This App Turns the iPad into a 3D Display That Doesn’t Need Glasses

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBQQEcfkHoE&feature=player_embedded

Two university software developers have cooked up a pretty clever use of the iPad 2's new front-facing camera: tracking your face to create the illusion of depth. The effect is so wicked that it actually tricks the brain into thinking there's a real threedimensional world behind a glass.

For games and other visually-rich apps, being able to "look into" your iPad could be terrific. And it's seemed like Apple is thinking the same thing, given their patent for similar tech a couple years back.

Sony Vegas Pro 10.0d Will Offer Blu-ray 3D Authoring Capabilities

Sony Vegas Pro 10 was the first professional and affordable NLE video editor to feature official stereoscopic 3D support in the video editing workflow and not to add it trough some workarounds or additional plugins. But Sony is further improving the stereo 3D capabilities of their software and the latest version 10.0d that is expected later this month will bring more interesting new features. Not all of course are related to stereoscopic 3D support, but lets take a look at the ones that are:

3D MVC and MPO File Format Support – Additional native support for emerging MVC and MPO 3D file formats provides continued functionality with cutting edge camera and media technology (Sony cameras that support these formats include: TD10, NX3D1, TD300, and the Alpha and NEX series).

3D Blu-ray Disc Timeline Burning – New burning capability allows users to burn full HD 3D Blu-ray Discs onto BD-R/BD-RE media, providing editors with a complete ingest, edit and delivery option for 3D media.

Sony and JVC Unveil Pro 3D Camcorders at NAB

Sony and JVC decided to push further into the 3D market this week, as both company’s unveiled professional 3D camcorders at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. Sony’s compact 3D model, called the HXR-NX3D1U, looks eerily similar to the company’s consumer 3D camcorder—the Handycam HDR-TD10. The same should definitely be said about JVC’s GY-HMZ1U professional 3D cam as well. It has nearly the same body design and layout as the recently-reviewed (by us!) GS-TD1.

JVC GY-HMZ1U 3D camcorder

In fact, looking at the specs of the GY-HMZ1U, we only noticed three significant differences between it and the GS-TD10 3D camcorder that JVC launched earlier this year: the GY-HMZ1U comes with dual XLR mic inputs, it offers a 24p frame rate (in addition to 60i), and it comes with 80GB of internal memory (as opposed to 64GB on the TD1). JVC claims the GY-HMZ1U is also loaded with a few more pro features, like zebra pattern, that were not present on the GS-TD1. Most importantly, of course, the GY-HMZ1U is expected to retail this Autumn for $2,500—a price that’s nearly $800 more than the current MSRP of the GS-TD1. Are the features we listed above worth that much? We don’t think so.

How 3D Is Fueling the International Box Office

Titles like "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Pirates 4" aim to capitalize on the popularity of the technology, which helped international grosses climb 30% over the past five years.

. . . And, just weeks ago, Rio picked up the baton. The South American-set animated tale has to date nearly tripled its domestic take of $115.2 million in international markets where it has collected more than $292.3 million.

Nokia to launch dual-screen 3D tablet next year?

With it's first batch of Windows 7 phones being put together as we write, it appears that Nokia could also be set to enter the tablet market with a device not completely dissimilar to the concept of Nintendo's 3Ds.

A patent filed by the Finish phone giant in late April has been unearthed showing a dual screen device with 3D capabilities and eye level tracking camera which, in technical terms, is a device with "auto stereoscopic rendering and display apparatus".

Start Saving for Samsung's $13K, 75-Inch 3D HDTV

The Samsung D9500 is a 75-inch, LED-backlit 3D LCD TV. It goes on pre-sale in Korea later this month, but Engadget reports that it'll hit U.S. shores in August for a mere $13,000.

So it's not exactly a budget model. On the bright side, the D9500 comes with all the trimmings, including Smart TV apps, Samsung Hub, a Web browser, four pairs of active shutter glasses, and a dual-sided remote with traditional controls on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other. Refresh rate comes in at 240 Hz.

