Panasonic Adds New, Larger 3D TVs To Line Up

I hate Panasonic's 3d glasses as it always fall off. And what's up with the design having an opening on the side of the glasses.

Regarding PQ, I don't really go thru too much details so I rate this with Samsung. Though I noticed that Samsung's 3d without the glasses is still watchable compared to Panasonic.

Maybe some sort of exhaust sir to avoid moisture build up or allowance for people using prescription glasses.

If the 'double vision' image on the tv are too far apart makint it unwatchable w/o the glasses it means the depth setting is set too high. Depth level & convergence(pop-out effect) is adjustable in 3d vision, 3D Tvs should have this feature also for first time users & for people sensitive to 3D.

Samsung explains reasons behind its 3D TV warnings.

It seems that most of us, 98 per cent, can see 3D fine but there is a two per cent out there who doesn't see 3D properly. The reason? Well, it's all to do with the eyes.

"It depends on the distance of your two eyes. Most people have a 2.5-inch distance and they won't have a problem but small children who have a smaller distance may not see the 3D image properly."

So that's the reason for the warning against very small children viewing 3D for long periods but what about those who are pregnant? Well, it seems that reasoning is not so clear cut – it's more about emotions that anything physical.

"Watching a 3D movie is a lot more realistic that watching something in 2D, so people who have medical conditions or are pregnant may find the images slightly disorientating."

Warning! Warning!

Having warnings on home entertainment products is not new. If you were to read the warnings given out with videogames every time you were to play them, it would put you off picking up your controller for life and Samsung knows this but it says it has a responsibility, explaining: "This is a new generation of TV watching and as a manufacturer we have to be responsible."

3-D Glasses Incompatible? Wear Them Upside Down!

Samsung and Panasonic's 3-D glasses are compatible after all, but there's a catch.

That's right, the big 3-D glasses incompatibility problem has been solved. Well, in the case of Samsung and Panasonic anyway. The fix isn't the most elegant, and it'll make you look even sillier than you already did with the glasses on.

It's simple though, you've got to give it that. If you're using Samsung glasses on a Panasonic set, or vice versa, simply wear them upside down.

The interesting thing is that the manufacturers weren't taken by surprise on this one. Samsung R&D chief Simon Lee confirmed it, but said that it won't be necessary for long. "I think that it's likely," said Lee, "that the different manufacturers will come together, possibly as early as next year, to agree on a common standard for Active Shutter glasses"

Xbox 360 3D gaming revealed in LG 3D TV deal

Xbox 360 gaming is on the way but only in South Korea to start with. A press release unearthed on Flickr reveals that Microsoft has done a deal to market Xbox 360 3D games along with LG 3D TVs in Asia. With E3 just around the corner, could Xbox 360 3D gaming join Natal on the agenda?

Nestled quietly in LG’s Flickr photos is the above snap of two executives in their 3D glasses enjoying Xbox 360 3D gaming on an LG LED TV. The translated press release reveals the Microsoft and LG have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly market LG 3D TV and Xbox 360 3D games.

There’s no word of new Xbox 360 3D hardware which suggests that we might, just might, be seeing Xbox 360 3D gaming on the cards without needing to shell out for a brand new system. Free PS3 3D firmware upgrades have already arrived. Maybe Microsoft has a similar software solution to offer Xbox 360 3D gaming.

While Microsoft has done a deal with LG in South Korea we’d be very surprised if other 3D TVs like the Samsung 3D TV which went on sale in the UK recently aren’t able to get in on the act too. We’d expect to see more news on Xbox 360 3D gaming along with the much-anticipated Natal news at E3.

Fujitsu to Launch PC With 3D Camera and Display

Fujitsu will soon launch an all-in-one computer that can capture and display video images with the illusion of 3D.

The PC was on show on Tuesday at the company's Fujitsu Forum event in Tokyo, but few technical details of the machine were available. The company demonstrated the 3D capabilities of the computer, most of which was covered by a case to prevent too much being seen before its official launch.

