Cross-posting, as this might be the more appropriate thread:

Newbie question - is there a recommended way to connect a dedicated CD player to a receiver? 3 options are available - optical, coaxial and the red/white (RCA?) connection.

I am now using a coax cable.  Is the RCA the better option? If so,  we're not talking about the free/cheap ones which come with the player, right?

If you connect the cdp using coax or optical, you will be using your receivers dac. If you connect the cdp via analog rca outs, then you are using the cdp's built in dac. The connection will depend on which sounds better for you.. You can connect both and then switch inputs from the receiver and from there you can compare which one sounds better...

Hi Sir,

There is no general rule as to how you would want to connect your CD player to your reciever.
People would often try all options, and you should too, then listen for best sound that suits your taste then stick with it.

As for the cable, that would depend on you and budget. Do you believe in cables that do change the sound?
If you do, then get the best cable you can buy and you should be happy.

But becareful when it comes to branded and pricy cables, its not the brand or the type of connection that you use, its the synergy of you whole system. and how you or your ears react to the quality of sound being produced by your system.

^thanks for the clarification @Courage and @Zitr0.

I've had the coax cable since circa 2002 or so as my previous receiver, Onkyo 494, had no HDMI input.

Might give me an excuse to try out Cal's ICs :)

But theoretically, the DAC of the CD player should be better, right, since it is more "specialized" for music? I'm asking because I just tried one IC and my CD player (NAD C516BEE) now sounds worse than my Pioneer DVD player (volume is lower, voice seems puny instead of full). Ngek. Parang it sounded better with the coax.

I have a few more ICs to try, hope I find one which suits, else, I'm going back to the coax.

IMHO, it doesn't necessarily follow. Depends really on the DACs of your CDP and DVD-P...maybe the equipment you have and the cable/s does not match thus the seemingly bad sound as what you've posted here

Found this post at AudiogoN forums (http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?ddgtl&1178938438):

Quote
Option 1: Use Digital Output from CD Player
The outputs the digital signal to the A/V Receiver which processes the signal and then uses it's DAC to convert to analogue. A total of one conversion between Analog and Digital

Option 2: Use Analogue Output from CD Player
The CD player uses it's DAC to convert to analogue. The A/V receiver then uses its ADC to convert the input back to digital, processes the digital signal (volume, dolby or any other effects), runs it through it's DAC and outputs an analogue signal to the speakers. A total of three conversions between Analog and Digital.

Consequently, with an A/V receiver, it usually doesn't matter what quality of DAC you have in your CD player since there you are almost always stuck using the DAC in the A/V receiver. You might as well minimize the conversions and just feed the digital signal directly to the A/V receiver.

The exception to this is where the A/V receiver has a pure direct (or equivalent) mode; this mode will usually handle 2 channel analog signals as analog signals and you should not have the extra conversions so you may be better off with the CD players DAC.
(emphasis mine)

Kind of makes sense to me, though I'm no expert.

My receiver has a "direct" mode, so maybe I will try analog output and then pure direct on the receiver.

Thoughts?

Exactly! That is, if you prefer the raw sound of your CD player. Others kasi, prefer the "processed"  sound, meaning they let their receiver DSP do the processing (EQing, time alignment, volume matching). But expect some latency issues so try not to use it for karaoke.

Just an update to my problem above - I tried a 2nd type of IC tonight and while I was removing the first one and installing the 2nd, I realized that I caused the problem. In the receiver side, I inadvertently connected the white to the red, and the red to the white connectors. Mea culpa. My apologies to the believers of analog connections for casting aspersions on its sound quality. All is well with the sound of my CD player now  ;D

Oh, and I tried the analog connection + direct mode (in AV receiver). Very nice.

^thanks! You're right, the fun is in the tweaking.

A bit OT - I'm still trying to figure out how to "switch inputs" from the receiver, if I connect both a coax and the analog line output. I'm guessing I will rename 2 unused inputs, say CBL/SAT and DVD, as NAD1 (specify coax) and NAD2 (auto). Tama ba?

You will need to assign which inputs will be used by Coax and analog, if your receiver has the function to rename then yes you are right..
