Floorstanders on a P20K budget
« on: Jan 18, 2010 at 06:53 PM »
hi guys,

i think my commander-in-chief has finally approved the replacement of our old HTIB.  right now, i'm leaning towards a denon 1910 avr and would like to match it with floorstanders.  previously i wanted to just get bookshelf speakers but i don't think i have space para patungan on my current entertainment cabinet so maybe FS would better fit my space layout.

my intended use is about 60% movies and 40% music.  i'm really a noob at this, but so far, i've auditioned the polk tsi 300 (thanks to SnS!) and it sounded good to me (although i felt there something lacking - di ko lang ma-describe).  what other options can you recommend to match with denon at the 20K budget?

TIA!

if you're not brand-conscious you may want to audition sir macdon's proac d2.5 clone. or the current highly-acclaimed coax series from diy_master anthony. those are claimed to beat some branded speakers in sq and many pdvders attest to the great sounds of anthony's speakers, myself included. for a budget of 20k i think you can get a pair of fs with matching center.

+1

Anthony's speakers sound great, at a fraction of the cost of well-known brands. You can send him a PM (diy_master) or text him (09214697091). When you go to audition his speakers, bring your P20k. Pag-uwi mo, tiyak, may speakers ka na! :)

+1 for sir Anthony's speakers.

Just upgraded to his coax line from his proac tritower clone, and all I can say is I'm VERY satisfied. For both movies and music, panalong panalo.

Ang masasabi ko na lang e buti wala pang credit card facilities si sir A, kundi e baon na ako sa utang. As it is, nagiipon pa ako para ma palitan ko yung surrounds and center ko ng coax speakers nya.

Since movies din lang ang habol mo, i audition mo na rin dun yung subwoofers. ;)

so far, votes are:

DIY - 3
TSI300 - 1

since space is a problem, i'm also considering getting bookshelves and just putting them on stands.  just not sure how much those speaker stands would cost.  from what i've read in some posts, generally, BS+stands = FS (for the same model category).  other suggestions?

You can check out the PSB Alpha T1. They're in the same range, and sound a bit warmer. They image well for the price, but don't like playing very loud.

The Wharfedale Diamond 9.6 is also an option. I think they do well with movies, but they need a strong grippy amp to deliver great music.

Stands actually consumes more real estate than floorstanders. My stands for my Usher 719, has a footprint of 15 x 15 inches, Most floorstanders consumes less space than these. Although these are large stands, smaller bookshelves will at least consume a space of 12x12 inches

the key is to audition all the speakers that you can. this is the only way you can compare and contrast how they all sound. by this you'll also know what your ears like.

audition first without asking the price  ;) parang blind test yan bro, listen to it and let your ears decide what a 20k speaker sounds.

check these post regarding floorstander and speaker comparison.

who knows you may get something lesser than your budget or add a little more to a sound that suit your ears.

goodluck!

and at the end of the day it's not how well the speakers were reviewed on the internet or what the survey says  ;) but it will be your ears that will hear it (and your eyes that will look at it).

thanks for pointing this out.  the other night, was measuring nga the floorspace for FS (based on the dimensions) and was suprised to know they were smaller than i had thought.

thanks for the links, bro!  yes, was auditioning nga the other weekend (the tsi300) and i was already impressed, although it was paired with an onkyo (wala naka demo na denon that time).  i was just looking for something  more, i think.  gusto ko kasi yung parang nasa harap ko lang yung vocals and instruments (was listening to jazz music that time).   for movies naman, it sounded ok with me.

next in line ko pala for audition are those paradigms (mas mahal nga lang)  :-\

parang mas ok kung audition mo yung mga speaker with your own receiver in that way makikita mo differences nila and yung performance nila sa receiver mo . ganyan balak ko hehe sana magawa ko
