Oh no...HD-DVD is now in  "upperhand" over Blu-Ray/PS3. The one who gets pirated first is the one who will succeed?

The one who gets pirated first is the one who will succeed?

Well, that's one way of looking at it.

My view is that any copy protection system, no matter how sophisticated, can be cracked.  It's just a matter of how tenaciously determined the hacker is.

Why not look at it in the reverse?

Is it the format that gets hacked first becomes the one to succeed first?  Or is it the format that succeeds first becomes the one to get hacked first?

Take the case of DVD-A and SACD, where decryption tools are still very crude.  Not much development there because the formats are commercial failures.  Hackers are not investing much effort in decryption simply because they're not interested.

HD DVD already had the upper hand even before the hack rumor circulated.   ;D ;D ;D

It's  the AACS copy protection that is cracked.  Not the format.  Unfortunately AACS is the same for both HD DVD and Blu ray.  Cracking AACS means hacking into the security of both formats, not just HD DVD.

This is also the same views by experts at avsforum.com and other sites.  The crack was just the title keys and future title releases will invalidate the software player involved.  Poor powerDVD, they have to release a new version.   ;D

Yes, this thread should be merged with the other.

You're absolutely right.  If AACS has indeed been compromised, then it would be accurate to say that both formats are on the way to being completely decrypted.

However, Muslix64's method presently applies only to HD DVD, although it's just a matter of time before Blu-ray comes next.  I understand that Muslix64's decryption method applies on a per-title basis at the moment, but I'm sure he's working on a complete decryption program that would work on all titles.  If he doesn't perfect it, somebody else will.

But note that it's not just AACS for both formats.  Blu-ray has an added modifiable copy protection software called BD Plus from Cryptography Research in San Francisco, as a safeguard in case A.A.C.S. is compromised.  I hear that BD Plus is "completely independent" from AACS (http://corporatemedianews.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=55119).

Industry executives say that Microsoft opposed the Cryptography approach because it would shift control to the studio and away from hardware makers.

True, but BD+ is an optional measure not yet implemented on any of the BD releases.  Except for FOX which was brought on board BD due to the promise of BD+, I heard that none of the studios has implmented it in their BD releases.  Neither has Fox.  In the first place, it's still not ready to be deployed.

I see.  Wala pa palang implemented na BD Plus.

You're still right.  If the AACS hack rumor is true, then copy protection is considered compromised for both formats.  It's just a matter of time before Blu-ray is officially cracked.  Even if BD Plus is implemented on Blu-ray, it would probably be easier than AACS to crack since BD Plus is merely intended as a backup copy protection and would presumably be less robust.

Siguradong ninenerbyos na sila...   ;D ;D ;D