Huge Growth in Global 3D HDTV Shipments Predicted for 2011

According to a resent research made by IHS iSuppli’s analysts the global 3D HDTV shipments for this year will grow by a factor of 5.5 for 2011 from the 4.2 million units sold last year and that is a huge increase. Thanks to the prices of 3D HDTVs becoming more attractive to customers and more 3D content becoming available, the worldwide shipments predicted by IHS iSupply for 2011 is about 23.4 million units. According to the research the growth will continue in 2012 when global shipments are expected to reach 54.2 million units, in 2014 they will breach 100-million and then hit 159.2 million in 2015.

Panasonic Europe boss backs 3D TV to take off in 2011

Laurent Abadie said the technology will appeal to the mass market this year.
Panasonic Europe's chairman and chief executive has predicted 2011 will be the year that 3D TV lives up to its potential and gains truly mass-market appeal.

Laurent Abadie noted an increasing amount of 3D content has become available over the past 12 months and new broadcast channels have been launched, paving the way for a surge in take-up of the innovation.

"It is clear that 2011 is the year this revolutionary technology will become mainstream," he commented.

The 1080p 3D-capable Projectors and Gaming in Stereo 3D Mode

There are a lot of people that expect this year to finally see 1080p 3D-capable projectors on the market with more affordable prices, thinking about upgrading their current 720p 3D projectors or directly going for such a solution with gaming in stereo 3D mode as one of the main things to do on a big screen. Currently one of the most affordable 1080p 3D projector is Sharp XV-Z17000 available for about 3-4K USD, but even this is considered high for more mainstream users not looking to build a home movie theater, but instead planning to use the projector for gaming. Especially considering that there are some mainstream 3D-capable 720p projectors such as the Acer H5360 available for just about $600 USD, so paying 2-3 times that price for a projector supporting 3D and 1080p resolutions sounds reasonable, but more not so much.

Sony's new 3D VPL-HW30ES projector is official for the US too, costs $3,699

We've finally received the official US information (press release after the break) about Sony's latest addition to its line of SXRD projectors, the VPL-HW30ES. The biggest news here is the price, and this one is rocking a $3,699 MSRP. Slipping under the $3,000 barrier really would have made our eyes pop, but as it stands it's still an impressive array of tech for the dollar. Otherwise the details remain the same as we'd heard yesterday, although the press release acknowledges that it will be available in a bundle with two pairs of 3D glasses and the IR sync transmitter as the VPL-HW30AES. Those accessories will otherwise run $129 for the glasses and $79 for the IR transmitter, no word on a bundle price.

Apple iPad 3 Prototype Platform with 3D Display

Its clear that the next iteration of the iPad is going to have an upgraded display there have been rumors that the iPad 3 will have a brighter, higher-resolution Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode AMOLED display screen or that is its going to sport a 3D display. The inclusion of a 3D display makes perfect sense for why Apple has been pushing the high resolution and DPI, since once you got 3D you split the resolution in half, one for each eye. Which of course makes their next iteration being 3D realistic and a display manufacturer proving the concept makes it even more of a reality. That is of course technically speaking. Whether or not Apple decides to produce a 3D iPad will remain a mystery for a few more months.

Panasonic’s First Full HD 3D Projector, PT-AE7000U

Panasonic has introduced their first 3D projector, the PT-AE7000U and judging from an impressive list of specs and initial reports, 3D home theater buffs will soon have, possibly, the most economical choice in the 3D projector pool.

