newbie questions on buying a new projector
« on: Oct 31, 2010 at 06:44 PM »
ive been thinking for awhile kung magupgrade ako ng tv or get a projector instead since mas mura ang projector tapos mas malaki pa ung screen. me mga questions lang ako i hope someone would be kind enough to answer them. currently im using a 32" panasonic le8, planning to keep this for cable tv watching, ung projector strictly for movies lang (gusto ko sana ung motorized pj screen para matakpan niya ung lcd tv pag ung projector ang gagamitin) TIA ;D

here are my questions: room is approximately 20-25 square meters

hindi ba malabo ang projector considering mas malaki ang screen niya? ive watched from a 50" plasma and so far contented naman ako even though 720p lang resolution niya

how will i know kung ano dapat ang distance ng pj sa screen?

normally ilan hours ba ang tinatagal ng projector lamp? siguro if ever maximum of 2hrs per day lang magagamit ung projector at most or around 14hrs per week

salamat in advance, ill post other questions pero ito muna for now TIA  :D

I used to have a 720p Optoma HD70 before and have compared it to 1080p PJ's.
To my eyes, my 720p PJ was more than adequate.

However, if my information is right. Entry-level 1080p PJ's cost only $999 nalang (not far from high end 720p PJ's)
So you might as well go for a 1080p PJ.

Yes, if you want the best picture quality possible from the PJ a dark room is a must.
No matter how bright your PJ is light will wash out the image starting with blacks.

how will i know kung ano dapat ang distance ng pj sa screen?

You can try looking for a theater calculator in the net.

You can place the PJ on a table if you want.
But mounting the PJ on the ceiling is the best way to go. It will give you more room to move around and keep it out of reach of greasy hand children
.

normally ilan hours ba ang tinatagal ng projector lamp? siguro if ever maximum of 2hrs per day lang magagamit ung projector at most or around 14hrs per week

Most PJ lamps have a approximate 3000 hours on it

The price gap between 1080p & 720p PJ's is pretty small this days so if you can stretch your budget might as well go for a 1080p PJ already.

What is you budget BTW?

I do not know where to buy motorized screens.
Why not DIY a screen yourself. You'll save thousands and get a sense of fulfillment pa.  ;)

meron sa mga av stores. pag yung sabre brand, i think its 15k yung motorized. if you by the imported brands, then its going to be more expensive.

15k for a motorized screen seem steep. siguro ill stick to DIY screen. meron bang diy na motorized?
and how would you know ano ang size ng screen ang dapat ilagay?

here are my questions: room is approximately 20-25 square meters

hindi ba malabo ang projector considering mas malaki ang screen niya? ive watched from a 50" plasma and so far contented naman ako even though 720p lang resolution niya; Hindi naman malabo ang PJ BUT its not as vivid as your flat screens. Pj is more on the cinema like picture but better(compared to our local cinemas) :P.  Depende sa resolution and lumens ng pj for you to get good and better picture quality.

will a 720p projector suffice? since nakuntento naman ako sa 720p sa 50" plasma (Ive never watched at 1080p so di ko masabi kung ano difference nito sa 720p);Pwede na 720p esp if watching mkv files BUT if I were you ill try to get the 1080p ones esp the LCD types.Yung 1080p future proof ka na ika nga. good models to consider are epson 8100 and panasonic ae4000 :D Kung dlp naman go for models na 2 chip and above para minimized na yung rainbow effect although some people hard notices it even sa single chip like me ;D

Totally dark rooms is suggested lang if mababa yung lumens ng Pj mo, but kung hindi naman pwede ka naman mag lagay ng ala-nite lamps sa back portion of your room for it not to affect the picture quality. But if you can get the 2500 and up lumens then pwede kahit may flourescent light na :D And besides you will not be watching in total darkness kasi your watching nga unless its a blank black screen ;D

how will i know kung ano dapat ang distance ng pj sa screen? For a 100" screen suggested viewing distance is 13' away but it will depend on your preference pa din. Some likes it closer to the screen while most people likes it farther pa than recommended.

