it depends....

if you're backing up original DVD which i assume you are......the best way to go would be for any 1TB drive internal or external, and a PCH-a110 as your media player :)

Reason> the PCH reads ISO files/images taken from your DVD, allowing you to simulate playing the DVD itself, preserving all the extras/menus of the original DVDs.

...now if you just want to watch the movies and save as much space as possible while having excellent PQ with minimal features, i suggest ripping vids using h.264, then the container is up to you.  if you do decide to go this route the WDTV + 1TB is indeed the way to go :)

Thanks guys for your responses.  I took stock of my HD movies and they're still manageable for now.  What I need is to start conserving my 500GB HDD by offloading some to blank DVDs.  Do you guys offload your downloaded movies onto a disk like a blank DVD9?  I have many MKV files that can fit into one.  And if you play directly from a disk, are they fast enough?  TIA

Tinamad akong gawin eto after a short while.  Ang bagal kase ng burning to DVD-R and whenever I needed to copy files stored in DVD-R back to an HDD, super bagal din ng process.   No problem ang playback speed.

I was afraid of that. Transferring an 8 GB file from one drive to another is also slow but I can imagine how slower that would be to a DVD9.  If I had no patience burning blank CDs in the past, I don't think I'd be on DVD9.  I guess the only option is to get a second internal SATA drive or an external 1TB or 1.5TB drive.

Definitely,..!

I wasn't expecting too much ng kumuha ang WD TV Live,
ang makikita ko, I was mistaken, napakaganda ng PQ and AQ

I'd recommend this,...