Panasonic claims the AE7000U to be the world’s first 1080p 3D projector based on transmissive LCD panels driven at 480Hz (in 3D mode, each eye is shown 240Hz) using active-shutter glasses with an integrated IR transmitter.  According to reports a higher driving frequency contributes to a significant reduction in crosstalk, a design goal for the AE7000U. Other goals were to increase the brightness and contrast using a higher-power, red-rich lamp; new LCD panels with greater aperture ratio and improved dynamic iris. The proof is in the pudding as they say with 2,000 lumens and a 300,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.  Another impressive tid-bit is the 2x zoom can cast a 120-inch diagonal image from as close as 3.6 meters (about 11 feet) to 7 meters (24 feet) from the screen.

The Game Gears of War 3 Will Feature Stereoscopic 3D Support

Gears of War 3 is an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 console, and it will feature stereo 3D support natively built into the game engine, because the game console from Microsoft still does not have support for the HDMI 1.4 frame packaging standard. The developer Epic Games has apparently planned to have Side by Side stereoscopic 3D output rendered from the game engine, so if you have a 3D HDTV you would be able to play the game in S3D mode. Of course the output will be in 720p resolution with both left and right eye frames squashed inside a single frame, meaning a little loss of detail as compared to playing in stereo 3D mode in true 720p resolution per eye (still not possible on the Xbox 360). The not so good thing about the game is that it was not started with the idea of being a stereo 3D title right from the start, instead the stereo 3D support was added later on tweaking some things to make them work properly, but that also means the game may not be without some issues when you enable stereoscopic 3D support. So have that in mind if you are already eager to get your hands on the game when it comes out on 20th September this year in US/Europe and 22nd in Japan, but of course you would be able to play it in normal 3D and not stereoscopic 3D mode as well.

The Game Batman: Arkham City Will Support 3D Vision on PC

Much like the previous Batman: Arkham Asylum game that was 3D Vision-ready game and looked great in stereoscopic 3D mode, the new Batman: Arkham City game will also support Nvidia’s 3D Vision for gaming in stereo 3D mode on the PC (3DTV Play for a 3D HDTV on PC). The stereo 3D support was officially announced, although the game is not advertised as 3D vision-ready yet, but that could also be due to the fact that it will come with stereoscopic 3D support for consoles as well, and so the focus will not be only the PC version this time. The game will apparently have stereoscopic 3D support for both the Xbox 360 version and the PlayStation 3 version and aside from being able to enjoy it on a big screen 3D HDTV with any of these consoles, you will also be able to play it in anaglyph 3D on a non-3D TV set. There is still no information however if the game will come with anaglyph 3D glasses bundled, or you will have to obtain them separately.

A Bit About Tim Burton’s Upcoming B&W 3D Movie Frankenweenie

We all know that Tim Burton usually makes a lot of interesting and original movies, some times a bit strange and far fetched, but that does not mean they are bad, just different. And apparently one of his upcoming movies called Frankenweenie that he is currently working on and scheduled for a release in 2012 will be one of these non-standard titles. The new Frankenweenie movie is based on a story that he has written and filmed under the same name back in 1984, but the remake he is preparing will be quite different, although the story will pretty much be the same. The new Frankenweenie movie will be in black and white like the original movie was, but it will also be a 3D movie and a stopmotion animation and not a live-action like the original was, and while all this sounds interesting, it could also a bit of a challenge to make.

But where is the real challenge in making this movie you may ask? Well, making a stop-motion animation requires you to shoot every scene frame by frame and it needs to be done with 3D equipment, so you need to do extra shots to get the right depth of everything on the scene. It is not clear if they are shooting in black and white 3D or in color 3D, but it makes more sense to shoot in color and then just process the footage in black and white later on.

3D TVs get better at 3D: Less ghosting, lower prices too

The Samsung PN51D8000

In our earlier tests of 3D TVs, one complaint we had—especially with LCD 3D TVs that used active-shutter glasses—was that we saw significant ghosting in many scenes and with our test patterns, where double images were visible even when the tester was wearing 3D glasses. But by and large, we're finding that second-generation 3D sets from manufacturers have addressed this issue to a degree where it's no longer a major problem.

