as i've posted before, huwag niyong patulan yung Denon 1500 - mumurahin yung model na 'yun. ang mamahalin yung 1800 and 3500 series. the gold-colored Sony 555 is also expensive for P7K, puwede siguro at P3K if working A-okay. if it has an X before the model number, sirain 'yan compared with the original 555esD. i have those gold X.. ES series lahat nagluluko after a year of use. BTW, i bought those units at P800 each. ngayon, if i can find one - P500 each na lang ang presyo, even for gold units, dito sa Davao.

sir, i want another player for personal use... my fingers are itching for some "kalikot" and upgrade.  ;D ;D ;D

JojoD,

hintayin na natin ang mid January, siguradong may dala ako. i was in Manila last week, pero madalian. kung ipapadala kasi natin sa Pantranco medyo mahal na rin - as much as P500 per unit. anyway mas mura na and CDP dito ngayon, di katulad ng dati. baka 337esD and dalhin ko instead of the X333es, plus one or two more.

Foo,

you're right about the NS-500M. it should be priced maximum of P4K, depending on condition. its recommended re-sale value at Orion bluebook is only $40. very low compared with used NS-1000's $520.

below is an example of a gold-cased Sony CDP-x555es with a problem. i also got 2 units of x333es with same defect. bought these units good condition last year at P800 each here in Davao. in less than one year, reading problems started. even after adjusting the trimpots, the problem returns after a day or two. this never happens to my older 222es, 333es, 337es, 338es, 555es and 557es, which are quite reliable.

i believe this is similar in looks with the 555esj. haven't cleaned it recently though due to its problem.

the x555es nude, the two trimpots for focus and tracking are visible on center, just right of the transport system.

Master Jojo,

ano po ba ibig sabihin nyo sa 'upgrade" ng CDP. Is there any upgrade I can do for my Sony CDP's? My brother's and i have a 333ES, a 337ES and a 502ES in our possession.

Foo,

ang ibig sabihin ko lang sa upgrade is yun mga parts nun cdp ko like yun opamps, caps, etc. kung ok na sa iyo yun sound ng cdp mo I suggest you leave it be. mga hi-end models naman yan meron ka so suppose dapat ok na tunog niyan. yn 502ES meron ako nyan, sarap upgrade ng opamp niyan.  ;D

sarap lang kasi experiment lalu na pag nagiiba response and character ng cdp. ;D ;D ;D

there were still two Sony ES CDPs at Little Chatty when I went there last week.  303ES and 502ES I think.  Dun sa shop sa loob, I saw two 228ES.

happy hunting!  :)

sir, i've been to the pier a couple of time already but am quite confused as to where little chatty's is. i know that chatty's is the store with a variety of surplus audio (amps, cdps, speakers, tape decks) inside the shop and displayed at the entrance as well.

i was there at the pier last saturday and i was able to get a 228esd from a store inside the one-storey structure (yung parang mini-mall where majority of the shops sell chinese-made electronics, clothing stuff and those big-ass tvs).

sayang yung 303 and 502.

san po yung little chatty's?

thanks.

Sirs, If you want a cd player im letting it go my philips cd recorder. It has a two tray, one for the source and one for the recorder. But you can play a cd with those two tray and you can also record from different source, from analog to tapes.  Im not using it kasi sayang naman kung hinde magamit. And theres plenty here pala in our pinoy DVD wants to have extra cd player. Its a double purpose a player and a recorder.

It comes with a remote and a downloaded manual from the inernet. SEnd me sms if your interested 09198087892. Sayang naman kung alikabok lang ang makinabang!

Meron na rin digital out, toslink or coax.  As long as I can remember, even my very first Technics CD player I got in 87 already had digital output.  They are present in most mid to flagship CD players in the past and are fairly common in modern players.  Those surplus CD players I've seen are mostly 5-8 years old and are mid-priced to flagship models in Japan when they were new.    To be sure, you can always ask or inspect the unit's backplane.

so I guess one of the difference with these models is they cannot procees 196khz/24bit signals, well what's the highest can they process?

CDs contain audio data encoded at 44.1khz/16bits.  There are no CD players that can process 196/24 signals right out of the CD disc..  You probably mean oversampling CD players.  Most CD players oversample at 4X and 8x and some even reclock at 20-bit  or use 1-bit processing championed by Technics.  You often see these numbers on the face plate.  Just check them out.  I've seen 18-bit 8X oversampling CD players at the pier.

Upsampling CD players are another thing.  I don't recall seing one at the pier.

Though there are separate outboard DACs like the Purcell/Delius that can upsample CDs to 196/24(not at the pier), there are so few integrated CD players that upsample to 196/24, like the Wadia and Meridian.  Very expensive though.  But there are quite a few DVD players that do.   And if your receiver or preamp can already upsample to 196/24, then your CD signal via the digital connection could benefit from that as well.

meron pa sir, pero hindi na upscale models. mura pa rin P500 each from warehouses, up to P1,200 from traders. buti na lang nakaipon na ng magaganda.

Sir Sandawa,

Another set of ignoramus questions po.

What's a first generations CDP?
Are these the first CDP units put out?
What brands would this refer to? what models?
are these collectors items? Shouldn't we be buying these up at the surplus stores?
But does that means they won't have very good musical abilities?

Foo.

the G1 CDPs were those made in early '80s, very bulky and quite expensive. sound is clinical and some said causes hearing fatigue. that provided a reason for the Brits and Yankees to build separate DACs (sold them gadgets at high prices even to poor guys like us). mint and working G1 CDPs are good collectors' items especially the early Sony ES series -- 101, 701, etc.

Just curious why bother with first generation CDPs that were quite notorious for nearly unlistenable sonics?  The first consumer SONYs and Phllips, while built like tanks, used inaccurate 14-bit and 16-bit DACs considered operationally inferior to today's highly accurate 18-20-bit converters.   ???