As for table mount hindi yung pj and delikado but yung kids, since pjs gives off hot air ;) baka mapaso kids.

normally ilan hours ba ang tinatagal ng projector lamp? siguro if ever maximum of 2hrs per day lang magagamit ung projector at most or around 14hrs per week; Mostly its 3000hrs but you're lucky just to get half of it. And based sa experience and readings, mas gusto ng pj yung long usage times rather than tipid on-off watching. So i would suggest that when you get your pj e enjoy it to the max para mas sulit :D

salamat in advance, ill post other questions pero ito muna for now TIA  :D

From me ;D 2500 for a diy screen is a bit too much unless its a real screen material that you just DIY mounted on a flat board. But if its just the regular black out cloths then you're better off with a wall painted with flat white paint mas cheaper pa with same effect  or better pa nga minsan. ;D And besides if you can afford a pj then why not complete it with a decent screen ;)

ive never tried watching a movie on a projector. malaki ba difference as compared to watching it on a 50" 720p plasma? sa 50" kasi malinaw pa rin ang movie and sharp ung images, ganun din kaya sa projector?

It really depends on what type of projector you are going to buy.
Generally in my experience, projectors give more "film-like" picture than the Vivid, dynamic picture of a flat screen.

amigo, hope i could help you further...

first, ito ang link for reference as to what brand and distance ang kailangan mo.

second, your area is a good candidate for a PJ.

SIZE DOES MATTER!

32" with your area is small. even 42". sinubukan ko ang 32", 42" and 60" with our PJ pero iba talaga ang malaki. IBA!  :D my first DIY screen was only 60" and satisfied na kami since nasanay na kami sa 21" for more than a decade. PERO ng pinahiram ako ng 90" binayaran ko na agad ang screen!  :D

720p (para sa akin) ay sapat na. but if you have extra then go for the 1080p.

btw, ours is a panasonic ax200.

should I say, WELCOME to the PJ Club?  ;)

don't get bothered by those specs. enjoy mo na lang ang wide screen  ;D ;D same lang naman siguro tayong concern sa power consumption. in fact, isa din yan sa main concern ko pero tingnan mo ako naka PJ na. Go na sa PJ!  ;)

basta ang alam ko kung kelan maliwanag ang palabas mas namamaximize ang gamit sa kuryente. kaya mas maganda kung madilim talaga ang room para makatipid ka rin sa kuryente dahil no need para dagdagan ang brightness ng screen to compensate your room's light condition. kaya ako tinapalan ko lahat ng bintana with a removable frame. yun nga lang laging may flaslight katabi ng mga remotes hehe.  ;)

SOBRANG LAKING DIFFERENCE. You can quote me.

I would bother much on electrical consumption kasi i would presume hindi mo naman palaging gagamitin ang PJ mo. Re lighting, of course, maski LCD or Plasma din, masmaganda manuod kapag madilim. Pero dapat talaga sa PJ madilim. If you want na may kaunting light, you should get a higher contrast ratio. Then gray screen.

Layo mo kasi.

viewing distance is around 11-12 feet. would you still recommend getting a projector sir?

YES.1-2 feet diff is ok lang. Pero trust me, you wouldn't do that when your PJ arrives.

So kailan ka papasyal? ;)

our sweet spot is about 10 ft lang and we're using a 90 incher. noon ayokong maniwala sa iba na ok lang kahit malapit kasi maduduling at mapapagod ang mga mata namin BUT mali ako. di mo naman kailangang bubusisiin ang bawat lumalabas sa screen eh. ang mahalaga match ang screen sa sound. may standard "ideal" proportion na nababasa tayo sa net and other reference pero iba ang personal experience. good thing about having a PJ is its flexibility. mas mura pa!  ;)

Either would do.

Optoma is my preferd brand when it comes to PJ's, bang for the buck IMO.

Try looking up for the Optoma HD71 also.
