Pinoy BIG BROTHER

People's Journal

NEW REALITY SHOW

ABS-CBN bought the rights to air one of the most successful reality TV shows in Europe, "Big Brother." The franchise started in Amsterdam, Holland in 1999 and is now on its seventh season there and in England.  In Australia, it's on its sixth season. The show's reps, Ed Sharples and Anoushka Ban explained to us the mechanics of the game. 6 men and 6 women contestants will be chosen and they will be confined inside a specially designed house (now being constructed near ABS) for three months without any communication to the outside world. No phone,no TV, no radio, no watches, no books or writing materials, just the daily challenges to be given them to fulfill.

All their moves will be monitored on TV and shown daily like in "The Truman Show." Each week, viewers will text their vote as to who'd be eliminated. In the end, the lone survivor will win a house and lot, a car, and P1 million. "The show is now a success in 30 countries," says Ed. "We've just started it in Thailand and The Philippines is the 31st country. Next would be Serbia and the Czech Republic. All applicants will be subjected to a battery of physical and psychological exams to determine if they'd really be fit for the show. The moment youdecide to leave the house, you can no longer come back.

The contestants usually become very popular. One contestant in Croatia sneaked out to watch a soccer match he wanted to see so much. When the TV cameras focused on him and the people saw him, he was mobbed. It was only then he realized how popular he has become because of his exposure in the show. So far, we have two couples who have gotten married after meeting in the show and they now have their own children who we call Big Brother babies."

Who give up more often: men or women? "The ladies as they get so homesick or they feel they're not treated well by their housemates. So far, we've had one gay winner and another who's a transsexual, so it's not really a matter of gender."

ABS is now looking for the 12 finalists. If you're between 21 to 38 and want to apply, call 1-800-5-223-5892 or (02) 929-5892. Who knows, you might end taking home all those big prizes?

Sa Europe ang Big Brother contains a lot of nudity pati showers dun sa house may camera and it can even be access thru the Net in realtime.

Who will be hosting the show? Si Carlos Agassi ba? Ugh.

Exploitation?  Sa lahat naman ng reality shows talaga may certain degree of exploitation.  Kaya nga may prizes eh, hindi naman sasali ang participants if they won't get anything out of it.

Basta alam ng participants na nasa TV sila, its up to them if they behave or not.

Si Carlos Agassi? LOL!  Wag naman!  Sayang ang Franchise!

In the USA, silhouette ng naliligo. Poop - it's close-door  ;D. Pero may camera rin dun eh, if I remember right. I highly, highly, highly doubt this would click here.  Sa US BB, someone exposed her breast, 2 persons were caught  on camera doing it. In a European BB, two person did it that resulted to a baby, nine months later.  ;D  If you think Survivor is controversial, this is way, way, way controversial. IMO.

Carlo Agassi will host? Uh, okay.... ;D

If you want to see a Big Brother like show, there's something on cable now, sa Solar USA Channel/Jack TV. It's called Drawn Together, shown every Saturdays. It's actually a spoof of Big Brother, and the houseguests are familiar cartoon characters.

Warning: Yes, may full frontal nudity sa showers sa Australian version, which you can access by clicking that link.

P15-M set being built for 'Big Brother'

By Jocelyn Valle
Inquirer News Service

ABS-CBN is building a house worth P15 million across its Quezon City estate, for use as the setting of the Philippine edition of the global reality TV hit, "Big Brother."

This was divulged by Linggit Tan, business unit manager and producer of ABS-CBN shows like "Goin' Bulilit" and "Quizon Avenue" when she met the press on Thursday, along with representatives of Endemol, the company behind "Big Brother."

"It will be a complete house, with two bedrooms and a living room," she said, adding that her group had asked occupants of houses on the property, which ABS-CBN owns, to move out.

From the network's 14th-floor restaurant, Tan pointed to a site where a construction team was busy at work. "Tall fences will be built to keep intruders away," she said.

Biggest investment

Tan said the "Big Brother" project is ABS-CBN's biggest investment so far, in terms of money paid for rights. She refused to disclose how much, exactly, but the big smiles on the faces of Endemol's Anuska Ban, executive director for creative and production support, and Ed Sharples, sales director for South East Asia, gave away an answer: huge.

The Philippines is the 31st country to adapt to local conditions the "Big Brother" concept originally thought up by two Dutch men, Joop van den Ende and Jon Mol. (Mol is no longer with Endemol, and sold his shares a few years ago, Sharples said.) The program is on its seventh season in the United States, Germany and Holland.

Endemol is also behind "Fear Factor."

