usually, if you don't have the code for your unit, the remote can look it up for you. they have a feature by which you input some sequence, point it at your equipment... and wait till something happens. usually the unit will power down when the remote finds your unit's code. i'm not too sure if there's a chance your generic might be in there though. if not, your only choice would be a learning remote, by which you would also need the original one.