In fact, in our latest TV Ratings (available to subscribers), ghosting is an issue with only a small number of sets. One reason is that some manufacturers, including LG and Vizio, are now exclusively using passive 3D technology, which works with passive polarized glasses, in all their LCD-based 3D TVs. We've found that one advantage of passive 3D TVs, which have a polarizing film on the TV, is that ghosting is minimal.

But we've also seen major improvements in ghosting from even those manufacturers, such as Samsung and Sony, that offer active LCD 3D TVs. The one exception: Sharp's 52-inch LC-52LE835U, a newer LCD set that still had significant ghosting. Unusually, that was not an issue with the 46-inch model in the same series we also tested.

Plasma TVs in general have had only minimal issues with ghosting, and they continue to do very well with 3D overall. One model—Samsung's 51-inch PN51D8000—rose above the crowd, turning in the best overall 3D performance we've seen so far.

Epson launches five new 3D projectors

Epson has announced its first 3D projectors with the launch of five new models at IFA in Berlin.

The new projectors claim to be the brightest on the market, aim to be more comfortable than rivals and also support wireless HD.

The projectors use Epson's 3LCD technology, are full HD, sport two HDMI inputs and work with active-shutter glasses.

Leading the line are the flagship EH-TW9000 and the EH-TW9000W (pictured), the latter capable of wireless HD transmission.

They claim a 200,000:1 contrast ratio, 2400 lumens brightness and 2.1x optical zoom lens. They come bundled with two pairs of 3D glasses.

Next come the EH-TW6000 and wireless EH-TW6000W, with 40,000:1 contrast, 2200 lumes and 1.6x optical zoom. You'll get one pair of 3D specs but the projectors do have an integrated set of stereo speakers.

The EH-TW5900 is the entry-level Epson 3D projector, and comes without any bundled glasses and makes do with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio and 2000 lumens brightness.

We'll have to wait until November for the two flagship EH-TW9000 and EH-TW9000W models but the other three are due in October.

London 2012 Olympics to be broadcast in 3D for 10 hours a day

The London 2012 Olympics will be broadcast in 3D for up to ten hours a day, making it the first Games ever to be covered in full 3D.

Panasonic announced on Thursday more than 200 hours of live coverage will be broadcast in ‘immersive 3D’ during the 17-day sporting extravaganza.

The events expected to be broadcast in 3D include the opening and closing ceremonies as well as over 12 sports including athletics, diving and swimming,

Commenting on the 3D coverage, Takumi Kajisha, managing executive officer of Panasonic, said: 'The Olympic Games has always been a pioneer in the development of TV broadcasting technologies, and has been on the cusp of innovation since the first live over-the-air broadcast was introduced in London in 1948.’

The BBC has already confirmed it is considering broadcasting the 100metres final in 3D but has ruled out showing the entire 17-day event in the format as it would interfere with its HD coverage.

Toshiba 55-inch ZL2 TV ditches the 3D glasses, tracks your face instead

Toshiba has announced a 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV, called the ZL2, at IFA in Berlin; it should allow users to watch 3D television without faffing with a pair of accompanying glasses.

The new model, which Toshiba has confirmed will go on sale in the UK, uses face tracking technology to maximise the 3D viewing experience in your lounge.

The ZL2 boasts a range of technologies designed to provide a decent 2D and 3D viewing experience, including face tracking, Resolution+, Auto Calibration, 2D to 3D conversion, and Smart TV features including Toshiba Places.

The ZL2 is the world’s first TV targeted at consumers to include a Quad Full HD display, offering a mega 3840 x 2160 resolution compared to the standard Full HD which is 1920 x 1080.

Toshiba may have made the most noise about its new Camileo Clip, X200 and X400 camcorders for IFA 2011, but the company slipped another rare beast into its booth. The Calimeo 3D model packs double the lenses into its palm-friendly chassis, recording Full HD 1920 x 1080 footage and allowing users to preview the 3D effect with a glasses-free autostereoscopic LCD display.
