After 1 week of playing with the audio playback of the playstation1, I highly recommend using this as an alternative to more expensive cd players. I tried listening to the stock unit for 3 days and thereafter made the appropriate mods. I removed all the caps connected to the DAC, then attached a MKP cap directly to it, with the other end of the cap connected directly to the rca outputs. One thing I immediately noticed with the mod is the harshness in the highs caused by the electrolytics was definitely gone, in fact, the highs are bit more extended than before. However, as regards the low end, since my speakers don't go beyond 40hz, I didn't notice much difference in that department. As before, this cd player is very very quiet, and like any good dac, its ability to resolve really minute details in music is quite amazing.  Another thing I noticed with the capacitor change pala, the tonality of intruments seems more accurate now.

You did not use same value caps? Have you tried replacing it with ceramic?

Using modified Sansui S-M7 bookshelf speakers, to my ears the Sony SCPH-1001 and SCPH-5501 sounded quite similar. Don't know how they would sound in better speakers.

A friend of mine gave me his Playstaion 1 SCPH-1001 (swerte ;D). Still working but the problem is, it was stock for 5 years na at puno na ng dust pati loob so i removed all the dust inside and cleaned the lens with a wet cotton buds, kaya lang when i played some cds and games, ayaw nya magbasa. all are ok except for it's reading capability, ano kaya ang problem nito? Btw, namo-move ba dapat manually yung lens rack? di ko kasi ma-move yung sa lens rack ng unit ko e, stack-up lang kaya 'to kaya ayaw mag-basa or do i have to replace the lens na, may mga available lens pa ba in the market for PS1? I need your advice mga bro, ano dapat kong gawin?

And one more thing nga pala, do i need a memory card ba to play an audio cd, wala na kasing memory card 'to e. Thanks.

Thanks,
reynold :)

Sir Reynold,

http://dogbreath.de/PS1/LaserAlignment/Laser.html

Php 500 last time tumingin ako sa Deeco Farmers Cubao.

Hi bro, I cleaned my PS1 last saturday, removed all the dust inside, cleaned the lens and put enough oil on some part of the lens tray/rack... it worked!!! :D  (though there are cds na medyo hirap sya basahin, i'll read the link you gave me, baka makuha pa sa konting adjustments :))

Tama nga sila, the PS1 sounds good talaga, to think na stock pa ang PS1 ko (No Mods yet and Not yet burned-in in 3 days as  suggested by some audiophiles accdg to the reviews), i can't describe exactly how it performs, but it sounded almost the same as my Sony 333esd... or should i say better than my Sony 333esd, mas Airy and mas malawak ang soundstage ng PS1 SCPH-1001 :) :) :)

Mas maganda mids at mas detalyado compared sa unmodded PS1 (model SCPH-1001) while still retaining iyung visibility noong mga iba't ibang instruments.

BTW, I also modified the switching PSU of the playstation to decrease input noise and output ripple. This way the output voltages would be more linear. Did not consider changing to linear PSU because of size constraints (I also didn't like external PSUs).

The changes:

1. Changed the output caps to Oscon caps and added 0.1uF decoupling caps
2. Changed input rectifier to BYV26D
3. Changed bulk cap with higher capacitance
4. Added 0.33uF X2 differential cap at the AC input

Sir Rascal,

I've tried last night the link that you gave me, nababasa na ng PS1 ko almost all of my cds, there are times nga lang na humihinto for a second yung song and then play uli. Napansin ko lang, hindi ko kasi makuha yung exact value ng Bias and Gain, nag-iiba din kasi yung value everytime pihitin ko yung focus or isa dun sa dalawa...

Right now ang value na nakukuha ko ay...

1.83v   (Laser Intensity ata ito)
1.77v   (Bias)
1.75v   (Gain)

Wala bang magiging negative impact 'to sa PS1?

Thanks bro :)

The voltage has to be measured when the laser is in the upper position. Hold the security switch (B in uppermost image) pressed (put something into the hole)

Speaking of ps1 lens assembly, how are those sold at deeco? Namimili ba or ma-jitter? The replacement assembly I got from one of the stores in raon is really bad. It will read the cds fine, pero ma jitter, puro tsk tsk tsk sa background. I tried bypassing the coupling cap stage entirely at one point pala, and actually this will give a better resolution to the sound, just make sure may coupling cap sa input ng app or pre-amp  ;D

I can't say because I haven't tried them yet. However, when I asked the saleslady about the warranty at Deeco Cubao she said "no warranty". She added further, "gumagana iyan kasi factory tested naman iyan eh"  ???

Nawalan tuloy ako ng gana bumili.

Anyway, I have a friend who will be "donating" a ps1 this April. Hope April comes real soon ;D ;D ;D

Yup, shorting the caps will give better resolution indeed. However, how did you find the sound as far as the details are concerned?

Thanks sir rascal :)

Regarding details, its still there even with the coupling caps, however, they are not as forward sounding. But then again, it might just be a case of bad coupling caps. They've done tests on what coupling caps are best for the ps1. I havent followed the thread for a while, since I've changed my setup temporarily to a computer based music server. I'll start a different thread on this.

Easter revival of the "top-loader" thread. Hehehe.

My suggestion: Try posting an LF. There might be people around who'd like a 2nd home for their PS1s.

For the remote....I bought generic PS1/PS2 IR remote where you place the IR receiver in the joystick port.  You can buy them in playstation shops.

My PS1 is still in stock form and modification will still be lined up.  But as a stock unit, you can already hear its potential.

You can buy the lens at Deeco. I found lens being sold at Deeco Cubao and Deeco Quiapo. If my memory serves me right, it used to cost Php 800.00.
