This is my first plasma, and 2nd flat TV next to an LG 42LH70.

All I can think about now is, "I should have bought a plasma to begin with" :P

A gaming videocard set to 1080P, would a plasma 720p able to produce a presentable display? Is it possible that my desktop display resolution would scale down? and in turn will have large icons and fonts on my screen.

Wala tsip! Lowering your lights will just lower the "reflectivity", to eliminate the issue, your lights should be totally off for the most part.

Para sa akin tsip! Gusto ko ng reflective panel mas glossy yung pic ;)

A big thanks to Sights and Sounds for allowing us to review the panel!

Thanks and regards sir...

To those who are worried about the rising black level issue on Panny's 2009 and 2010 plasmas, the good news is that it has been reported that Panasonic fixed the problem for the 2011 models.

Cnet editor David Katzmaier reports:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20066427-1/panasonic-plasma-black-levels-no-longer-worsen/?tag=contentMain;contentBody

I had been advising friends to wait until Panny fixes this problem before buying.  But with this reported fix for 2011, plus sir Carlo's positive review, I'm now confident enough to recommend the X30 to friends who are looking for an entry-level plasma.

However, they're still worried about the glossy screen.  I have to explain that a glossy screen will have reflections, but a matte screen will produce light blacks and pale colors.

=======================

Here's my 2009 post on the subject:

For TVs, the discussions are more one-sided, limited to an aversion for reflections.  But for laptops, there's a more balanced debate going on concerning glossy vs. matte; however, there are more users who prefer matte screens for laptops.

Related article on the issue of reflectivity for Mac notebooks:

Glossy or Not?

With the exception of the MacBook Pro, all of Apple’s notebooks are available exclusively with a glossy display. The benefit of a glossy display is an improved contrast ratio but the downside is it reflects more ambient light, particularly when you have an unusually strong light source (e.g. sitting in front of a window or being outside with the Sun).

With the MacBook Pro you have the option of either a glossy or anti-glare display, the question that remains is: which should you choose?

As you’d expect, the decision really falls upon your intended use for the notebook. Indoors, the glossy display was much nicer in my opinion. Blacks appeared blacker and the screen was much more pleasant to look at:

Matte screen (left) vs. Glossy (right)

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3246&p=9

In fact, I even managed to convince our flat panel review master Carlo777 to change his mind about matte screens  ;):

This was a post made by barrister about the advantage of a "reflective" screen, and probably one of my favorite post out there.

Now, I love glossy reflective screens and honestly, I may not get a T.V with a super anti-reflective screen coating in the future. ;)

I bought my Dad a Panasonic 42X30 last Saturday, July 16 from Sir Vic and SnS and I must say, for the moment, I am his favorite son.  :P ;D ;D ;D

Once again, Sir Carlo777's review put me over the top (and the great price of Sir Vic naturally) and bought this gorgeous TV.

Even though sir Carlo777's opinion of this TV is that it was the same as last year's 42X20, I thought that the added feature of a USB media player (this is almost becoming mandatory on all TV's) and option for WiFi connectivity would put this way over 42X20. But then, it was Carlo777's review of the 42X20 that made me buy that TV in the first place. :D

I think I should just refrain from reading Sir Carlo777's reviews. I'm running out of money! :P

Pareho lang ang P42X30S sa P42X30.

The letter "S" is a country code which stands for "Singapore."

Thanks for the review dude, i just noticed when i wen to sns. the color, if not the black level on the x30 looks lighter? or is it just me? They have an x20 also running, it was richer in color compared to the x30.

I am deciding kasi on which model to get. ang plus sa x30 is the added usb playability and net things, which i will rarley use hahaha

@adonph
did they have the lights on? It's hard to appreciate plasma w/ lots of ambient light.

When I was there, I had them turn off the lights to appreciate the PQ.  Needless to say, I went home with an x30 :)

hows the x30 sa gaming? any idea?

for movies alam ko ok siya.

Thanks for your reply

Boss your input on the "reflectivity" issue is the best info I got during my whole stay in PDVD! I dig reflective screens now! You're the man! You're my brother from another mother!

@otep72

Got your PM! Let's spend more boss! Johnny and I hang around in SnS usually Saturday 5pm. We'll show you how to throw away some ham! ;D

@adonph

X30 is cool for gaming! Near zero input and pixel response time!

I have both.  One glaring difference is when channel surfing when watching cable tv.  X30 is faster to switch between channels.  X20 has lag.   ;D

Thanks for the input, is the break in still applicable to this model? did you guys notice the black level? when i saw it sa sns parang lacking sa color. Or ako lang yun?

I am deciding within the week to make an upgrade.

Will appreciate inputs, thanks

panong hilaw? if less saturated sya. i think that might be good, coz x20 has over-saturated colors and crapty greyscale out of the box, but correctable..

hmmm, how was it compared to x20? the best way to compare them is to have them set both tv to cinema mode then contrast=70 colortemp=warm tapos ask them to play a scene that have lots of greens and reds.

tpos check for accuracy, green that is close to natural green but not bluish green (x20 green is kinda bluish even in cinema mode) then red should not overpower the whole picture (x20 has overly reddish greyscale).
(greyscale is correctable in the service menu)

never trust dynamic mode, it looks good in stores but not at home.

ang pangit ng dynamic, I never use it.  True cinema palagi.  Siguro what I would suggest is to give it a really good few minutes of watching, so that your eyes could adjust sa levels of color and blacks.

thanks for your help on the x30, i finally made the purchase. i put it in true cinema, question though i was playing book of eli, do you guys know the first scenes where in denzel was walking sa road and then the guys ambushed him? in that scene there are a lot of clouds, some of theme have green layers. normal ba yun?

btw hows "true cinema" compared to "cinema" mode? ang alam ko lang ksi is that gamma has an s curve that goes from 2.1 to 2.2 dynamically in "true cinema" .. i dont have that option sa x20 but im curious.

If you will be watching movies most of the time, then go with the 42X30. Plasma is still the way to go when it comes to picture quality and motion handling. plus, you get extra features like built-in media player and LAN connectivity.

pag LCD kasi hindi masyadong pinapansin ang panasonic, main line nila is plasma.

bakit nga kaya samantalang pag tingin mo sa catalog nila , puro IPS panel ang LCDs nila. sumusugal pa ang marami sa ibang brand with ips panels gayung Panasonic explicitly state na IPS ang panel nila.
