Components deteriorate over time, and values drift off-spec as time goes by. The amplifier might still work, but it may no longer perform as good as new.

Sonic signatures (or house sounds) also change, so an 80s Krell might not sound like a present Krell.

Aside from these, modern protection circuitries are quite a bit more advanced than what is present in amps from over a decade ago.

then there is a difference still... thanks for clearing that up.

based on my very limited experience, kapag nilakasan mo ang volume at nagiging maingay, parang mid range na lang ang lumalakas, masakit na sa tenga, kulang ka na sa amp power (this is assuming you do not have a very reflective room). Ang isang gamot dito is to use a sub when listening to stereo music, pero sa aking opinyon, medyo hindi kasing pulido ang tunog compared to pure 2-channel listening.

when i first played my 805's, nagtaka ako kung bakit mahina ang tunog, bale ikinabit ko lang sya from where the 705's were connected (speaker lang ang nagbago at same volume level from the preamp). turns out that the 805's are less efficient than the 705's. so ang tendency is to crank it up... kung kulang ang amp power, baka di maganda ang kalabasan ng tunog.

i tried to compare the SQ of the 805's subjectively with the rb1090 vs the rmb1095. Ang munti kong obserbasyon ay halos pareho lang ang tunog nila when you drive them softly, pero pag pinatugtog mo na ng tipong aawayin na ako ng kapitbahay, parang may mga nawawalang detalye ang 1095, sabay nilalagnat na sya compared to the bigger 1090. pag vocals lang walang kaso, pero pag cobain, knopfler, metallica o mozart(yung matindi ang dynamics), nagkakaroon na ng difference at high volume levels.

so in your view depende rin siya as to how loud you play.. sabi nga din ng iba given with all the factors that affect how your system will sound... i guess it makes absolute sense. i will focus on room acoustics for now as per suggestion narin of everyone. thanks bro. mgkanu pla bili mo dyan sa 1090 at 1095?

I guess for most, as long as you're being happier, it's ok to be poorer... Grin

my sentiments exactly. :)

it's your money. if you can hear a 1% - 5% drift in performance because of old componentry, go ahead.  But between a brand new P100T Rotel and a used 10-year old P40T Aragon power amp of similar power rating, I have a clear choice for value for my money.  I'm not talking about just a few thousands of pesos saved.  I'm talking about tens of thousands.

I guess it also depends if you know how to spot a well-maintained used power amp.

But if you don't, then just buy new things.

That statement about being poorer to be happier was meant in zest.  In fact, if you read on,  I was tempting people to use power amps and just use their receivers as pre amps.

so what does newer amps offer that the old amps don't aside from their new physical form ?

Tingin ko mostly inflation (pero ganon din yata ang level of pricing nung bago pa ang mga vintage?).  Sa mga nabisita kong used/vintage Hi-Fi shops and modern Hi-Fi demo booths in Tokyo, wala akong marinig na pagkakaiba - but then I didnt bring any oscilloscope with me - HH alarm switch lang ng wallet.    ;D

i get your point sir ..i was just asking about the difference regardless if its small or not instead of getting a yes or no answer  :)  and since im not really familiar with power amps. for all i know they're just there for power. until i read comments and post from people here and there.

Yamaha DSP-AX1 as power amp combined with an Onkyo 608 class AVR for pre-out.

Will this work NICELY WELL?

Actually, I simply want to have HD audio decoding but I can't part ways with the AX1, thus thinking perhaps I can do a piggyback.

Thanks for any advise!

Sir amdxp,

Just so you may have a well rounded info, you may like to contact one of our members - obsi.
He recently connected a 5ch poweramp to his Harman Kardon avr just last weekend.
You may like to get his impressions or ask questions.

Hope this helps! :)

better invest in room acoustics...

put a voltmeter acrros the speaker leads of your mains.. you'll be amazed how little "watts" are you using

Is this a proper method of computing your amplifier's load? Iba ata sir ang volts ng speaker vs load ng amplifier.

Ako kasi, i use an ampmeter sa isang pole ng power cord ng amplifier.

If you're content w/ the SQ of your present AVR, forget about adding a power amp it would just add cost (electricity consumption & buy'n an additional 5pcs of inteconnects) & also it would just complicate you're system ;D ;D ;D

adding power to existing AVR setup for HT. the 2 front amps in your receiver will become idle, unless you get another set of speakers...  :)

getting extra amp for fronts it should be twice or more the power of your AVR, otherwise you won't hear any difference. also you should get 3 channels to balance the 3 important speaker in the setup...  :)

if not for curiousity, instead of adding a power amp, just upgrade your avr with sufficient power to drive your speakers.  ;)

Have a couple of what may be considered relatively high powered receivers, which tested to have even more power than my power amps. But somehow the power amps brought something to the table which I considered more desireable than simply power, sound charcteristic and synergy. I guess different components have different sonic signatures, and if are luckily paired together would create a magical synergy that is greater than their individual performances paired with other components. IMHO, YMMV, yada yada yada. Hope this helps.

yes, every component of different model/power has it's own sonic signature. compared it before with an integrated amp 90w/c and B&K power amp 60w/c, B&K came out with audio quality which the intg. amp failed to offer. ;D

separates system has a lot of flexibility in pairing components...  :D
