your ps1 should be the model with the female rca outs for audio.

yup, that is the SCPH-1xxx series (SCPH1001-USA, 1002-EU & 1003-yata sa ASIA)

pero some modders did said that the multi/av out produces better sound than the built-in RCA outs if unmodded. stock PS1 (1xxx series) already is a good cdp according to them. audio output mod was done by by-passing the op-amp before the rca out. the multi/av out doesn't have an op-amp that is why it is better, "daw".

Take your pick.

sir rascal,

thanks sa suggestion. smps po ang psu ng ps1 at may dalawang output daw, 3.6v at 7.6v. pwede rin palitan ng transformer pero dalawa kelangan. hiramin ko nalang ang converted ps1 ng pinsan ko at tingnan sa loob kung anong bago or pinalit by comparing it to my 110v unit. kung complicated sya, then i will just burn my 1000 pesos to the shop who does the conversion.

Want to revive this thread uli. I have a very well maintained SCPH-1000 PS1. Just bought it from a friend. It's playing right now, stock pa. Once I have myself acquainted with the sound of the stock, saka ko gagawin yung mods. Bka kulang ito ng gainstage, not so sure. Last observation, medyo rolled off yung highs and lows, kaya malamang sabi nila na parang nag-floflow lang ang music, di na didistract attention mo sa details. Medyo mahirap i-control with the ps2 controller, wala akng tv na nakakabit, so bulag ako with respect to skipping forward and backward ng tracks, pindot pindot lang.  ;D

Hi weng, this is a scph-1000 Japanese Model. Wala pa akong remote control, nagpapabili pa. I'm planning on recasing the whole thing and giving it a separate linear PSU. Cge, once I've done the bypass balitaan ko kayo. Malaki daw ang improvements.

Was able to source another psx with RCA outputs, this one is model SCPH-3000. It was released one year after the release of SCPH-1xxx series in 1994. The only difference between them is that the svideo output was removed in the latter version, for cost cutting purposes lang. Otherwise, they have the same DAC and opamp output, which is the only thing that matters for those after its audio. This will probably be the unit I'm going to mod. By the way, they say that these ps models are almost analog sounding. Since I don't have a TT, I cant comment on it, but another thing I noticed on the cd playback of these machines, it seems to be a tad slooower. Baka dahil sa clock nya, pero yung clock frequency nya is supposed to be the correct one.  ???

To be honest sir, that model isn't really ideal for audio. Try to get those models with Audio RCA outputs at the backside. Models SCPH-1xxx or SCPH-3000. Hope this helps.

your console is just like mine 7501 (US model). this model is 2nd the the worst in audio after the 9xxx models. read the link i posted on the beginning of this thread to see what models to look for.

After 1 week of playing with the audio playback of the playstation1, I highly recommend using this as an alternative to more expensive cd players. I tried listening to the stock unit for 3 days and thereafter made the appropriate mods. I removed all the caps connected to the DAC, then attached a MKP cap directly to it, with the other end of the cap connected directly to the rca outputs. One thing I immediately noticed with the mod is the harshness in the highs caused by the electrolytics was definitely gone, in fact, the highs are bit more extended than before. However, as regards the low end, since my speakers don't go beyond 40hz, I didn't notice much difference in that department. As before, this cd player is very very quiet, and like any good dac, its ability to resolve really minute details in music is quite amazing.  Another thing I noticed with the capacitor change pala, the tonality of intruments seems more accurate now.

Here are some pics I took with my celfone:

This is a pic of the psx with the regular controller attached for playback control.

This is another pic, but with the IR module attached, now I can use my remote to control the playback

This is a pic of the topside, if you'll notice the red thingy sticking out from the bottom, that's a big 3.3ufMKP capacitor used as DC blockers. The white thingy you see there is a styro I used to push the lock to have the psx in playback mode, tinanggal ko na kasi yung top cover, di masyadong maisara because of the big capacitor.

Was able to get our old Sony Playstation (SCPH-5501) from the attic and was able to obtain another from a friend (SCPH-1001). Tried the SCPH-1001 two days ago and I must say it really sounds analog-like.

I have checked the schematics and found that the DAC and output analog section for both the SCPH-1001 and 5501 are the same. As to why, many people say the SCPH-1001 is better I still have to find out.

However, basing on specifications and layout the SCPH-5501 looks better than SCPH-1001. For one the laser assy of the 1001 is very close to the switching PSU which means this should be more prone to noise.

i believe that is why the smps is one of the items in the mod list.

i've been silently fiddling with the idea ever since it was posted in a foreign forum, i hope someday i can get my hands on another one.
