Hello! We need FULL TIME volunteers for the upcoming 8th Cinemanila
International Film Festival. Experience in events management and
some production exposure would be handy but ENTHUSIASM, COMMITMENT
and AVAILABILITY are also VERY IMPORTANT. Thank you very much. :)

VOLUNTEER WORK for CINEMANILA
If you want to meet interesting people, see award-winning foreign
films and get your adrenaline pumping from working at a crazy
festival pace, volunteer for the 8th Cinemanila International Film
Festival, to be held this year from November 3-15. We are looking for
bright and mature individuals who don't require a lot of hand-
holding to join this year's team.

We are looking for full-time volunteers and interns.

Interns are responsible for a wide range of clerical/administrative
assisting duties, in addition to a bit of fact checking, online
research, and occasional writing. Because we are a relatively small
organization, interns have the opportunity to get to know all of our
staff, and to really see how a film festival is put together. You
will also get the chance to meet filmmakers from all over Asia and
Europe and see Cinemanila movies for free.  We can offer students at
any stage of their college experience academic credit for their
internship. We also accept recent graduates.

Qualifications: Writing, editing, research, interviewing and phone
skills relevant. Basic computer proficiency important.
Internships are available in the following departments: Marketing,
Film Traffic, Guest Services, Theater Coordination, Promotions and
Publicity, Editorial, Creative, Photography and Administration.

Requirements:
To apply, please send your resume with a cover letter specifying
which department you are interested in working as an
intern/volunteer. PLEASE SEND ALL RESUMES DIRECTLY to
[email protected] or [email protected]

NOTES: This internship may qualify for academic credit. Please check
with your school. This is a non-paying internship. Small stipends
are available under certain circumstances and for published work.

PRESS RELEASE:

Cinemanila 2006 Pays Homage to Lino Brocka

A celebration on the life and artistry of film genius director Lino Brocka, highlights the staging of the 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Unquestionably, Brocka personifies the struggles and aspirations of the independent Filipino filmmaker in his enduring quest to gain the respect and patronage of the global audience.   With Philippine cinema among the front-runners in the “digital revolution” that the world is currently seeing, new and younger Pinoy “film masters of the future” (Lav Diaz, Raya Martin, Jeffrey Jeturian to name a few) are repositioning the country back to its rightful place as a major player in the world of cinema, not unlike what the late director did via his “Jaguar”, “Bona”, “Insiang” and “Kapit sa Patalim.”   Thus, it is only fitting to remember the man and his vision, which the Cinemanila hopes to reinforce through its planned activities.   The tribute kicks off on the opening night of the festival dubbed as “Brocka Night”- a gathering of the local actors and actresses who have had the privilege of working with the great “actor’s director.”   A week-long retrospective of Brocka’s internationally acclaimed films and an exhibit of his memorabilia at the NCCA lobby will complete the commemoration activities.

The 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival is set to run its eighth (8th) edition from November 03-15, 2006 @ the Greenbelt Cinemas-Makati, SM Digital Cinemas-Megamall, North Edsa and Mall of Asia and at the NCCA Auditorium, Intramuros, Manila.

Dance, Dreams and Drums Kick Off Cinemanila 2006!

As film is an audio-visual feast so will the grand opening be of the 8th Cinemanila International Film Festival!   On Nov. 03, 2006, the SM Mall of Asia Center Stage turns into a hub of dance, dreams and drums as Cinemanila redefines the film viewing experience with an unparalleled triune opener: “Perhaps Love,” “the Science of Sleep” and “Indio Nacional” (short) with the Radio Active Sago Project.

A colorful Chinese dragon dance extravaganza preludes the 4pm showing of director Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s “Perhaps Love,” China’s first musical in thirty years (30).   A story within a story, the musical’s plot revolves around a pair of lovers who are separated when the girl suffers amnesia. A circus ringmaster takes her under his wing, and the two fall in love. The amnesiac becomes a showgirl, whose former lover reappears and strives to rekindle their lost romance.

Temptingly comparable to Hollywood’s ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Chicago’, this Asian mega-production is sure to capture the Pinoy audience what with its bittersweet tale of love and tragedy and the participation of Ji Jin Hee, star of the hit Korean tv drama, Jewel in the Palace.

At 7pm, the celebration peaks with a twin feature- Raya Martin’s “Infancia En Las Islas De Filipinas, Sin Fecha” (short) plays onscreen accompanied by live music from the Radio Active Sago Project.   This is followed by the Asian premiere of “The Science of Sleep,” officially opening the festival.   Latino dramatic heartthrob Gael García Bernal of  “Y Tu Mama Tambien” a Cinemanila hit in 2003 stars.

The film is part French and part English, filmed entirely in France.

The 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival runs from November 03-15 at the Greenbelt Cinemas, SM Digital Cinemas and the NCCA Auditorium Intramuros, Manila organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, National Commission for the Culture and the Arts and the Independent Cinema Association of

“Heremias” is Cinemanila 2006 Closing Film

‘Heremias’ is the third installment of Lav Diaz’s in depth cinematic exploration on the Filipino psyche and experience, earlier preceeded by “Batang Westside” and “Ebolusyon” both of garnered acclaim and recognition in film festivals all over the world, is the closing film of this year’s Cinemanila International Film Festival.

