Best Pinoy movies from the 90's and this decade?
« on: May 16, 2006 at 03:51 PM »
Now that I have Cinema One Global, I can watch Pinoy movies regularly again.  Any recommendations on what's worth seeing from the 90's and beyond?  I've seen some of the more talked about ones on disc:  Tuhog, Hesus Rebolusyonaryo, Bayaning Third World, Crying Ladies, the Mano Po's, Kailangan Kita, Milan, Sigaw, Bcuz of U, Magnifico, Babae sa Breakwater, Pangarap ng Puso.

Any good horror movies?  Aswang?  Bahay ni Lola?

What about comedies?  Tanging Ina?

What's your top ten?

Salamat sa tulong.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Segurista is being shown this month.  Also this month, a Nora retrospective:  Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Condemned, Babae, Ina Ka ng Anak Mo, Himala, Flor Contemplacion Story, and Merika.  A "campy films" festival features Tisoy, Katorse, and Waikiki and continues next month.

I Tivo'ed Condemned.  The print badly deteriorated; scratches throughout the movie and practically all the color washed out.  Tatlong Taon... was in a relatively better condition.  Relieved to discover that 29 years after I first saw it, it's still my favorite Filipino movie.

I don't think Noel approves of Kahapon May Dalawang Bata. Minsan Lang Sila Bata is a documentary right?

Haven't seen too many Filipino films but from what I've seen, here's my recommendations (mostly from 2000 above):

Lihim ng San Joaquin
Pa-Siyam
Babae sa Breakwater
Magnifico
Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros
Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino
Minsan Pa
Bikini Open
Bridal Shower
Sigaw

I'm sure I've forgotten some worthy ones...

Minsan Lang Sila'y Bata is by Ditsy Carolino and Nana Buxhani, three segments dealing with child labor.

I like Kahapan May Dalawang Bata! Who can forget Ara Mina, prancing through the fields in a sheet, like a white carabao? Or the infamous coke-bottle deflowering? Or the ending:

Quote
The film ends in the classic Siguion-Reyna manner--a manner like no other filmmaker on Earth.  Gutierrez as the town priest faces his congregation and asks for forgiveness, particularly from Ara Mina, with whom he has had a torrid love affair.  Mina tearfully starts singing “Ama Namin,” and soon the whole congregation joins in.  It’s a direct rip-off of the ending in Priest, where another priest was also in tears, another girl was forgiving him, and another popular song (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”) played loudly in the background (extra points to Siguion-Reyna, though, for the guts to use the Lord’s Prayer).  Suddenly it starts to rain--which recalls the ending of Leap of Faith, where another holy man ended a drought with another genuine miracle.  Kahapon’s climax recalls the climaxes of so many other movies your head may spin; there’s even a point when Gutierrez starts to tear off his priestly robes, and the film threatens to turn into the finale of The Full Monty.

I love that film...;D

Hahaha, nice...

Oh yeah, Ditsi Carolino and Nana Buxhani... I haven't seen their internationally acclaimed Riles but Bunso is a wonderful, wonderful documentary - outshines the more famous Imelda, which is also a very good Pinoy doc.

oggs, you should get Cinema One, they're having that Nora retro with all those films...

Barring that, get thee to a Pelikula at Lipunan, or one of those film showings at NCCA...

I have CinemaOne, just don't have the time to watch the films and when I do have the time, I share the TV time with my older brother who prefers to watch CSI and Amazing Race... Why can't they just release everything on DVD and give kids like me the chance to view these films at our own pace.

Noel, what a review for KAHAPON MAY DALAWANG BATA! And there's a ripoff also from that movie in Bernal's HIMALA. That scene in the rain.......I know now what Armida will do to you in case your dinner with her will push through! Be careful with her cane, man, I'm warning you.

 ;D

Oggs thanks for posting Matti's PA SIYAM. I almost forgot that one. I'll add it to my lists.

i really liked Rizal sa Dapitan way more than Abaya's Jose Rizal. Albert Martinez did a fine job in the title role and to my surprise even Amanda Page was a revelation as Josephine Bracken.

Which movie?

Thanks, Jojo; that was a real tough production, they went through hell and high water with that one. Whereas Marilou had a Panavision camera for six months, and one of those pavilion tents to rest in between takes (story courtesy of one of her production crew--she's not very popular with the hoi poloi ;D).

I haven't seen all those films that are not available on DVD or VCD (Ebolusyon, Batang Westside, etc.).
But here's an unranked list of movies I've seen that sticked in my head (not necessarily great but commendable well-made movies):

minsan pa
bayaning third world
babae sa bubungang lata
pila balde
la vida rosa
laro sa baga
sa aking paghihintay
imelda
magnifico
segurista
tuhog
dekada 70
gagamboy
prosti
laman
masikip mainit paraisong parisukat
ngayong nandito ka
masikip makirot mahapdi
sigaw
tatarin
tanging yaman
kailangan koy ikaw
keka
madrasta
bata-bata paano ko ginawa
babae sa breakwater
ikaw lamang hanggang ngayon
may nagmamahal sa iyo
bulaklak ng maynila
hihintayin kita sa langit
sakay
kriminal ng barrio concepcion
sa pusod ng dagat
live show
tanging ina

rse, didn't you see Anton Juan's debut feature? It was hilarious!

Masikip, Mahirap, Mahapdi (I think that's the title) got some pretty bad reviews, and it isn't exactly good, but I like it better than Jose Rizal.

I actually don't know him.  What's the title of the movie?

There is one shot in Masikip where it shows a long shot of the slum area on the foreground and on the background you can see the famous Makati skyline.  That image kind of stayed with me.  The actors as well were also very good.

Regarding Jose Rizal, they could have made 5 better movies (or so) for the same money that they spent on that overrated (by some)  movie.

Is "Masikip.." the one with Joyce Kimenez and Jay Manalo who works in a shoe store?

Anton Juan

It doesn't mention his film! Neither does imdb. Wow. ;D

I can't remember the title. It's about AIDs. He had this line of dialogue there that I loved--"Where can we find good steak?" "Let's go to a steakhouse!"

Duh!

Chito Rono's ESKAPO was quite good.
