If you have the following you can benefit from esata:
1) Vista Home basic or premium and up (XP can recognize esata, but you'll have to reboot and from my exprience, it disrupts the registry and confuses the PC on initial startups)
2) MoBo that has incorporated esata I/O
3) If #2 is unavailabl, buy this:

4) Working esata dock(not all works, you'll have to establish 1st that your esata in your MoBo works, or test in a friend's PC with a working esata).
Once you have fulfilled the above, the best way to do it is to transfer files intially to your PC's HDD to maximize speed, however, if you have one of those newer docks that have the esata connector but dual bays, you can always transfer files directly via drag and drop in your PC.
The dual bays used to be available at TipidPC, I believe the seller is Nerdherd, just search for him and call, he is very accommodating, however, you'll have to check his products because not all his esata works(from my experience) but he is always amenable to an exhange or a money back arrangement.

BTW, here's an image of the Dual Bay Docking:

I'm using windows xp and installed this esata bracket. Just like what alfie said, I need to reboot for it to recognize the device.

I'm wondering if this has to do with the operating system or my hardware(Pentium 4 Hyperthreading).

Actually puwede ang XP basta merong AHCI capability ang motherboard. Medyo kumplikado nga lang ang pag-install ng capability. Meron ako ngayong gamit na Gigabyte 780G mobo na XP na merong plug'n-play capability para sa esata.

In case you have a Gigabyte 780G mobo and want to have AHCI here's a link on how-to:

I don't think I have  AHCI. I'm using a P4 530 Prescott socket 775LGA D915GAV. Do you think a windows 7 upgrade will solve the problem?

I don't know, since I've only used Vista and have not tried W7.

Maybe some members who did like Firewired can answer your question, although, you might have a problem with the MoBo, I once used a MSI MoBo,and no matter what upgrades I did, esata has remained undetected. :P

If I may ask, how reliable are those 1TB external hard drives ?  At a mere 5T, they seem to provide the best cost-benefit.  I prefer those smaller ones powered by USB cables.  My old 180GB external drive hooked to a desktop PC proved very useful in a 4-hour power outage lately when I used a laptop with it.  TIA

The biggest USB powered portable HDD Ive seen has a capacity of 500GB and costs about 1.5x compared to self-powered 1TB external drive.

1TB drives both external and internal are highly reliable.   Between the wife and I, we share more than 20 already, mostly WD Green, mainly for data storage - no problem whatsoever.

I always turn off my PC when I plug in any hardware, except of course yung mga nasa USB connection lang...
I'm a bit cautious sa mga hardware, baka may mag-short maninira ng slot or worse the MOBO...

inoff ko muna bago ko turn on ung esata hdd. the previous connection of usb took 10-15 minutes to transfer a 4-5gb file, ung esata took less than 8 minutes ;D

50% faster file transfer looks OK, but 8 minutes to transfer 5GB is still rather slow (that's only 10.41MB/sec).   Were you multitasking ?

Yes affected if you are using the same HDD.  Parang one-way street na nagsalubungan.

USB2.0 transfers can reach between 20MB-40MB/sec

ESATA can easily achieve twice as fast as that.

The speed ratings on paper are sooooo much higher than these numbers.

Question:

Is there a posibility na mas mabilis madamage ang 3.5 external harddisk than 2.5 external harddisk?

Thanks