With a running time of five hundred forty minutes (9 hours), ‘Heremias’ is a unquestionably a challenging film to watch for almost anyone.   The film attempts to reshape the audience’s view of cinema and perhaps even reinvent the medium itself, an exercise given early positive support from Fribourg, Switzerland by awarding the film its the Special Jury Prize.  All that based on an unfinished cut by the director.

Lav Diaz honors Cinemanila with the world premiere of his final cut of ‘Heremias’ and there’s little reason to question the rationale behind this mutual admiration.   Afterall, it was in Boracay in 2004, during the 2nd Cinemanila Co-Production Meeting sponsored by the Hubert Bals Fund and the Groteborg Fund where the seed of ‘Heremias’ got its ‘bed for growth” after successfully securing a generous grant when the Boracay Co-Production Meet ended that year.

This Cinemanila follows up the Fribourg support with a reinvention of its own-an overnight marathon film viewing by the bay, specifically suited for the extensive feature on Nov. 04 in Boracay prior to its second run on Nov. 15 in Greenbelt as Cinemanila’s closing film.

“Heremias,” along with “Kubrador,” is also entered in competition in the festival’s international section.

The 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival runs from Nov. 03-15 at the SM Digital Cinemas, Ayala Greenbelt Cinemas and at the NCCA Auditorium, Intramuros Manila.   Cinemanila 2006 is an endeavor of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines.

Perhaps Love, Asia’s “Moulin Rouge”  Premieres at 2006 Cinemanila

A love story between an amnesiac circus girl, her forgotten lover and the ringmaster who falls in love with her amid a backdrop of song and dance,   an aborted romance between the film’s lead actors and the director’s last chance at reclaiming his dwindling talent in filmmaking.

A movie within a movie, Perhaps Love is directed by one of Hong Kong’s most famous directors, Peter Ho-Chun Sang and features Asian heartthrob Ji Jin Hee of the Korean hit tv drama “Jewel in the Palace,” Takeshi Kaneshiro of "House of Flying Daggers," the beautiful Zhou Xun of "The Little Chinese Seamstress" fame and Jacky Cheung as the story’s star-crossed lovers.

Perhaps Love is the matinee opener of the 8th Cinemanila Film Festival on November 3, 4 pm at the SM Mall of Asia. To evoke the music and mood of the film, there will be a special dragon dance and other festivities by the Chinese Renaissance group.

The festival’s opening is followed by another highly-anticipated film, the Gael Garcia Bernal starrer Science of Sleep at 7 pm.

The 8th Cinemanila International Film Festival is made possible through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP).

GAEL BERNAL’S “SCIENCE OF SLEEP” OPENS CINEMANILA 2006

Cinemanila proudly brings back international superstar Gael Garcia Bernal of the wildly successful Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too) and the critically-acclaimed Motorcyle Diaries to deliver another sensitive performance as a young man whose dream world penetrates his real life after falling love with his beautiful next-door neighbor in the Asian premiere of  “Science of Sleep”, Cinemanila’s opening film on Nov. 03, 7pm at the SM Mall of Asia.

Directed by Michael Gondry, best known for the sleeper hit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Science of Sleep is a voyage into the mind and in the realm of dreams, the movie is an intimate look inside the workings of the mind, its hopes, fears and passions.

Another source of pride for Cinemanila organizers this year is the arrival in the country of Mr. Christian Jeune, Director of the Film Department and Deputy Artistic Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival to sit as Chairman of the Jury in the Digital Lokal Competition of the country’s only internationally recognized festival.

The 8th Cinemanila International Film Festival is made possible through the joint initiative of the the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP).

PRESS RELEASE:

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL DIRECTOR TO SIT AS JURY FOR CINEMANILA 2006

Cinemanila will be the proud host of Mr. Christian Jeune, Director of the Film Department and Deputy Artistic Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival when the director visits the Philippines to sit as Chairman of the Jury in Digital Lokal Competition of the 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Mr. Jeune is responsible for Cannes’ international relations with producers, directors, film festivals and film commissions.   He recommends films for Competition, Un Certain Regard, Cinefondation, and the Shorts Competition.   He has also translated more than 100 English into French.

Mr. Jeune’s involvement in Cinemanila this year is a testament to the increasingly palpable importance given to the country by the international film community in general, and the dynamic digital film revolution in particular- effectively reinventing the landscape of current Philippine cinema and helping it regain its respectability once solidly held in the days of Brocka, Bernal and De Leon.

Last year’s harvest of Digital Lokal films proved to be an enviable crop of critically acclaimed films, many of which are still receiving invitations and citations from various international film festivals; Ala Verde Ala Pobre (Rome Film Festival), Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong (Sebastian-Mention) and ‘Tuli’ (Sundance 2007), to name a few.

The 2006 Cinemanila International Film Festival will run from Nov. 03-15, featuring 75 full length films from 35 countries, playing under various sections of the festival- World Cinema, Young Cinema, Digital Lokal, Philippine Panoram
