NAD 533 TT vs Goldring vs Rega
« on: Dec 01, 2005 at 08:06 AM »
Am a newbie and am contemplating on trying Analog.  I've notice that among the TT out there, Nad offers the best value.  How is it compared to the entry models of GR and Rega TT?  Thanks!

hi! when you say "best value", what do you mean? what factors? for me IMHO, GR is of the best value, thanks! :D

Hi Superman,

Thanks!  Sorry, i meant cheapest.  I know the GR is more expensive but would it be worth the jump in price to save for this rather than the NAD or would it be more cheap in the long run to buy a NAD as start up and upgrade the stylus later on to match the GR.

Sorry, not sure if the above makes sense but appreciating your advise.

Salamat!!

NAD 533, GoldRing GR-1 and Rega Planar 2, they're all the same animal trying to look different. fit them with identical cartridge and they will sound similarly...  ::)

GR-1 is readily available here that's why the perceived popularity. in short, mass produced kase yan kaya marami nyan dito sa pinas. would you like to own one where you'd be just like any other Tom, Dick and Harry? mag-Pro-Ject ka na lang...  :o

Audioslave is right. Goldring GR1 and NAD533 sport the same plinth, platter, platter bearing specifications, tonearm and cartridge. Both tables use a rebagged rega rb250 tonearm. For plinth construction, no difference at all since both use same specifications and materials.  Basically it's a rega P2 in grey color.  :)  ;D  But if you're looking at best value, get the Goldring (mas mura) as you'll also be getting the same sound as NAD and Rega P2. For looks and "bragging rights" get the rega P2. Soundwise, iisa lang tunog nun tatlo.  But i doubt if you'll be able to get a bnew Rega P2, rega already ceased production of it's P2 model but still continues to manufacture rb250 tone arms as oem parts for other turntable manufacturers.

But, if you're just into trying out analog, i would suggest that you get a decent "bang for the buck" 2nd hand table first. Say a Technics SL1200 which would fetch for around 8K to 10K. Either way you won't end-up at the losing end. Pag di mo type ang analog, you can easily sell the 1200 at a respectable price. Or it may go the other way around, still sell the 1200 and upgrade to bnew turntable, say a Rega P3, Project Perspective  ;D , VPI, Clearaudio, Nottingham, J.A. Mitchell............... :) ;D ;D ;D

GR 1 is around 13 to 14k, GR 1.2 around 16 to 19k and GR 2 20 to 30k (not so sure). NAD 533, last time i scouted around is 19k.  Difference between the 3 Goldring models is platter bearing diameter and plinth.  Amongst the 3, the GR2 is the only one who uses a goldring 1012Gx Cartridge as its stock cart.  The previous 2 model use the goldring elektra model.  Another difference is that the previous models use a different mounting assembly than the gr2.  Hope this helps.  P3 ka nalang or J.A. Mitchell technodec kaagad para ala na masyado upgrade.  ;D ;D

If you're looking for turntable, you might want to consider the Technics (SLQ3) i'm selling in the marketplace! ;D

Chief, if i were you, i'd get a 2nd hand turntable muna before seriously digging into analog.  "Don't jump the gun" as they say. Start out small so you wouldn't be spending too much when testing the waters.  If you like the format then that's the time you should do serious planning.  ;)

up  :)

which among these tables respond well to tweaking/upgrading (new arm, heavier plinth, platter, etc.).

please include pro-ject TT in the discussion.

models from entry to mid level only.

thanks,

Any REGA based turntable using an RB250 arm is upgradeable. There are many tweaks for this. Just google RB250.
