Once we confirm that it can be hacked to play any region, we can safely say that the memorex would be a good buy right now.

Currently, Memorex MVBD2520 has 34 buyer reviews from Amazon, with the ff ratings breakdown:

5 star: (2)
4 star: (4)
3 star: (2)
2 star: (3)
1 star: (23)

Most of the bad comments stemmed from two major problems: (1) too noisy playback and (2) skipping. But the latest firmware update claims to solve these defects, as below quoted from the pdf instructions for installing version 118 firmware:

Quote
Note: This firmware update corrects the problem of some MVBD2520 units being noisy when playing DVD discs. Also corrected is the pause/skip noted on some units when playing DVD discs.

http://www.memorex.com/PageFiles/969/UpdatingFirmwareVersion%20118.pdf
http://www.memorex.com/PageFiles/969/C01_BDP_FE.rom

Ady001 has just bought Up Region B from me. Here's hoping he (and the others who has bought the unit as well) can confirm the region hack, and also the efficacy of the firmware update.

Paki-check mo yung firmware version ng unit mo sir. baka latest firmware na siya kaya di na ma-install. as per Memorex site, latest is v. 118.

For the moment of truth.

Yes, I bought the blu-ray from Razmaztaz. Here's how it goes:

This is the "Up" Blu-Ray I bought from Razmaztaz. As you can see it is evidently Region B:

When you put the disc without the code, the following message appears:

Now, following the code itself (idiin yung stop button sa unit mismo for about 5 seconds then dali-dali mong ipepress yung 8978) you get the grey screen:

Turn it off...

Feed the disc in...

And........

It actually works!

Though parang mas mabagal siya compared sa normal mode.

Remember that I only tried the "Up" blu-ray here so please exercise precaution. As always may policy naman ang CDR-King to test all you want in one day and they'll give you a full refund of the money.

I haven't yet harnessed the full extent of this player but it will take me 6 months or a year to tell people that it's a good buy.

And here's the short Pixar movie from the disc itself:

Now, time to buy that Akira Steelbook!

AFAIK I will be quite busy for the week but for 2,990 it's not that bad of a buy kung decent blu-ray player lang hanap mo. Still, I feel fearful that the region code might be detrimental to the stop button (kung madiin mo ng palagian, baka wala pang one year lubog na yung stop button ng player nyo.)

I have about 2 blurays coming on their way either next week or this week, and kung matutuloy yung Akira na blu-ray ko I think I could test more blus then.

Unfortunately, wala atang hack for DVDs :(...

AFAIK most of the memorex players have these region codes with numbers on it.

Hmmm... lloks like this is the choice as far as a cheap secondary player is concerned. Thanks for all those who road tested the product for regional compatibility. Sa katapusan pa naman ako bibili so ill still stay tuned for any updates you guys may have.

Got my Memorex bdp today from CDRKing Grand Central Monumento, last unit, hehe! Followed the rc hack, and voila! now i have my dedicated Region B player (as i already have 3 other bd players! and this is the fourth. well if i count the bdrom in my PC then thats 5 in all!)

what i can say is that slow nga ang loading time nya and it takes mga 10-15 seconds (bagal!) to switch to disc menu or when selecting scenes. Nonetheless, the qualty of the picture and sound is superb! i loaded up Despicable Me [region-free] and the DTS-HD Master outputs marvelously and faithfully! all 5 speakers are crystal clear and actually blaring! and the LFE is also flawless! Now ko lang na-appreciate na para palang salamin sa linaw ang PQ ng Despicable Me!

I also tried my region B Hero (Jet Li). The DTS-HDM English Audio is outstanding! Dumadagundong talaga yung takbo ng mga horses. And when i switched to the DD5.1 Chinese audio [baligtad, dapat itong Chinese ang DTS-HDM since ito ang original language, sheeesh!], the reproduction is likewise excellent. There is this curious setting in the Sub Menu--Cinema Voice, that when i turned it on, the sound was enhanced! (or just got louder. ;D I'm not sure but i indeed noticed that the audio ouput somehow improved.)

As for the issue na maingay daw siya during playback, wala akong marinig as in tahimik siya. i also haven't encountered any skipping (yet, hope wala nga, as this is the second issue). It has somewhat limited options sa setup but sufficient enough that it doesn't hamper the performance of the unit. It has USB and SD card slots.

Two major setbacks sa mga nagbabalak na gawin na rin nila itong primary SA nila:

(1) It cannot read movie files! Kahit .avi, only JPEG photos and MP3. one can just hope that this maybe fixed by a firmware update but i'm afraid that this is the nature of its design to not read video files. This is a big letdown, as far as capabilities for a bd player is concerned. Though for those who have LCD TVs that can read standard movie files [avi, mp4], it's still a feasible SA.

(2) it is indeed not region free for DVD, unfortunately. This is quite funny, as a unit that has a hidden hack to change regions for BD has no option whatsoever to alter DVD region coding! Actually, its Region 1 locked and confirmed by my R1 Thirteenth Floor. My R2 Finding Forrester failed and local R3 DVDs as well. (But i just found out that my locally bought Universal movies like The Fast and the Furious and The Good Shepherd played! so that means their region-free! and i think rightly so, coz the back covers do not indicate any region coding for all the Universal movies that i have. curious discovery!)

All in all, i'm satisfied so far coz the only reason i wanted this player badly was for me to be able to order and watch region B bds. at long last i found one! kaya matitis ko ang kabagalan at limited features nito coz it serves its sole purpose adequately.

i just hope this unit lasts! :)

I guess you really cant expect much from a blu ray player that cost less than P3K.
It's a good secondary player, period.

nonetheless, im still getting one para di naman malaspag yung lens ng PS3 ko. :)
the fact that there's a region hack for it couldnt hurt as well :D

I really hope this player stands the test of time and durability.
