I am NOT sure kung nadedecode ba talaga ng mga generic DVD players ang HDCD, though some DVD players will shown HDCD logo in the OSD if the disc inserted is HDCD-encoded.

Pinakamura na branded and very good player is NAD 542 - Php 19,000.00.

Is there a way to check if a player is really decoding HDCD data from an HDCD disc? Or the only way is to compare the generic CD player's output to that of a player with HDCD? as in playback quality? Using an ordinary CD player with digital outs, can HDCD data be decoded using an external DAC with HDCD capability? Tanong lang po. ;D

- There is two way first the physical test (Check the DAC model check via net if its already HDCD decoder) next is electrical test (never mind with this)

the only way is to compare the generic CD player's output to that of a player with HDCD? as in playback quality?
- I depends, some players with good upsampling capability sometimes better than HDCD playback lets say 24/96 or 24/192

Using an ordinary CD player with digital outs, can HDCD data be decoded using an external DAC with HDCD capability?
YES but not only DAC but higher model receiver have this HDCD decoder.

- Dont focus on the HDCD capable player, a good CD player can sing with better recorded CD's (audiophile grade) no matter the sampling rate is.

Thanks sir odyopayl!!  :D I see kasi even generic multiformat players like xtreme putting the HDCD mark and I wonder whether they truly are and I'm not sure if they ever mention the DAC they use. I don't think so. I'm just wodering if one would really get what the equipment says it does.

I was thinking din kasi na kung HDCD marked yung disc, I suppose it was meant to be at its best with an HDCD capable player rather than using a plain vanilla cd player without any external decoder (but as you said upsampling players may sound even better than a vanilla HDCD capable one - did I get that right). Just thinking out loud.   ;D

- This comparison was based on the player with both HDCD & Upsampling (24/192) capability.

Denon 3805 and HK630/635 has a HDCD decoder.

In my case, I could use my CDP's (no HDCD capability) toslink and HDCD would be diplayed on my HK630's front panel. I also recently disovered that my GIEC upcoverting (video) DVD player also had HDCD, funny I didnt notice it for a year  :D, but I dont know how to be sure if it really does HDCD cuz the receiver already has a decoder. But since its a more popular brand in HK, I would assume it does.

There are tons of these HDCD capable players in Hong Kong (just saw them yesterday) but the good branded (HK brands) would cost you around 6-8k pesos.
