 10).

Nothing by Gerry de Leon? That's weird, man.

I mean--Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, Sisa, Moises Padilla Story, Daigdig ng Mga Api, 48 Oras, Sawa sa Lumang Simboryo, Sanda Wong, Terror is a Man should be mentioned at least once.

Celso's Burleks Queen and Pagputi ng Uwak, Pagitim ng Tagak should be mentioned at least once.

And I think I for one mentioned Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos at least once. Didn't I?

Basically why I don't trust scores.

"Interesting", not "weird", should be the best word to describe the absence of those films, Mr.Vera. Copies of films which made it to the top ten are commercially available, except Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag and the Mike De Leon films, and this I think is one of the reasons why those films you mentioned didn't get higher scores: it's possible that very few of the respondents have seen them (among Gerardo De Leon's major works, I've only seen Sisa and Noli Me Tangere); Daigdig Ng Mga Api is even considered lost forever.
Around forty films were cited at least thrice in this poll, most of it are really good.
And by the way, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos came in at 11th, tied with Salome.  ;)

That's 'Burlesk Queen,' I meant to write there.

I'd make a list of those mentioned at least twice. Maybe a special list of those mentioned only once. Just to highlight the unjustly neglected.

Incidentally--Lihim ni Madonna, Tag init sa Tag Ulan, Alamat ni Julian Makabayan, Babae sa Bubungang Lata, Sisa (O'Hara version), Hindi Nahahati ang Langit, Dolzura Cortez Story, Bagong Bayani, Segurista, Ang Magpakailanman, Ang Maikling Kuwento ng Apoy, Todo Todo Teros, Indio Nacional. Just saying.

R2 thanks for tallying the lists. I think 10 lists are not enough really to cover the best Filipino films ever made. And yes, most Gerry de Leon's masterpieces are lost already.

Kudos to keating for starting this thread five years ago! I suggest that there ought to be a separate list/tally of filmmakers' choice for the 10 best pinoy flicks ever made.

Anyway, here are my (belated) choices:

Anak Dalita
Biyaya ng Lupa
Burlesk Queen
Himala
Igorota (Luis Nepomuceno)
Jack and Jill (Mar S. Torres) - funniest pinoy film IMFO  ;)
Kisapmata
Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag
Moral
Oro, Plata, Mata

There should be mention of "Jaguar" directed by Lino Brocka and starring Philip Salvador as another classic film?....

Impressive choices.

I think Mendoza does deserve a slot; three is a bit  much. I'd throw in John Torres, Raya Martin, Dennis Marasigan, Rico Ilarde, and that's just off the top of my head.

This reminds me: what were the Manunuri's choices for Top Ten Best Filipino Films of the 1990s?

Lino Brocka streaming on Netflix

Streaming on Netflix (with subtitles): three of the best Filipino films I know. Two will stop streaming come Jan. 15. One--Insiang--is in my opinion Brocka's masterpiece.

My thoughts on Insiang (warning: plot and ending discussed in close detail)
