Caregiver and other Star DVDs (a complaint)
« on: Jul 24, 2008 at 10:52 PM »
Was Caregiver released at theaters with a 4:3 aspect ratio?  The DVD is 4:3 (as is most (all?) other Star DVD release).

At 1.33:1, it has small black bars on the top and bottom, indicating that the original aspect ratio must be higher (1.66:1?).  Why can't Star Records make anamorphic widescreen DVD?   And most of their transfer suffers from grain.  These are new films and with their state of the art equipment, you expect more (in terms of PQ and AQ). They should also include the original Pilipino subtitles (not just English), they are already available, not that you have to hire somebody to translate them...

Yes, other local studios also suffers from the same problems, but Star DVDs are the most pricey at 600 for new films, you expect a little more...

What I noticed about these Star Cinema releases is that if you check the trailer of the main feature that comes with their DVDs, it's usually in widescreen non-anamorphic 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Then the actual movie itself is 1.33:1.  ::)

Very pricey indeed. And they rarely go on sale.

If the trailers reflected what was shown in the theaters, then it look like the film (at least for Caregiver) was shot in 1.33:1 then matted to widescreen for theaters.  So the DVD show more picture than what was shown at theaters, which aspect ratio reflect the director's original vision is not known...

Still, the other complains about picture quality (and lack of Pilipino subtitle) stands.

they NEVER go on sale. I've noticed that their target market is the balikbayans.

Mura lang sa kanila eh ung ECP releases nila. Speaking of, when are they releasing MISTERYO SA TUWA and SOLTERO.  ;D

If ever they release Misteryo Sa Tuwa on DVD, sana naman magkaroon ng kahit isang special feature.  A small featurette about the late Abbo dela Cruz would be nice.

most of the time, pagtitipid ang nagiging rason nila. remastering movies cost a lot and they don't want to spend much kaya hindi sila naglalagay ng deleted scenes or additional features that are not shown on TV.  naghahabol din siguro ng kita para mga consumers abroad. para maiwasang tumangkilik ng pirata. cause remastering would mean longer time before it hit the shelves.
Absolutely no regrets!
