Yes retro, audio ain't cheap unfortunately. The Kleos is only middle end in the cartridge heirarchy where there exist many carts costing much more ($10,000 up). Mass production and phono cart manufacturing unfortunately don't coexist. Low production numbers + demand = high price. Same situation for other cart makers like Dynavector, Clearaudio, Koetsu, Zyx, Transfiguration, etc. Lyra in particular just has one Japanese master craftsman who hand assembles all its cartridges.
But if good audio is critical to you, then the Kleos offers great value relative to competition. It incorporates novel design ideas that enables it to punch way over its price range performance-wise. Coupled to the Artemis Labs preamp, it enabled my analogue setup to leap several levels above the performance of my digital setup (Rotel transport + Bel Canto DAC). Previously it was almost dead even.
