Behind every great comedy, there’s drama.

Aaron Sorkin takes us behind the scenes of a fictional late-night sketch comedy series. Lately, “funny” has been in short supply at Studio 60. The executive producer just had a meltdown – on live TV. The control room is out of control. The actors are acting up. And that’s just last Friday’s show! Definitely a good show. It genuinely feels like Sorkin took the best elements of The West Wing and Sports Night and blended them together. The acting is top-notch, particularly from Amanda Peet, Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford. The rest of the players are also outstanding - not a lemon in the bunch, down to the characters with just one or two lines.

However...

I certainly hope this isn't the show NBC is counting on as their big saviour that can take them out of fourth place in the ratings. It seems a bit too cerebral when compared to what's been working on other networks like Lost, Desperate Housewives, House and Grey's Anatomy. Definitely not a flashy watercooler show. In fact, I think it may have difficulty finding a large audience, for the same reason that two other excellent "behind the scenes" series (Action and Sorkin's Sports Night) never found mainstream success.

I hope I'm wrong.

Sorkin is indeed back and doing well. It's nice to see his trademark theme in the pilot episode: somebody's being fired. If I recall correctly, Casey McCall and Josh Lyman were both on the brink in Sports Night and The West Wing.

If this show has hard time finding an audience, we'll have Tina Fey's 30 Rock to fall back on.

I just saw the pilot and as early as now, I can say that I love it.

I love like it's a part of me.

A very specific part.

The part that suddenly stands up when there are little children and old women nearby.

Man that's good TV.

NBC has too much invested in this show, they won't just cancel it just like that like they do other shows. They'll give this a good chance to find an audience.

I am in love with this show.

Such strong feelings, but I am actually in love with this show.

There was an explanation as to why ratings didn't pick up when it first aired last Monday (USA) --- many people have seen the pre-air na raw kasi. The real test is when the new episodes air and based on the spoilers, I think I will be wow-ed again.

Nielsen ratings for Monday

The second episode was even better than the pilot. Now, when will we get to see that Crazy Christians skit? Matthew Perry stands out among an already formidable cast. Loved that clock!

Aaron Sorkin drama is on the chopping block.

The curtain is closing on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

The expensive NBC drama about a fictional late-night comedy show, from West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, was the most buzzed-about new show of the fall season, but it hasn't lived up to the hype. The show's premiere was mediocre, earning 13.4 million viewers and coming in second in its time slot against CSI: Miami, and the series has since dipped to third in its time period, with 7.7 million viewers.

Studio 60's low numbers are made worse by the fact that its lead-in is new hit Heroes, the highest-rated new show of the fall season. Heroes earned 14.3 million viewers last week.

The peacock ordered three more scripts for Studio 60, but that doesn't mean they will make it to air. Fox News' Roger Friedman says cast members are already telling friends the show is ending.

NBC has had a tough time this season, with several high-profile expensive shows failing to draw big ratings. Production on the action drama Kidnapped was wrapped and the show was moved from Wednesdays to Saturdays to run out its course, and football drama Friday Night Lights has languished in its Tuesday night spot despite receiving the best reviews of any show this season.

Studio 60's fate is ironic because one of the main storylines is the fight of network head Jordan McDeere (Amanda Peet) to have high-quality programming on the fictional NBS network. In the last episode, McDeere was taking the heat for passing on a lowbrow reality show, while at the same time, in the real world, NBC president Kevin Reilly said that his network planned on devoting the 8 p.m. prime-time hour to cheaper fare such as reality and game shows and less to sitcoms and dramas.

NBC wants to nurture Studio 60, Friday Night Lights & 30 Rock

Entertainment president Kevin Reilly believes that all three shows are too good to cancel. "I'm sitting here right now with some very good television shows that I think have a lot of promise that need to be nurtured a little bit," he says. "I'm pulling for these shows and I'm trying to figure out what's the midseason schedule that can give them a chance, because I really believe some of these can really grow into bigger commercial assets."

Although if I were made to choose between Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights, I'd pick the latter.

There are rumors going about that NBC will dump studio 60 and acquire "Battlestar Galactica" from the sci fi channel to replace it.

Anyone else who stuck with the show? Towards the end, it has become more West Wing than Sports Night. The ensemble was top-notch throughout the season but Sorkin wasn't sure what he wanted to say, story-wise. It did not meet my expectations but at least this show introduced me to the dramatic prowess of Steven Weber and Nate Corddry. They weren't hyped as much as the leads but their characters engaged me the most.

I just "marathoned" the last 6 eps. I liked this show and would have wanted it to go on. I agree with your assessment but I preferred West Wing over Sports Night anyway so... The resolutions also feel tacked on but what can you do when you get cancelled prematurely.
