Making a CDP player into an external DAC
« on: Jul 13, 2010 at 06:05 AM »
I have a Sony CDP-950 which can no longer read CDs properly. I have done my best to clean
the lens and adjust the focus and tracking pots but with no success. As I do not want to
buy a new lens assembly (KSS-210A) or throw the CDP away is there any simple way to wire
it so that it now works as a DAC?

My question is would a circuit modification such that input digital data (from the external
CD transport) to the Sony CXD1125 (Digital Signal Processor) pin 15 (DATA) work as shown
below?

Normally, DATA comes from the CXA1182 (FOCUS/TRACKING/SLED/CLV SERVO, VCO) and the MSM6408-26SS (SYSTEM CONTROL) then goes to the CXD1125.

Please advise.

I've tried it this AM. The approach doesn't work  :(. Previously, I've also tried connecting input digital data to pin 78 (DATA) - besides it not working, it also screwed up the CD transport controls of the CDP-950  :(  :(  :(.

Using a Digital Audio Receiver eg CS8412, CS8414 etc is my very last option. I do not want to resort to this.

Any ideas guys?

Could it be that I just need a transceiver eg SN75179?

napakagandang idea nito sir :-)
naisip ko rin ito para sa Sony 555ESJ ko. Kaso I'm not technical on amps.
If only cd players have line in features, tipong mga integrated amps na puwedeng gawing pre or power amp.

Medyo on hold itong experiment kong ito.

Hello Sirs,

This idea is a variant of the CDP as DAC method.
How about a DAT recorder as DAC?

Some discussion here:

Has anybody tried this?  How does a Sony ES line DAT recorder, compare with ES line CDPs?

thanks.
