the trials of upgrading to a new AV receiver...HELP!!!
« on: Jun 30, 2011 at 09:16 PM »
After years of using a Yammy RXV496...I've finally decided to upgrade to a newer model.

Primary considerations for the upgrade unit:
-Black color (funny...I know, going for an all-black set-up)
-75w-110W/ch...enough for my primary speakers which are Wharf 9CS & 9.5 up front.
-at least 3 HDMI ins
-Dolby True HD/dts MA decoders
-5.1 would be okay...as I want it to stay that way...it's only for my bedroom anyways.
-set-up mics? (wanna try this)

I've been looking at Pioneer VSX-820, Yamaha RXV465, HK AVR 160, Onkyo 509.

I need help...your inputs would be greatly appreciated.

TIA to all...

Since you already have Wharfe CS and 9.5, it has to be a Yamaha.

But the Yamaha has to be at least a 600 series.  You get a jump in quality starting with 600.  However, avoid the 665, since it's underpowered.

Available now is the 667.  The latest is the 671, but I don't know if it's already available here.

Yamaha (higher models), its really easier to use. ONKYO is ok also but havent really tried it. You should audition so you could really compare it also ;)

...thanks for the replies guys.

However, I failed to also say that a primary condition is budget also...can only go for something 24K below.

@barrister & at_sunset_blvd, I've always been partial to Yammys since I do have a primarily Wharfe speaker set...just wanted to see what the other guys think of other AVRs for my set-up...your opinions are appreciated.

Also in consideration is the Denon 1611.
