Some memorable mommy roles in Philippine cinema
« on: May 10, 2009 at 06:49 AM »
In celebration of Mother's Day, here are some memorable motherly portrayals in Filipino movies:
Lolita Rodriguez getting pregnant with her son-in-law's child in Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo.
Nida Blanca as a grief-stricken widow asking for her adoptive son to be brought back to the orphanage in Saan Darating Ang Umaga?
Helen Gamboa finally finding her daughter who is now a successful lawyer in Kailan Mahuhugasan Ang Kasalanan? Maricel Soriano battling for child custody in Separada.
Lorna Tolentino haplessly looking for the child she gave up for adoption in May Nagmamahal Sa Iyo.
Vilma Santos' back-to-back roles, as a mother of two kids from different fathers in Bata,Bata..Paano Ka Ginawa? and as a mother finding her identity in Dekada '70
Gina Pareno's warm hearted mother with a tough exterior in Sana Maulit Muli.
And my favourite:
Gloria Romero as a pious matriarch who suffered with Alzheimer's in Tanging Yaman.
And to push further the definition of a mother:
Sharon Cuneta as a sympathetic stepmom in Madrasta.
Judy Annn Santos' mysterious surrogate mother in Ploning.
And even further:
Nathan Lopez as the devoted title character in Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros.
The worst?
Vilma Santos
as the supposedly downtrodden and yet hysterically irrational (and irritating) young mom in Paano Ba Ang Mangarap?

Movie icon the late Nida Blanca gave a powerful, tour-de-force performance as a mother who later learned that her son (Gerald Madrid) knows the mistress (Angel Aquino) of her husband in Jeffrey Jeturian's brilliant directorial debut.......SANA PAG-IBIG NA.

Incidentally, my late mom's favorite of all the films of Nida Blanca. The confrontation scene between Nida & Gerald is one of the best moments in the film, poignant, hypnotic where the camera of Jeturian moves closely between them with Vangie Labalan on the background.

There's also Nora Aunor, Gina Alajar & Celeste Legaspi as Matet's three mothers in Mario O'Hara's Tatlong Ina, Isang Anak

Mona Lisa as Hilda Koronel's mother in Insiang.

Lolita Rodriguez giving birth at the climax of Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang.

Aya Medel looking for her children in Mario O'Hara's Sisa.

Charito Solis cringing before her husband in Kisapmata.

And for that matter, Charo Santos as daughter and mother in Kisapmata.

Hey, all kinds of mothers. ;D
