Magnavision Summer 2007 Heat Wave Sale
« on: May 03, 2007 at 11:05 PM »

Magnavision's heating up the summer with their famous annual markdown sale! This year, they're spicing up the event by offering VCDs and DVDs aside from music CDs so this should be extra interesting for PinoyDVD members. No word on the exact discounts or titles that will be available so please post here if you come across anything interesting.

Looks interesting. I'll pass by there tomorrow after work, since the hospital I'm affiliated with is actually along Quezon Avenue already.

Quezon Ave. is pretty big. Anyone know roughly where along Quezon it is? Like, closer to EDSA or closer to Espana? Beside what buildings?

Thanks.

This is closer to Edsa, Mr. Hankey. ;)  Tamang-tama, I have some Magnavision titles on mind.

hello may I ask if coming from espana, Is it in the side of hitop supermarket or the other side. Is it before the breakoff/split of road, one going under one going on top. This road always confuses me. If its pass this, do I take underpass, or the right side road. Thanks

If you're coming from Espana, it will be a little bit beyond National Bookstore Quezon Ave., on the opposite side of the street. Directly across Tong Yang restaurant. If you bring a vehicle, they do not allow parking outside the building, you have to park (free) in one of the basements.

It was a total waste of time for me. No Imported DVD9's on sale. The only sale items are BUDGET titles. The sale scheme is roughly:

Newer "Budget" Titles - 2 for 500. Titles like Talladega Nights and The Closer are included.

Older "Budget" Titles - 3 for 600. Almost all the Php 299 Columbia titles you normally see in Astro in clear cases with poorly printed cover art, and many Hallmark titles.

Old Canal Image Titles/fullscreen local DVDs mastered from Betacam - 2 for 250. Includes The Elephant Man, The Grifters, Michael Dudikoff-type B-movies, etc.

That's all. I went home with nothing.

Mr. Hankey:  thanks for saving us the trouble, planning to go there later today.  I was hoping to catch a couple of DVD9s that i missed at the Astro Podium events.

What makes it even more annoying is that they actually have the DVD9 titles on display, at full 895 price.

What might be a good buy is: The newer Universal Budget DVD9 re-releases that sell for 350 each (like Jesus Christ Superstar, Kinsey, etc.) are also included in the 2-for-500 scheme. That would be a hundred pesos savings each, and those are good quality copies.

Will find time to drop by this weekend. I'm curious about their budget DVD9 line and am itching to find out if Magna really left the video untouched.

i went there today, as well. the problem is, they are still stocking so i didn't see the complete titles. but there were rare titles like HOUSE SEASON 2 R2 and MONK SEASON 4 R2. so far, 'yun lang ang nakita kong rare titles.  then if you buy the imported dvds, you get one free budget dvd of your choice.
Absolutely no regrets!

Yep, meron Mr. hankey. Tig-isang copy nga lang 'yung nabanggit. Meron ding Friday Night Lights R2 (movie), isa rin lang. I went there at around 4PM. Nag-aayos pa rin sila. Mas okay siguro pumunta kapag naka-set na lahat.

Come to think of it, during our last meeting, the Marketing Manager mentioned something about it being easier to bring in TV series collections from R2/R4. Apparently, packaging costs for R3 box sets have to be shouldered by the local distributor whereas the PAL collections can be brought in fully-assembled. They weren't hot on the idea though.

How much was House S2 going for?

I got Casino Royale 2disc for 700 and Indiana Jones Box Set for 1,000 only.

Correct! This is mostly what I got. They will be coming up with new titles every week, so If you leave near the area, its still worth to check it out.

Looks like I just arrived too early. This is the opposite of Astro sales - there, if you arrive late, ubos na.

Here, if you arrive early, wala pa.

It's very close to my place of work. I'll give it another shot, maybe they're done repricing the 895s I saw on display. I'm positive I saw the Casino Royale 2-Disc with an 895 sticker and no other markings this lunch time, since I was looking for interesting discounted titles to post about on this thread. Looks like they really were still setting up.

She gives the discount. It just so happen that I asked her about something and asked for a further discount since I travelled from Mandaluyong pa.

i wonder how much discount she'll give to a way down-southerner(pque) like me? hehe

Honestly, like what Mr. Hankey had mentioned, the "sale" was not really a sale, its the same thing that you see on regular video stores, so its really not worth the trip especially for you to come all the way from the South. It just so happen that I am near the area so I decided to drop by. The only reason i bought those titles is I dont wanna go home empty handed c",)

But you can still try, they will be more titles to come.

Nope, they accept credit cards as well but since there's only 1 cashier, the line can get long during peak hours.

I bought 5 DVDs from the "Budget" section, but all were 1-disc DVD9 releases: :)
  • Zoom: Academy for Superheroes (Php250)
  • MirrorMask (Php250)
  • Squid & the Whale (Php200)
  • Ringers: Lord of the Fans (Php200)
  • Meet Joe Black (Php200)

I scanned the discs when I got home and noticed no degradation or unusual artifacts in the transfers. Magna says that their dual-layer releases are sourced from the R3 masters and I'm inclined to agree with them. These copies look pretty good IMHO - even "Meet Joe Black" which has runtime of 180 minutes but uses the same anamorphic transfer from the 1999 widescreen edition.

firewired, quick question:

Are the Special Features intact for these Budget DVD9 releases you purchased? If so, I may start passing on the 895 imported Magna DVD9s and begin purchasing these instead. The only downside would be the substandard packaging, and as I've repeatedly stated on these forums, that's a very minor consideration for me.

Oh, and can you please tell your Magna contacts that indicating single or dual layer on the back of their budget titles would definitely improve sales. Thinking they were single layer was the only reason I wasn't buying them!

Based on the features lists on DVD Empire, Zoom and Squid are complete. I'll verify MirrorMask tomorrow.

I already asked Magna for a list of confirmed DVD9 budget releases and they said they'd forward it early next week. I'm actually inclined to shift as well considering the price difference. Next trip, I may pick up the Php250 version of "Marie Antoinette" since the listed features seemed identical to the imported version which was selling for Php330.

Update: Just checked my mail and they forwarded a preliminary list of confirmed DVD9 budget releases.
