I will try Prince of Egypt.  This disc has been in my collection for months and have not watched it yet. :-[ Bently, with your options, your collection must total more than 500 discs.

Definitely it would be:
Jesus of Nazareth

Other than that, a total abstinence
and have little peace and silence
around the house.

I looked over my collection and I realized I have only 2 with any religious content. Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. Passion of Joan of Arc only vaguely, I guess.

So it's Ben Hur for today since I only got it yesterday. It's quite hilarious to see the screen tests. Imagine Leslie Nielsen in the role of Ben Hur. I mean, he played it straight but I can't look at him now without suppressing a laugh.  ;D

It's Holy Thursday and I'm watching the X-Files Season 1. :D

I don't know what else I'm going to watch for the next few days, but I'm pretty sure The Sound Of Music will be one of them.

Others in store for me this Holy Week:

- Fight Club disc 2
- X-Men
- Jodie Foster's commentary in Contact

Sadly, I don't seem to have any "religious" movies on dvd.  I haven't really decided yet on what to watch but tonight I guess I'll have to pop in a disc since nothing good will be on tv. Maybe I'll watch George Benson - Absolutely Live. I'm tempted too to start with the Sopranos box but I thinking of selling it since it's unopened and I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it.  I haven't seen a single episode so I don't know. ???

benny, if you enjoy mob movies (The Godfather series, Goodfellas, Casino) then you will enjoy The Sopranos. It is one cool series, and James Gandolfini is a terrific presence. The show is by turns laugh-out-loud funny, suspenseful, shockingly violent, and terrifying -- but it is always innovative and unpredictable, keeping you on your toes and off-balance. It all fits tightly together in a well-written, well-acted package. The Sopranos is one set I do not regret buying, and I am definitely picking up season 2 when it's released.

My Holy Week movies are Endless Waltz: The Gundam Wing movie and JFK Oliver Stone Collection. Am getting together with a couple of friends tonight to view these. It's always better with friends. ;)

Okay, for those of you who like Bently has about 500+ discs in their collection, how do you afford it? logistics is my main enemy with this hobby of ours. Right now I have only about 50 discs, all region 1s. What I do is I record to vhs. I know this is a demotion, but what can I do? I record or collect practically 99% of what I watch on dvd. And I average about 3 to 4 NEW films each week. BTW, I just got Space Cowboys,The Million Dollar Hotel (killer soundtrack by Bono and U2),Tigerland, Billy Elliot and The Yards this week (all region 1s). If I record to vhs, my cost will only be about 132.00 pesos (72 pesos for Sony DX-e180 vhs and 60-70 pesos dvd rental), well plus the about 2 and a half hours (including the special features)electricity bill I spend watching the movie. So guys, how do you do it?

gonz  --- thanks for the capsule review of the Sopranos.  I guess I'll enjoy the box since I love the following movies: Casino, Goodfellas, Untouchables etc.. :) (or anything remotely "Scorsese", even enjoyed Bringing Out the Dead - and hey, I even have a copy of that.)

my advise is just really stick to movies that you really like, at one time i had more than 10 criterion collection titles in my collection, but it was just gathering dust on the shelves, so i sold most of them on ebay...(cha-ching! made a lot more than i paid for it) and just kept the titles that i know, i will watch again, and again.

Hello everyone! We're still in Cebu having the hardest time connecting to PinoyDVD. We can see the site, but for some odd reason, we can't post! >:( Cafes here are also painfully slooow, so we're trying to borrow a friend's dial-up to connect through Mozcom. I'm using someone's office connection and it's a relief to be able to read AND write.

Luckily, we brought along a couple of DVDs to watch over the long break:

Topsy Turvy. The life and times of Gilbert and Sullivan by Mike Leigh. I'm not a big fan of musicals myself, but this actually looks interesting. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

Last Temptation of Christ I've been saving this one for Good Friday. Can't see what the uproar was about in the late eighties since the book that it's based on says that it's a personal reflection on the life of Jesus.

I wonder if there's a DVD community here in Cebu? Maybe I'll ask around tomorrow...

Firewired I saw The Last Temptation Of Christ back in College, and I must say that it's one of the best films I've ever seen. It's one of the films that proved to me Scorcese's dynamism as a director.

Don't believe the hype, it's no more sacreligious than Dogma or even The Cider House Rules. Very apt for the Holy Week.

Or better yet, can you "advertise" the place in the DVD Rentals forum?

Ever since I was a kid, Holy Week meant mini-series. I think the tradition started with The Thornbirds.

I guess next year it'll be Horatio Hornblower/Horatio Hornblower: The Adventure Continues.

Plus Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and In The Beginning, to keep the right perspective on the season.

As Holy Week's a little more than a month away, I'm bumping bently's thread up for the benefit of all.

Here's my selection:

  • Jesus (2000) I liked the temptation scene in this version!
  • Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
  • Ben-Hur (1959)

That's my selection of movies fit for the Holy Week, we'll probably watch them from Holy Thursday to Black Saturday. I'm interested too in obtaining a copy of "The Ten Commandments", will probably get around to it one of these days. Paging PARC! ;)

thanks escape for bringing back this thread to life :)

i haven't gotten any new dvd's for my holy week viewing,
but i'm interested in getting this 2 dvd's that i haven't seen yet.

Jesus (2000)

Tackling the story of Jesus for film is bound to incur controversy. Yet, in a bold move, CBS produced the television miniseries Jesus, which not only retells the biblical story, but takes a look at the more human side of the man. Jeremy Sisto stars, and although it takes a little while for him to gather enough momentum to have us believing him in this role, overall he is surprisingly convincing. While the movie does stray from strict scripture--Jesus is shown feeling conflicted over his feelings for Lazarus's sister Mary; Satan, portrayed by Jeroen Krabbé, works hard at convincing Jesus to stray from his path--most of the plot will be familiar to viewers. Beginning with an adult Jesus, who works with his father as a carpenter, the program traces his life and death through resurrection. The strong supporting cast, including Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate, and Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene, lends to the credibility of the miniseries. This is a satisfying retelling of the life of Jesus and will please those who want new ways to explore biblical stories, as Jesus not only reinforces the ideals of the New Testament but shows Jesus as a complex individual. --Jenny Brown

The Miracle Maker - The Story of Jesus (2000)

This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

You're Welcome, bently! ;D

I happen to own and have seen Jesus (2000)
. This is one DVD that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for something in this genre.

Although the script is not as accurate as that of "Jesus of Nazareth" (this is literally the Gospel coming to life) and has taken several "artistic liberties" when it comes to the story of Jesus and Mary (Lazarus' sister), it still is a great rendition of a story updated for our times.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the temptation of Christ by Satan (played by Jeroen Krabbe) is particularly well portrayed and layed out with good special effects, a must see portion.