The PC display is 3D-capable and requires the user to wear a pair of passive glasses to see an image with the perception of depth. Passive glasses are those with polarized lenses that appear dark or grey in color. They don't require batteries or flicker in sync with the screen like more complex models used with some 3D televisions.

In a demonstration on Tuesday one PC was showing a 3D video of golf while a second PC was showing a live image that was being captured by the computer. The video was captured by dual cameras mounted above the main display. Two cameras are needed to capture the depth that gives an image the illusion of being in three dimensions.

Fujitsu will supply software that allows two users with the same systems to be able to conduct 3D video chats via Windows Live Messenger.

In viewing tests of the two screens, the golf video looked better than that captured by the PC. The image from the camera appeared to show depth for close-by objects but those further away -- the demonstration was taking place in a large hall -- were blurred and confused the picture. The same problems might not appear if the PC was used at home, where room sizes are smaller and all objects are typically much closer to the camera.

It will be the flagship model in the company's upcoming refresh of its PC line-up in Japan. Further details were not immediately available.

Sharp develops 3D camera system for mobile phones

TOKYO — Sharp Corp. said Wednesday it had developed a three-dimensional camera system for mobile phones and other portable devices, with plans to begin production by the end of the year.

It will be the world's first 3D camera module for mobile devices capable of capturing high-definition video images, the consumer electronics giant said in a statement.

Different perspectives offered by each eye's line of sight enables the brain to process depth perception and therefore see images in three dimensions.

The system aims to exploit this by using two small lenses that can simultaneously capture separate images for the left and right eyes to create synchronised 3D pictures, said Miyuki Nakayama, a Sharp spokeswoman.

Sharp will start shipping samples in July and mass production will follow within a few months, Nakayama said, adding that further details, including prices, were not available.

Competition in 3D technology is intensifying among major electronics makers. Last month Sharp said it would begin selling liquid crystal televisions showing 3D images before this summer.

Indian company trains small army to meet 3D surge

India's Reliance MediaWorks, part of the Reliance ADA group, is training a small army of artists to meet the rise in demand for 3D films following the huge success of James Cameron's "Avatar" and other films.

Films like "Avatar," with its record-shattering $2.7 billion global box office, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans, have convinced studios to spend extra cash and add a third dimension to movies to boost box office earnings.

While film directors like Cameron debate whether converting 2D films to 3D, or filming directly in 3D, is the best way forward in the future, studios are using conversions as the most cost-effective way to meet audience demand.

Reliance, part of the conglomerate owned by Indian billionaire Anil Ambani, has begun training more than 2,700 artists to make 2D pictures into 3D in the next year or so.

Based in India, they aim to process between 10-15 films a year, each worth between $8-15 million to the company, targeting "blue chip" projects from major Hollywood studios.

"We are looking at focusing on A-list clients," Anil Arjun, CEO of Reliance MediaWorks, told Reuters. "And while scale is important, volume is not necessarily the key driver," he said.

Experts in the field warn that the laborious task of high-quality conversion is complex, but Reliance hopes to prove doubters wrong with its first film, likely this year.

When asked if he thought the 3D project a risky one at time of economic uncertainty, Arjun replied: "In 2009, probably the worst year for the world economy, the film industry grew substantially. And we also focus on next-generation applications like 2D to 3D and high definition."

Big 3D TV Shortages Tipped Vendors Forced To Airfreight

Consumer electronics retailers claim that they are expecting “big demand” and possible shortages for 3D- and IP-enabled TVs after three networks – Nine, Foxtel and SBS – announced live 3D TV broadcasts of leading sporting events during May and June.

They claim that some vendors, like Samsung, who have been heavily promoting 3D TVs, may be forced to airfreight stock just to keep up with demand.

