Ako din last night, watched the previous Spider-Man films before diving into The Amazing Spider-Man.
I tried my best to watch these films with a fresh set of eyes. Simply because for the past 10 years we have been over saturated with Tobey's Spider-Man that the wonder of witnessing Spider-Man has kind of lost its luster. I tried to remove my jadedness before viewing these films and tried to watch it as if I was a little boy.
Spider-Man (Superbit)I was admittedly amazed the very first time I viewed this movie in advance screening back in 2002.
Never before has a movie made me believe a man can swing. The Special Effects was amazing as well as the casting. And it does have a really good script
Ten years later, it is a bit dated but it does not change the fact that this still is an amazing movie that will bring out the kid in us. Sure, Green Goblin's costume seems dopey, Sure, the movie is a little hokey but let's not forget that this is a Comic Book movie.
Before Avengers, there was Spider-Man. I will not forget the impact this movie made for audiences back in 2002.
My rating: A-
Spider-Man 2.1In 2004, Sam Raimi defies audiences expectations by creating a sequel that totally outshines the first movie.
Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus is definitely one of my favorite comic book super-villains put on film. He's up there very close to Ledger's Joker. A villain that you could actually side with. Heart felt performances by the cast who are now much more comfortable with their roles here. The action also is first rate, particularly the clock tower and train sequences. These parts are still as exciting and gripping as before.
My rating: A
Spider-Man 3Spider-Man 3 is yet another big budget action packed comic book movie that complements the first two movies well. The cast, particularly Tobey, Kirsten, James have definitely grown into their roles and deliver a truly believable relationship and tension between their characters. The special effects as expected were state of the art. The F/X work done with Sandman still brings visual eye candy to this day. All good points.
However, Spider-Man 3 is infamous to fans for failing to live up to their expectations. For me the parts where Spider-Man 3 fails are Venom and Gwen Stacy. These two characters are so obviously tacked on that if you remove their scenes it would have made this movie so much better.
Spider-Man 3 is far from bad, it just does not reach the dizzying heights the first 2 movies achieved.
And I believe this movie did not destroy the franchise the way Batman & Robin did for Batman.
My rating: B-
I'm going to see The new reboot this weekend, in the back of my mind I just feel this reboot came too soon. And I just can't stop thinking about "what Spider-Man 4 could have been?"
hehehe
