Budget recommendation for an AV Receiver
« on: Aug 09, 2023 at 10:53 AM »
I'm planning to upgrade my existing receiver to something that can output 4k. I don't want to break the bank to upgrade though.

Any recommendations for a budget receiver? My ceiling will probably be 20k. The cheaper the better.

It's a bit over your budget, but I would recommend the excellent Yamaha RX-V4A.  It used to be in the lower 20k range but it seems this is priced at 25k these days.

What are your speakers?  Budget receivers are for budget speakers as well.

Those are good speakers that are easy to drive.  Any 4K receiver in the 20K range will not have a problem with your speakers.

I think there are some models of Denons & Pioneers w/ Atmos / DTSx capabilities that are now in the P20k range. A friend of mine here got a Denon around P28k.

Denon is a great match with Mission speakers.  Very simple to use pa ang Denon as compared to Yamaha, Pioneer etc.

Onkyo best match for mission.  I have 2 HT setups both using Mission and Onkyo combo.

If your old receiver has arc then i think theres not much you can benefit from a newer receiver. Im coming from the idea that your streaming data will come from a smart tv then going into the receiver. Old Arc and optical are the same (soundwise - internet info) so arc may not even be necessary. No dd+ for optical but you have 20k still in the bank. If you have separate 4k devices then maybe an upgrade is a good path to take. Especially if one of your plans is adding speakers for atmos.

try looking for the Denon X-1700H (not sure if it will support real ATMOS functions)

Is atmos important for a 5.1 budget speaker setup?

Best to get a 5.1.2 capable receiver for true ATMOS right out of the box.
