t-amp
has anyone tried the $35 amplifier that rivals the high end amps. I was just reading about it on forbes asia magazine(3 oct 2005 issue)

Anyone tried it? How is it?

Class D/Sonic Impact Tweaks
Let's start a thread on modifying and tweaking the t-amp and other class d amps.
I've made all the tweaks possible with the t-amp and have been using it as my main amp for the past 4 months already. For starters and for the biggest audible upgrade, change input caps to polypropelene or blackgates. Problem with higher uf caps for input, you get a startup "thump". But you gain deeper bass and less harsher highs which. You may also want to recase the amp and use better wiring and terminals. Also try upgrading the PSU cap, I've attached 3 big caps, one 6800uf as the first cap connected to dc power input, then two 150uf ata, soldered directly sa pins ng Tripath chip. I also changed one of the resistors to change the input gain of the amp to around 12v. I also attached a heat sink to the tripatch chip, the newer models don't have a lump of solder underneath it for heat dissipation, so naisip ko mas makakatulong pag kabitan ng heatsink. For a more detailed list of mods available, please check www.michael.mardis.com

Forgot to mention that class-d or so called digital amps like smps (switching mode power supply) more than linear PSUs, so those contemplating on buying 12v 3ampere regulators may also consider using laptop PSUs. :) Also, for those who are into DIYing might be interested in trying out the amps at www.41hz.com and try their amp6 or amp3. The tripath chip used in these models are a definite improvement over the sonic impact t-amp. Yeo at DIYpararadise is also selling a kit based on the ta2020 chip (similar to amp6).

congrats sa mga mods mo bro.

unfortunately I disagree with the smps being favored by class d amps. I did tried powering the amp3 that I built using smps but to my dismay the highs were all over the place.  >:( I also tried the t-amp with smps but have gotten a sort of high frequency oscillation which I thought can be remedied by proper shielding. However, the real best psu was the good old battery. A fast regulator comes in second.

how's your amp3? tumutunog na ba?

Just me and my 2 cents.

Amp6 binili ko nung nasa States ako. Onboard voltage regulator. :) Pag tumunog may laban dun sa Charlize ni Yeow, well according to Nuuk, been exchanging notes with him during our assembly of the amp6. Regarding SMPS, there are different views on the matter, others swear by it, others experienced the same thing you said, harsh highs and weak bass ang general comment, pero depende daw sa SMPS na gamit.

Yep, it totally depends on the smps you use. But still, everyone who listened didn't liked it so I have no choice.

Wow amp6, maybe my next project is an amp2... maybe.

Pwede ko lang syang gawin if I will DIY a separate regulated PSU section for the tripath amp, however, people said that the amp6 board was already well designed, where the PSU section is almost next to the tripath chip with very minimal distance between them. So I used the onboard regulation nalang. Napagisipan ko lagyan ng zener diode as bypass on the very last filter cap before the tripath chip since this is easier to implement. Di ko narin natuloy because maingay daw ang zeners. What you think Master Jojo?

great item this amp.

got one and i tried powering a pair of high sensitivity definitive technology bookshelves.
that turned out ok. but lacking in bass. obviously on account of the speakers. so i tried it
next with dynaudio bookshelves. holy crap! the bass simply oozed. i no longer believe you
need high sensitivity speakers for them. of course it wil help since i noticed you can turn
the volume a tad lower if you use high sensitivity speakers.

i took the advice of big bro oweidah though and got the 6ampere zebra power supply and
hooked it onto a car-cigarette-lighter-type of cable.

dang these babies sound really sweet. perhaps it is just the appple of my eye right now,
oer perhaps it simply sounds very nice, but i am playing my t-amp more often than my
jolida tube amp right now.

quite impressive. to think per oweidah, it isnt burnt in yet.

hey guys,

i bought myself a 6amp power supply, and chose it over a 3am power supply. i though it
was just a few hundreds more so why not take it. so now i am wondering if those extra
3 amperes are making a difference in the sound of my t-amp.

thanks

Nope. At 4ohms, RMS power of the amp is 15w (assuming you're comfortable pushing the amp at 10% distortion), that's 30w for both channels, then given the efficiency of the amp, around 80%, that should be be around 36watts maximum, for 12volts input, around  3 amperes should be sufficient. For 8ohm operation, it can be lower. How much did you buy the PSU? SMPS? Regulated? To have a better improvement, do all the mods possible on the amp. The stock amp starts to attenuate bass at 100hz.

why not? the t-amp is a digital amp, compared to the gainclone which is a linear amp, linear amps are susceptible to noise from psu, not so with digital.
That's OK, you can like or dislike anything you choose. That's the wonderful thing about the freedom

Been using 2 sonic Ts to biamp my diamond 9.1  .......  huge sound improvement compared to using 1.... maybe because the speakers are now being driven properly (only 86db sensitivity)... Im sure tweaking the 2 T amps
will improve the sound further but dont want to take the chance as I have zero soldering skills.

sir oweidah,   I'm using a CA Azur 540A as preamp... I put  Y connector on the L/R pre-out.... one amp is driving
the tweeters and the other amp driving the mid/woofers.....  Actually the signal coming out the pre-out is split 3 ways as I also have connected a subwoofer....

sirs,  pwede kaya isang regulated power supply (12vdc)/3 to 6amperes - powering two(2) t-amps; one via cigarette lighter socket and the other via the red/black(+/-) terminals?