"Big Brother" is a term coined by George Orwell in his novel, "1984," to refer to the state or government which, he predicted while writing the his book back in 1948, would be watching everybody's moves. The show is premised on this, Sharples explained, because cameras and microphones will be operating 24/7 to record the pre-selected 12 occupants' activities.

Tan also revealed that her group had to set up a call center to facilitate inquiries from would-be contestants. "We get 1,500 calls a day," she said. "We'll base our selection on the callers' personalities. Looks aren't our primary concern. The number of applicants will be trimmed down to six males and six females."

The producers will subject the 12 contestants, or housemates, to background checks and psychiatric tests to determine if they are mentally prepared to spend 100 days in isolation with total strangers-in a house with cameras and microphones that will allow the whole country to watch them on television. The housemates will have no contact whatsoever with the outside world-no TV, newspapers, radios and phones!

What they will have is the chance to win a cool million pesos, a house and lot, a car, the privilege to join the list of global "Big Brother" winners, and instant fame.

The housemates will each be given a weekly allowance of P500 for necessities, including food. They will have two sets of tasks: the first one should be accomplished at the end of the day, and the second by week's end.

One member will leave the house at the end of each week. Who will stay will be determined by audience voting through telephone and SMS. In other countries, except Thailand, audiences vote for those they want out.

No director

"There's also no director," Tan said. "The producers will choose which shots will be aired."

She said she first saw the show in Australia last year. "I was there to look for a new editing software," she recalled. Somebody mentioned 'Big Brother' to me. I watched last year's season on tape. I also found out that Filipinos in Australia are 'Big Brother' fans."

Tan believes that Filipinos at home are ready for what Sharples called a "reality soap."

"It's interesting because there's no acting," she said. "It's about building relationships and watching how people behave."

Sharples put it another way: "Essentially," he said, "human nature is pretty much the same anywhere in the world." (Call 1-800-5223-KUYA or [02] 929-KUYA)

Ganun? Audience have the say sa Kuya?

I only saw BB USA Season 3 & Season 5 in full, and partly BB USA Season 4....it's the houseguests who vote for who they want evicted. It's same rin ata with UK and Oz (not sure with this though).  What the audience vote for is who they want to be given special rewards (like a trip outside the house for example).

No, it's not. The basic formula for Big Brother, as explained on the Endemol website, is that the housemates only vote for who the nominees will be. The evictee is eventually selected from those nominees by the voting viewing public.

It was also the audience that was voting for the evictee during the first season of Big Brother US, but that flopped in the ratings, so they decided to retool the American version to make it more similar to Survivor. That sort of worked, and ratings picked up a little bit.

I'm wondering why they went with the American revision for Thailand, though.

"Big Brother will not broadcast images from the toilet on the television or internet unless it is being used for purposes other than for which it was designed. For example, images of two people talking in the toilet may be broadcast."

Buti naman!  ;D

Pero mas exciting kung may interactivity with the audience.  Kasi pag nanonood ka at kumukulo dugo mo sa isang houseguest you can vote against him/her.  Saka sa laki ng ginastos ng ABS-CBN for this franchise I think they wont let the added revenues that can be earned from texting to get away.

I'm for viewers voiting it would be more fun for us right?  ;D

Regarding voting -  Yup, I realize that audience SMS voting is the way ABS gets back all the money they spent for this. ;D I just hope I'm not tempted to vote! Bwahahha!

Is ABS going to air this 3x a week rin?

Parang I'd like to work in this production. Exciting siguro. :)

Kuya is just a literal translation for a title that actually means something else. This is another case where a local translation is a bad idea.

Where "Big Brother" gives you a feeling of intrusion and a violation of privacy (of which the show's concept is based on), "Kuya" gives you a feeling of protection and sibling affection -- which is farthest from the actual Big Brother concept. I'm getting the feeling that the TV audience will tune in to the show expecting something that they won't get.  :(

I for one hope that this takes off because this could possibly redefine Philippine TV viewing. I hope this title change will not affect the prospects of the show.

ABS-CBN is really pushing for this franchise. According to my wife, they are required to wear Big Brother T-shirts every friday!

Kuya na nga ba ang title nito?  Sabi Pinoy Big Brother daw.  Kasi one of the requirement daw ng franchise is to retain the title.

Comes August 22, with three host. I don't like the host. :P The good thing is they're not gonna be on the show much. ;D Now we have to wait if the 12 people they've choosen may "character". Hubby says sana mix of people ---  may kikay, may sosy, may jologs, may sira ulo, etc.  ;D so that it's interesting.

I take back what I said about BB6 USA --- B-o-r-i-n-g. There's an apparent lack of excitement despite them all looking pretty and gwapito. Except for that mala-CIA/KGB tactics ;D of the Arabic/Arabian (?) contestant, it's all booooring now.  :P But I'm still watching. ;D
