Are they the the same?  Read from NAS and NMT forums that WD gets broken easily.

Whats your experience?

Thanks,

Some NAS have particular firmware / models they needed, I use THecus nas and been using wd without problems for the past 3 years.

With all things we buy, cOmfort comes to us from reviews and amazon offers such good ranking. Id buy wdd over seagate depending on models we cOmpare. 5400 rpm wd is low cost and reliable, but f you wanted speed from your NAS, Seagate 7200 rpms are good

Jim,

For NMT applications, which is best suited 5400 or 7200RPM?

Thanks,

R

for NMT, you're good with 5400 rpm - less noise, and low power ... PC apps, better get the 7200 rpm, better performance in some studies translates to less power consumption

Seagate btw has stopped manufacturing the 5400 rpm green category HDD's, minimm would be 7200 rpm

+1 i was to run away with a $139 3TB at best buy and after a quick amazon search. binitawan ko na, kahit mas mahal, went for WDD.

I dont know what happened with Seagate they used to bring really good, reliable disks, the recent ones seems a lot more problematic, or maybe my use now is more on NMT (unlike before my needs are more for server grade boxes)

I bought the Seagate 3TB Go Flex at $139 and 3TB WD MyBook at $149 both in Best Buy last month, both have good build quality and parehong mabilis especially if you have USB 3.0.  I'm relying on warranties just in case magka-problema.  Btw, I also bought a 1TB WD My Passport for $109, same store ... naubos pera ko dahil katabi lang halos ng hotel namin yung Best Buy, but it's considerable savings compared to buying locally... unfortunately, mas mahal doon ang internal disks at this time, not really sure why

i have both, and been using WD for several years and haven't experienced any issues ... actually i only experienced bad sectors on my personal HDD a couple of times and both are Seagate drives ... i've also been working in IT for more than 20 years, and most issues that we had were on Seagate HDD's - sometimes a whole batch would experience issues in just a few months ... good thing about Seagate though is that they have local presence to handle warranty claims

I used to run enterprise grade drives in the 90s because desktop drives were largely unreliable and slow. HDD reliability had improved dramatically in the late 90s up until the late 00s. Then pricing turned cut-throat and SSDs became affordable (putting price pressure on the older technology). Makers had to cut workforce, warranties and parts costs while offering increasing performance. A lot of the makers became unprofitable, hence WD and Seagate were able to acquire the other makers (the consolidation trend). In the light of these big changes, we have to accept that some unintended lemons would likely make it out to the public, especially in the consumer space. Makers are pushing the boundaries of cost-effectiveness to deliver a balance between short-term profitability and long-term business survival.

Because of the recent consolidation, WD and Seagate are reaping the rewards of only having to compete with each other for the most part (they had gobbled up most of what was the competition). They are doing what most businesses would do in the situation... cashing in. I don't think they'd engage each other in a pricing war, as that would hurt both parties. Their recent price reductions were probably just a side-effect of price pressure from big OEMs and retailers.

That being said, I think product reliability and consistency will improve again (slowly) as we move forward. However, I think consumer-class product life would continue to be short (or even further shortened).

what we are referring here is the issue only for 3 TB storage sir, 1995 pa ako gumagamit ng 2 brand na ito. mula pa 4gb na hardisk hanggang sa 3tb na hardisk sa ngayon. pero sa dami ng problema ng 3tb na nabasa ko sa ibang forum. ang WD ang nanguguna sa listahan.

Agree ako dyan based on my personal experience . . .

Nag uwi kasi ng 1TB Go Flex si bayaw from the US, kaya lang me problem due to bad sectors, malamang daw nasira sa barko nung iniwanan nya one evening sa mess hall nila. Double checked using SeaTools and confirmed nga na defective dahil "Short Test" pa lang eh FAIL na agad.

Kaya last Saturday, nag process ako ng RMA sa website ng Seagate then pinadala ko agad sa Paranaque warehouse nila the next day, Sunday via LBC. Monday afternoon naka receive ako ng e-mail acknowledging receipt of the defective HDD. Then Tuesday morning, nag email sila na napadala na raw nila yung replacement unit at ma deliver daw ng Wednesday afternoon. I received a call from UPS on Wedhesday afternoon telling me that they will just deliver my package on Thursday kasi ginabi na daw sila dahil maraming deliver. True enough, nareceive ko yung package ng lunchtime of Thursday, me bonus pa dahil 1.5TB na sya instead of 1.0TB na pina RMA ko!

Very happy with this and hopefully magtagal yung pina dala nilang unit kahit refurbished, me nakadikit kasi na sticker na "Seagate Certified Repair" at wala sa original packaging. Nag online registration na lang ako to make sure it is still covered until the original warranty expiration . . .

czarsky
thanks!