According to Scott Browning, Marketing Director of JB Hi-Fi, the decision by TV stations to broadcast live 3D sporting events has caught many retailers unprepared with Browning still looking for answers as to "how the live 3D broadcast will be put to air".
He said "Stock levels are pretty thin, we know that Samsung has stock and that they are working very hard to keep the pipeline supplied however no one was expecting three channels to announce live sporting broadcasts."

Mark Leathan, Head of Marketing, for Consumer Electronics, at Samsung admits that demand has been greater than the company anticipated. He said "Consumer demand for this game-changing technology has been greater than anticipated. We are continually improving our stock situation and are confident we'll be equipped to meet the demand expected across May and June".

Browning said that TV vendors are looking at "bring stock in by any means they can" and that could involve air freighting stock.
A senior NSW, Harvey Norman franchisee said "3D TV stock is in short supply. We are set to heavily promote 3D via the State of Origin and there is concern about stock levels. We have been told by vendors that they will airfreight stock, however this could result in an additional $200 being added to a 3D TV".

Will Smith Commits To 'Men In Black 3D' Threequel; Sony Sets May 25, 2012 Release

EXCLUSIVE: Men in Black 3 is officially a go, and Columbia Pictures will set a May 25, 2012, release date for a sequel that director Barry Sonnenfeld will shoot in 3D. Will Smith has signed his deal to reunite with director Barry Sonnenfeld, and deals are now being negotiated with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. An announcement is imminent.

The project has been in the prep stage for some time, but didn't become real until Smith chose it over several "next film" candidates. His decision to put on the sunglasses and dark suit gives Sony a killer 2012: the studio previously set a July 3, 2012 release date for its Spider-Man relaunch, which also will be shot in 3D. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald return as MIB3 producers, and Steven Spielberg will be executive producer.

It has long been expected MIB3 would be next for Smith, who last starred in 2008’s Seven Pounds and then took the time to be a very hands on producer in the China-shot Karate Kid remake that stars his son, Jaden (which Columbia releases June 11). Smith then mulled several star vehicles that included City That Sailed, and I hear that he also contemplated Colossus, the scifi remake that Ron Howard wants to direct for Universal and Imagine.

While Smith pondered his choices, Columbia, Sonnenfeld and MIB3 producers Parkes and MacDonald positioned themselves to be ready. I’m told that Rick Baker has been designing and building the creatures, Bo Welch has been designing the sets, and David Koepp had been polishing a script by Etan Cohen that got this whole thing started. Cohen is back and polishing the shooting draft.

Panasonic, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment recently announced a new 3D partnership. The agreement between the three will bring two popular 3D movies on Blu-ray 3D to consumers that purchase a Panasonic VIERA VT25 Full HD 3D TV.

All consumers that purchase a Panasonic VIERA VT25 Full HD 3D Plasma TV between May 16th and July 10th will be entitled to receive 3D Blu-ray versions of Universal’s ‘Coraline’ and Fox’s ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’. Panasonic consumers will be able to claim their Blu-ray 3D titles through a mail-in coupon. For more details on the Blu-ray 3D promotional offer visit the Panasonic website here.

The Panasonic VIERA VT25 Series Plasma Full HD 3D TVs will be available to consumers in the United States in early May. The models released in May will be available in screen sizes of 50” and 54”. The 50” display will sell for $2,599.95 and the 54” will be available to consumers for $2,999.95.

Larger screened Panasonic 3D TV’s will be released in June. The 58” and 65” models will retail for $3,399.95 and $4,299.95.

Henry Hauser, the Vice President for the Panasonic Display Group announced that, “Panasonic is very proud of its long-standing relationships within the Hollywood community and our work together to lead the charge into the 3D era. Working with valued partners like Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment, we are not only bringing Full HD 3D Home Theater Systems to consumer homes now, but we’re also providing VIERA purchasers with critically acclaimed content so that they can begin enjoying the immersive world of Full HD 3D immediately.”

The Panasonic VIERA VT25 Series was awarded the “Best of Show” award at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.

