JJ Abrams' Fringe
« on: May 27, 2008 at 08:23 PM »
From Wikipedia
Fringe is the fourth TV Series co-created by J. J. Abrams. It is produced by Warner Bros./Bad Robot, and deals with a research scientist named Walter Bishop (who Orci describes as "Frankenstein mixed with Albert Einstein"), his son, and a female FBI agent who brings them back together. The show is being described as a cross between The X-Files, Altered States and The Twilight Zone."

From TV.com
FBI agents Olivia Dunham and Peter Bishop are faced with a rapidly spreading unexplained phenomenon of the threatening kind. In an attempt to stop the spread, they enlist the assistance of Bishop's estranged father, the institutionalized scientist Dr. Walter Bishop.

The two-hour pilot of Fringe is now available! You know where to look.  ;)

Fringe is the fourth TV Series co-created by J. J. Abrams (Felicity, Alias, Lost) and also his fourth collaboration with co-creators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Alias, Mission Impossible III, Star Trek). It is produced by Warner Bros./Bad Robot, and deals with a research scientist named Walter Bishop (who Orci describes as "Frankenstein mixed with Albert Einstein"), his son, and a female FBI agent who brings them back together. The show is being described as a cross between The X-Files, Altered States and The Twilight Zone. Like Abrams' previous TV shows, it will have an overarching mythology. Jeff Pinkner will serve as executive producer/showrunner. The Fringe series premiere is scheduled for August 26, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. ET

It started off a bit sloppily but quickly picked up by the latter half. I'm eagerly awaiting this series. If they play their cards right this could really turn into the next X-Files.

Loved the last scene, by the way. :)

Where oh where is episode 2?  I think it's been two or three weeks already since I saw the pilot.

Yeah, the pilot airs on August 28 on FOX, so your next new episode will still be in September. And since it's FOX, you better hope it does well immediately in the ratings, since they notoriously cancel brand new high-profile shows after 2 or 3 weeks if the shows don't perform.

Lots of familiar faces here--Lance Reddick is well-known to Lost fans as the mysterious Matthew Abaddon, but fans of The Wire and Oz also know him for playing key characters on those shows. Speaking of Oz, Kirk Acevedo also played a main character in that HBO prison series.

Mark Valley played Atty. Brad Chase in Boston Legal, and before that he was also on The 4400. Blair Brown had her own TV series in the late 80's, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.

As for the two male leads, Australian actor John Noble, who plays Dr. Walter Bishop, had his most famous role to date as Denethor in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, while Joshua Jackson played Pacey Witter, one of the main characters in the teen drama Dawson's Creek.

Derivative of some X-Files episodes such as "Squeeze", "Tooms" and "2Shy". Anyway, they started out with a strong pilot so, I'm still hopeful.

Just watched the entire 2-hour pilot in full--great stuff! Hopefully they'll be able to  sustain it for the rest of the season. Loved the way the show displays the captions when the location shifts--very Panic Room-like.   8)

Saw the 2nd episode. Not bad at all, as more evidence of the "pattern" starts showing up...i just hope this pattern doesn't include Milo Rambaldi, The Hanso Foundation, or the Tagruato Corporation.   ;D

I wasn't an X-File fan, so, when I read others posts that it's a mix of X-files and so and so, I didn't exactly want to see it. But I guess curiosity got the better of me and I must admit, after watching the first two episodes so far, I'm hooked! At the start, I was like, "Oh no! Another Fox/Mulder-type lead character!" But then the twist and the...well, you better watch it na lang.

Oh, and I love thow they use a three-dimensional National Geographic-like (or is that Discovery?) lettering of every scenes' location.

^And the X-Files episodes that came to my mind after watching episode two of "Fringe" were "Teliko," "Young at Heart," and "Scary Monsters." ;)

Well, the ongoing background arc about 'The Pattern' promises something that the X-Files couldn't deliver: Answers.

If you've watched the X-Files series finale you'll know they did answer everything  ;)

But it was the worst episode in television history  ;D

Just watched the 3rd episode--again, not bad. Another pattern case, this time involving "The Ghost Network", which also happens to be the episode title.

I noticed that in this episode and also in the previous one, Darin Morgan is now listed in the credits as "Consulting Producer".

The "Flukeman" must be experiencing dejavu on the set sometimes.

Just watched the 4th episode--it's the best episode yet, with lots of strangeness, adding more mystery to Walter & Peter's history. This show keeps getting better and better...

John Noble gives an awesome performance here throughout, and that last part where he talks to Peter just before the episode ends deserves an Emmy nomination.  8)

Forgot to add that when I first saw the poster or heard about Fringe, I though, the poster and the name ringed a bell (Massive Dynamic pun intended). And when I was browsing my downloaded comic books...there it is. A Fringe comicbook from Wild Storm. It's a 6-part series with issue #1 hitting the shelves only last month. The first part deals with a young Walter Bishop when he started teaching at Harvard and his first encounter with William Bell and a substory about mind transfer experiements.
