I own an h/k avr 4000 (bought it a month ago at megamall) and can say this is one hell of a beast! don't worry about its 50 W power rating as it features a high-current design. this will be more than you'll ever need. the only glitch at the moment is that the avr 4000's On Screen Display (OSD) is currently default to PAL so you'd need a multisystem TV to decode its signal, plus some units have non-learning remotes with them so test first before buying. Audio and home theater play nicely with this beast. Regarding the Yamaha RXV-800, well I can say that it excels in home theater (6.1 channels - rear center is phantom) but lack musicality with audio. Test both receivers first before making a decision..

Yeah, sa Megamall ko rin na text yung HK AVR4000, it sounded really GREAT, both for Audio and HT.  Pero Im having second thoughts sa Yamaha RXV 800 (since they are in the same price range 28t to 30t) since mas madami syang added features.

Thanks for the response muscleboy

Harman/Kardon AVR4000 FAQ
I wrote to Harman/Kardon Customer Support about AVR4000 OnScreenDisplay topic:

my friend bought the AVR4000 but we cannot use the On-Screen-Display
because it keeps on PalSecam Display when using only an NTSC TV.
Is there any buttons or reset combination to make this OSD be in NTSC signal?
thanx a lot.

And then their reply:

There is unfortunately no remedy for the problem that you have described.

The avr4000 that your friend has is a European model. The on screen display is thus encoded in PAL.

There is a US version of the avr4000 which is designed to be compatible with NTSC tvs. There is no possibility to alter the OSD on a particular model.

Yours Sincerely,
Kevin Finnerty

Customer Support.

AVR4000 = European Model
AVR310 = American Model

vax, thanks a lot! I gave them a call today and asked the guy Gener if the model that was released in the US had and NTSC OSD. He said that all the OSD's worldwide are in PAL - Can anyone confirm this?

guys,
The OSD problem is just a small thing. Anyway, you can always see the settings on its front panel when you make adjustments so no big deal with the OSD. If you're more concerned on this rather than the sound, then by all means get another brand.

According to Hans Tan of Beyond Innovation, they can fix the OSD but the unit should be brought to their shop in Ortigas. I've been in contact before with Roger Ross (Harman/Kardon Prod. manager, asia pacific) and he has sent Hans a solution to the OSD problem.

For me, I'd stick with my Harman AVR4000. If you're only into home theater then any receiver brand would do, but if you're also into audio hifi then I'd suggest you grab a Harman..

BTW, i've demoed an RX-V800 yamaha before but i still bought a Harman. The yammy just didn't sound right on audio (stereo) for me..
Just my 2 cents worth..  :D

muscleboy,

pareho tayo ng speakers.  what electronics do you use?  i use NAD.  what sub did you match your Dyns to?  i used REL.

i still love 'em.  it'll be some time before i even think of an upgrade.  by getting the dyns, i can now focus my savings to other parts of my system.

rtsy, i would have preferred a NAD but I think the price is too much for me. i'm using an Energy EXL-8 as my sub. just sufficient bass for my small room. i'll probably buy a bigger sub when i have the budget, maybe a Dynaudio, M&K, Velodyne, SVS, or a bigger Energy siguro.

tama ka dyan sa dynaudio, it maybe the last pair of speakers i'll ever use. hehe.. i might buy floorstanders din siguro but i'm 101% sure dynaudio's din ang kukunin ko.

robertj,
maraming salamat bro for calibrating my system last friday night (hanggang morning hehe) ;D
malaki ang naging improvement esp. sa localization ng left and right channels sa home theater mode. the center delay adjustment did the trick din. pinanood ko tuloy uli yung mga dvds ko to hear the difference.  ;D
makabili nga rin ng SPL meter para anytime i'd try to change things, tama lagi ang measurement.
hats off to you, galing mo brother!!!

Muscleboy,
The rating of your AVR-4000 is 50W on what impedance, 8 ohms?  And I think Dynaudio speakers have lower sensitivity of, I think 86db or lower.  I'm just concern, what's the setting of your volume dial on reference tone?  And try to watch movies on this setting while monitoring your AVR's heat dissipation.  I did not buy the HK because of its lower power rating and I might be wrong.  My friends were also concern on the rating of Denon to complement lower sensitivity of NHT and AT.  Please comment based on your experience.  Thank you.

knightro,
yep it is rated at 50w at 8 ohms and of course higher at lower impedance levels. since harman is using a high-current design for their receivers, at 50w would be something like 100w or 120w yamaha. hk's get hot but i don't worry about them a lot since high-current designs are usually like this. and because of this, hk's could handle speakers of different sizes and sensitivity levels.

Is it possible to know a receivers current rating (not sure if that's the correct term) from its spec sheet?

I am interested in comparing HK vis-a-vis Yamaha.

DTS,

This is just a sample comparison since you did not specify the exact model to be compared between Harman/Kardon and Yamaha.

Just click the links…..

Thanks Vax. But what particular spec do I look at in order to know that one receiver is of a higher current than the other?

In short, I'd like to know where I can see (in the specs) HK's so-called High Current design compared to others.
