Soundcard or new receiver.
« on: Feb 13, 2011 at 02:40 PM »
Hi! im newbie at htpc... I want to have a better sound out of my htpc.
I have Old yamaha receiver that dont have digital input, only 5.1 analog input.
Im thinking about adding good soundcard to process the decoding and send to my receiver via analog or is it better to change my receiver with hdmi input, so i can send digital sound to the receiver and do all the decoding.

i have dualcore cpu and ati hd5770 videocard.

A new receiver makes a lot of sense. Doing the digital to analogue conversion outside the PC is usually a lot better, plus the fact that receivers usually do bass management and other functions a lot better.

Just remember that you should be using a standard resolution (most receivers won't take an hdmi feed of a non-standard video resolution).

What do you mean by this? Do i need to use 1080p if i want to use the HDMI output to my HDTV?

BTW my monitor is 25.5 LCDTV Native resolution is 1920x1200.

Yup. 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and other standard resolutions.

i dont recommend using analog output of your pc and sending it to your receiver coz it will produce pink noise

i have an idea di ba you are using hd5770 it has 1 hdmi and 2 dvi

maybe you can connect the dvi to your monitor and hdmi to the receiver so the sound will go to the receiver while maintaining your resolution  ;D

I think his receiver doesnt have that HDMI input. To think that his receiver doesn't even have optical or coaxial input but a 5.1 input.

I think a new receiver is in order.

brod sa pinoydvd ka nagtanong, naturally a new receiver would be recommended! yun nga matitino na audio/video system nakukulam pa para mag-upgrade eh!  ;D ;D ;D

makes sense though. you do need a new receiver. pag nasa pc casing ang sound card/DAC malaki possibility makasagap ng noise.

Bili ka nalang ng pre-owned receiver with optical input. Merong magagandang 10K or so offered once in a while sa Marketplace.

A decent soundcard with analog 5.1 out will cost you around 5K already - and hindi na madaling maghanap.