TRUEVISION 3D SURGICAL INCORPORATES JVC GD-463D10U 3D MONITOR IN REAL-TIME 3D MICROSURGERY VISUALIZATION SYSTEM

WAYNE, NJ (May 4, 2010) – JVC Professional Products, division of JVC U.S.A., today announced that TrueVision 3D Surgical, a leader in digital 3D visualization systems for microsurgery based in Santa Barbara, Calif., is using the JVC GD-463D10U 46-inch 3D LCD HD monitor as part of its real-time 3D visualization platform. The system allows surgeons to view a surgical procedure on a high-resolution monitor instead of looking through a microscope.

“Basically, in surgery, visualization is everything,” explained Rob Reali, vice president of operations and marketing. “The better the surgeon can see, the better the surgery is probably going to go. TrueVision frees the surgeon from the bondage of being stuck on the eyepiece.”
Designed to record, edit, and playback 3D 1080p content, the TrueVision system seamlessly brings patient data and images from the exam room into the OR. It also provides additional benefits, including better ergonomics for the surgeon and improved operating room team synergy, because the whole team can see and follow the procedure. The company is also working on a guidance platform for microsurgery, which is currently in a clinical study.

TrueVision began offering its 3D visualization systems equipped with JVC GD-463D10U monitors about a year ago and has already sold dozens of systems to doctors, hospitals, and medical 3D theaters. Before integrating the JVC 3D monitor, TrueVision systems included a cumbersome dual-projector system, complete with a large, folding screen. “JVC’s 3D monitor is a game changer for TrueVision in the most positive sense,” said Reali.

Reali said a passive 3D system is mandatory for TrueVision, because active shutter glasses have too many potential problems. With its integrated Xpol polarizing filter, the JVC GD-463D10U monitor uses inexpensive polarized (passive) glasses to produce flicker-free 3D HD images.

The processing speed of the GD-463D10U is also very important. “Surgeons are operating in real time,” Reali explained. “Their hand movements have to match exactly. The JVC monitor has no noticeable delay [latency] from the real-time action at the surgical target to what you see on the screen.”

Image quality is also critical – surgeons will not use a monitor if it does not provide as good or better images than what they see through the eyepiece. Reali said surgeons using the TrueVision system appreciate the excellent color and contrast ratio of the GD-463D10U, which accurately displays the subtle shades that can mean the difference between cancerous and non-cancerous tissue.

“TrueVision’s image quality is so good, neurosurgeons use it to perform surgery directly from the screen,” added Forrest Fleming, CEO, TrueVision Systems. “That says a lot about JVC’s 3D display technology.”

Time Square Experiences Three Days in 3D

The world is abuzz about the incredible ability for entertainment technology to serve up how humans see and hear life in full three dimensions. Now, the producer of the world-renowned 3DX Festival in Singapore and 3D Screenings Asia in Hong Kong, in collaboration with The Hollywood Reporter, is readying to let people experience it all at a new Times Square mega-event.

3D is today’s hottest technology, coming at a time when consumers aren’t sure what could be the next level. The first annual “The 3D Experience” showcases 3D digital cinema, gaming, and TV into one hands-on mega-event where consumers and industry-insiders will see, hear and feel it all for themselves. The 3D Experience launches September 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2010 throughout Times Square.

The event, free to the public, includes screenings of 3D Hollywood blockbusters, including one of the largest, outdoor 3D screenings ever. The 3-day bonanza features a huge “3D showroom” lit-up with 3D technology and products for the home including video games, Blu-ray players, 3D HD TVs, all in a modern living-room like setting.

Sony Shows off 3D Gran Turismo 5 to the Public

Sony wants their new line of 3D Bravia televisions to make a splash in the market, and they're using 3D augmented PlayStation 3 games to make it happen. The electronics giant displayed their new TV line and several PlayStation 3 games this week in Tokyo's Roppongi neighborhood.

