Custom PSU for rDAC
« on: Jul 08, 2011 at 03:49 PM »
Hi everyone,

I recently acquired an arcam rdac and i am wondering if there are any alternatives to the wall wart that came with it.  Im not sure if it would make any difference but im thinking that a more stable linear power supply will maximize the potential of the dac. TIA

You can do modifications on your switching power supply wall wart specifically targeting reduction of:

1. Radiated/Conducted EMI
- increasing the value of the X1 or X2 differential capacitor

2. Bulk Ripple
- using low ESR bulk capacitor

3. Output ripple & noise
- using low ESR output capacitor like Nichicon PM or Rubycon ZL series capacitor

4. Primary drain to source voltage (Vds) by optimizing primary snubber circuit
- typically switching power supplies that are wall wart are using flyback topology which by practice has very large Vds.

Cost of this kind of exercise maybe cheaper or has same cost as buying a linear power suply.

are you having issues with your unit? otherwise if it ain't broke, why fix it?
can you post pictures of your wall wart showing nameplates please?

Thanks so much for the inputs.  No issues so far. actually, i am currently enjoying the unit. I am using J River 16.  I just got the idea from several forums.  There is actually a custom psu (teddy pardo) for the rdac however it costs so much.  I just thought maybe there is a local alternative for a more stable linear psu for the dac.

Sir TonyT,

Here is the link for the third party psu (medyo expensive) http://www.teddypardo.com/Products/Power%20Supplies/rDacPS.html

I don't know how to post pictures but here is a link which has a picture of the wall wart of the arcam rdac.

Did you get the rdac locally? If yes, how much? Thanks
