In my history of watching movies, its the only one that I track back from my childhood days when I first saw it televised on channel 4, after I was rejected from the Manila Film Center screening in 1983. My curiosity paid off after I finally saw the integral version in World Cinema Centennial celebration at Sm Megamall in 35 mm print!

Two of Jose Javier Reyes films were on my lists, PARE KO and MAY MINAMAHAL. PARE KO has teen angst theme possibly one of the sensible movies about youth and much better than Brocka's BURGIS.

100 Acclaimed Filipino Movies

That's according to roving international film critic-writer Mel Tobias
in his fourth and latest book, One Hundred Acclaimed Tagalog Movies
(Sineng Mundo, Best of Philippine Cinema), published by Peanut Butter
Publishing in Vancouver, Canada, where Mel is now based. His three other
books are Flashbacks -- Hong Kong Cinema After Bruce Lee (Gulliver
Books), Memoirs of an Asian Moviegoer (South China Morning Post) and KPS
Video Express -- the Movie Guide, Volume 1.
A native of Santa Rosa, Laguna, Mel (who writes the column Living in
Canada for the Philippine STAR) stayed for 24 years in Hong Kong where
he worked as promotions director of the former British colony's leading
brewery, at the same time writing about films for The Hong Kong Standard
and, using the pen name Eli Carpena, for South China Morning Post and
other Hong Kong magazines and newspapers.
He was also New York Variety's Hong Kong correspondent. For more than
two decades, Mel has been covering film festivals around the world,
including Cannes, Hawaii, Sebastian, Madrid, San Francisco, Toronto,
Tokyo, Chicago, Berlin, etc.
In Vancouver which he now calls "my second home," Mel is the
Entertainment/Lifestyle Editor of the Philippine Chronicle. On the side,
he also acts in theater.

I wonder if the movie Desire is the same one that has the theme sung by Deborah which has the line: "Hello Joe....Please don't say goodbye." Can anyone confirm this? I believe the movie also stars american actor John Saxon (of A Nightmare On Elm Street fame as Nancy's cop father).

the song by Deborah was indeed the theme song of Eddie Romero's film Desire. it was originally titled Hello... Joe, Goodbye which also starred Mark Gil & Tetchie Agbayani...

100 Greatest Filipino Films

I'm glad that Oro Plata Mata and Karnal are not in the list, Noel. They're overrated in my opinion. But where's Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon and all the other Romero films for that matter? I'm also partial to Jeturian's Tuhog so I'm quite  :o that it isn't there. But nitpicking aside, it's comprehensive enough. I have to admit though that I haven't seen about a quarter of those films you've mentioned, so there.

Not a fan of Oro Plata or Ganito, I'm afraid. The latter has a great script, but the camerawork is flat as a pancake; the former has some style, but the script's underdeveloped--not to mention I thought it tended to demonize the lower classes.

Mortal I thought the real auteur was Ricky Lee, and that was one of his best scripts; May Nagmamahal I thought showed Diaz Abaya's skill as a mature filmmaker, and some of her best qualities, that of a maternal champion of social issues, but in a story that was actually moving.

If I were to include a Romero, I might include Aguila. But I need to see it again, it's been so long.

Nice lists, Jojo! Its about time that a Gosiengfiao flick be recognized. UNDERAGE, NYMPHA & TEMPTATION ISLAND will be included on my lists also.

Temptation Island? Why not? This movie left me in stitches and is actually a classic (to many I hope)

Coming up with a Top 100 is extremely hard especially for a non-hardcore cineaste like me. Can't you guys come up with criteria, like social impact, unforgettability factor, etc.,

Basta ako, I will include 60's DANCE-O-RAMA starring Susan Roces & Jose Mari Gonzales. Baliw na baliw ako sa movie na ito!  ;D ;D

Basta ako, I will include 60's DANCE-O-RAMA starring Susan Roces & Jose Mari Gonzales. Baliw na baliw ako sa movie na ito!  ;D ;D

Despite DANCE-O-RAMA's flimsy plot (an excuse to promote the T.V. dance show to which the movie was based) is highly entertaining mainly due to its charming cast. ;)
I remembered recording this movie via cable when there's still Viva Cinema back then. :D

Nice list. By the way, Basag Ang Pula starring Ace Vergel or is it a movie starring Vilma Santos? In Basag, it has Snooky Serna.

Looked at Aguila recently and I think it's Romero's underrated masterpiece. Plus it has a real look, thanks to Mike De Leon, comparable to and even superior I think to Oro PLata Mata (it's cleaner, less pretentious). Will probably add this to my top 100 soon...

I'm dying to see Suzara's MGA BILANGGONG BIRHEN which I heard has some resemblance or even better than Peter Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK?

Bumped PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA on my Top Ten Lists......arguably the greatest Filipino horror film ever made. I wish I could see also The Kid's zombie film made during the early 70's and the black and white erotic film NYMPHA.

Celso is one hell of a genius filmmaker! Even Peque is so inspired on his films.  Count it....he can do anything from horror, epic, drama, action to bold genre.

Patayin is easily the most frightening. Greatest? I keep leaning to Gerry de Leon's Ibulong Mo sa Hangin. Or arguably Kisapmata.

alam mo keats, i met direk celso a few years ago. i interviewed him for a segment sa show show ni loren legarda noon sa abc 5. mabait sya. we arrived late in the evening sa house nya (cavite o laguna ba yun?) pero hintay nya pa rin kami. he even autographed my vcd of burlesk queen. alam mo, kahit sya wala nang masyadong kopya ng old classics nya. ang mostly meron sya na ipinakita nya sa amin 80s-90s bold films nya (sa vhs pa). sayang nga lang walang photo op kasi wala akong dalang camera hehe.

Celso is also a terridic actor--see him as the ambitious mayor in Bagon Hari, or even in I forget which lousy movie, it was either an early Laranas or early Matti, but he stuck out as the only thing that was both over the top and just right.