In addition to concerts and events featuring 3D footage being filmed live, Sony turned a local coffee shop into the "3D dot cafe," where they provided playable Gran Turismo 5 demo stations and displayed game and film trailers alongside sports footage. We had the chance to check out the cafe during it's from from May 21 to 25.

Gran Turismo 5 didn't look markedly better or worse in 3D when compared to its showing at TGS last year. However, it suffered from the "pop-up book look" that many 3D images do--the game looked as if it was composed of several 2D images layered on top of each other. Movies that are filmed in 2D and brought to 3D via CGI tend to suffer from the same problem (think Clash of the Titans or Alice in Wonderland.)

Though 3D images can be hard to watch for a long period of time, GT5 was relatively easy to look at. This is thanks in large part to the game not using any strong depth of field effects. Often times the 3D image in a game or movie is broken when the viewer tries to examine an object that the camera is not focused on. The brain tries to process the object, but the eyes can't bring it into focus, creating an odd effect that causes headaches or nausea in some. All objects in GT5, regardless of location, are rendered without any post-processing blur, so no matter where we looked on the screen, we could focus easily.

First PS3 3D content arrives next week

Pain, the human catapulting game on PlayStation Network, is going stereoscopic 3D. Sony has a Pain pack that adds 3DTV support and two challenges created specifically for 3DTVs.

Alien Toss 3D is one of the new challenges in the Pain 3D pack and has players fling a stereotypical Martian. Ice Breaker 3D, the other 3D addition, lets players shoot crates at an ice castle. Sony Korea says this add-on will also make other modes in Pain 3DTV compatible, but didn’t specify which ones.

We’ll have to wait until June 3rd to find out. That’s when the Pain 3D pack goes live in Asia.

Samsung vs. LG spark at World IT Show 2010 with 3D

3D technology is one of the hottest products at 'World IT Show 2010,' the greatest IT exhibition event in Korea. The competition between Samsung and LG around 3D display will be the main highlight of the event.

In COEX, Seoul, where World IT Show 2010 is held, many people drop by to see 3D displays created by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

Samsung's display, named '3D Cube,' is a kind of tower that consists of 36 televisions. These are 55-inch full 3D LED TVs from Samsung, and visitors can experience full 3D images. In addition, Samsung demonstrates other 3D products, such as a 3D Blu-ray player and 3D home theater.

While Samsung catches visitors' attention with 3D Cube, LG has the largest 3D TV. The size of this full LED 3D TV measures 72 inches, and many people form a line to watch it with glasses. Also, LG offers the opportunity to take 3D pictures with the popular LG Twins baseball player mannequins.

It is not only Samsung and LG that are a part of the exhibition but many others vendors are also excited to display their new products incorporating 3D technology.

3DIS is one such vendor that exhibited a 3D LCD monitor that doesn't require users to wear special glasses. The 3DIS monitor uses high-precision optical 3D LCD technology to mimic the effect of 3D without requiring users to wear any kind of special glasses.

I dont think so, but if you can wait some more Aiptek & Sony are going to release their 3d cameras soon. They're probably gona be a lot cheaper than the W1 tho' there's no denying the Fujifilm is a fine brand.

Aiptek claims that its 3D i2 is the world's first pocket-size 3D HD-DV to integrate 2D and 3D camcorder technologies.

The device is equipped with two lenses for filming both high quality 2D and 3D images. The camcorder provides 5-megapixels CMOS image sensors with selectable high definition 2D and stereoscopic 3D video recording at a resolution of HD 720p, according to the vendor.

The 2.4-inch 3D panel enables viewing 3D live without the need for eyewear and also features a playback function that is switchable from 2D to 3D. The new 3D camcorder, whichis being exhibited at Computex 2010, comes at a street price starting at US$199, the vendor said.

Sony Alpha series cameras to start snapping in 3D

Sony’s new Alpha series of compact cameras is looking to change that however as the snappers with interchangeable lenses work alongside 3D image processing software.

Whereas full 3D cameras and camcorders require two lenses, Sony’s Alpha series single lens will work in conjunction with Nvida’s 3D Vision Photo Viewer to add a post-processed third dimension to your usual holiday snaps.

It could well be that 3D photography is about to receive the same degree of attention as its moving image sibling as Sony’s Alpha series adds to an already expanding market of 3D snappers. Just days ago, Sharp announced that it has developed a 3D camera from mobile phones.

3D photography is being adopted not just by manufacturers but by professional photographers and publications, a trend demonstrated by one of the world’s most famous publications, Playboy magazine, which is adopting 3D for the centrefold of this months magazine.

If Sony has its way and its relationship with Nvida grows to encompass all Sony cameras, it might not be too long before it is the norm to carry a 3D compact capable of creating images more lifelike than ever before.

Sony: Retrofitting PS3 Games with 3D Challenging

In the latest edition of Official PlayStation Magazine, Sony senior development manager Simon Benson said that the company plans to "retrofit" more existing games with stereoscopic 3D. However, converting the titles to the new format is much more difficult than developing 3D games from scratch.

"One of the big issues is that all of the game assets were designed to work with only one HD output," he said. "Being able to render them twice to make a 3D output can be a challenge."

Benson also pointed out that the game interfaces are often designed to only work in 2D. "The process used [to] covert the games varies greatly... so there isn't really a 'one size fits all' solution." This could be problematic, as the 3D effect could be ruined by a stubborn map overlay or health bar getting in the way.

The company recently announced that the stereoscopic 3D is still on track for Japanese PlayStation 3 consoles on June 10. Sony will also launch 3D versions of Pain, WipEout HD and Super Stardust HD at the same time--gamers who already own the latter two PSN titles will receive a free patch that updates the game(s) to the new 3D format.

Sony said that the firmware update will coincide with the release of its new line of 3D Bravia HDTVs. The company will launch a promotional campaign that will reward consumers with all three games and a 3D demo for Motorstorm 2 for free when purchasing a 3D Bravia HDTV.

I wonder if our PS3 (after the firmware 3D update) will be compatible with Samsung or Panasonic 3D TV.

Sony's 3D glass design is quite cool relative to that of Panasonic...and it comes in blue and pink for children's sizes.

Sony started selling their 1st 3D LCD yesterday in Tokyo.  Model is LX900 comes with 2 sets of 3D glasses and built in transmitter.  Higher end HX models will follow in July with optional 3D accessories.

I felt the brightness of the LCD image is an inherent advantage for 3D because of the dark glasses.  Sony has just upped the ante.

Oh yes the Sony glasses felt lighter.  I just noted in Sony's brochure that optimum horizontal viewing angle is only 120 degrees.  I havent checked that figure on the Panasonic yet.

BTW, Sony 3D Bravias start from 40V.   ;)

3d vision's emitter is 120 degrees as well. I think thats not much of a hassle not unless you watch very close from the TV and much from the side w/c is not enjoyable to experience 3D.

Forget motion – 3D to dominate E3

Natal and Move may be highly anticipated, but publishers have told MCV they are gambling on 3D to wow the world at this month’s E3.

Nintendo will reveal its 3D handheld at the LA-based event, Sony will showcase a vast line-up of 3D titles including Gran Turismo 5, while MCV expects at least three major publishers to lift the lid on blockbuster 3D projects.

Leading games firms say 3D will be used in the most advanced gaming software, rather than the lower-end casual projects currently being lined-up for Natal and Move – but 3D titles are still expected to have a mass-market reach.

“What we are trying to do in the 3D space is part of a cross-Sony initiative,” said SCEE CEO and president Andrew House. “We’ve realised, particularly for a younger audience, that games can be an easier way for people to engage with 3D than movies.

“This will be on the cutting edge of gaming for the next year or two. If Avatar taught us one thing in an age of globalisation, it’s that when consumers embrace something it moves quickly. This is definitely a wave of the future and one that we intend to ride.”
