bro, it sounds as good as i can remember it... i couldn't really tell if the tweaks had any improvement or any change at all, since i haven't used it for at least 4 months, but i do remember how it sounds in general... extended highs, not very weighty but fast & tuneful bass, etc... tony said replacing old electrolytic caps is a standard tweak since such parts dry up and degrade over time.

not yet, but they say its a clean sounding amp, i'm lookin for an ss counterpart to my tube monoblocks which are clean sounding as well (btw they cost almost the same as ure mx-1). best of both worlds i guess since the mx-d1 (mx-1s successor) is very expensive :-\
plus the form factor is attractive since its not as bulky as other amps.

BGA VI,

The mute and other functions of your RXV-630 RC may work with AX-1200. Manufacturers usually use the same code numbers for their amps/receivers. What I'm worried about is whether the amp is still available. Good luck!

P.S. If u got the AX-1200 and ur RC didn't work with it, just send me PM.
Listen to the music...not to the equipment!

45mm, these are the onkyo & yamaha models i would be interested in:

Onkyo Integra A-817XX, A-819RS, A-820GT
Most integras at the pier are in this category.  They basically have the same 205W - 210W power consumption so their output power is probably 100wpc and above.  The 820GT is rated 110W/ch.  Model numbers that i've seen are 817 and 819.  The last 2 letters indicate the year of manufacture, where "XX" are the latest models (1987). . . .

Because of this thread, I know the history of my amp now Ü Its an Integra 817XX which i did not know anything about, except its visible functions, much less what the "XX" extension meant. It was brought from Japan.

Would you know anything about the Marantz PM 54DS? I was told that the PM stands for Philips when it bought out Marantz?  What about the DS extension? This, too, is from Japan. I was told that it was a showroom unit.

:) Thank you!

kaffee1, i think marantz pm-54ds is an entry level integrated amp late 80's model... there are higher models 64, 74, 84 up to 94... the "PM" prefix is still being used by marantz in new models... it probably stands for "Pre-Main amp" coz that's what the japs call an integrated amp... the "DS" i'm not sure, but i did see the sequence of models being mentioned... PM-54 --> PM-54D --> PM-54DS... so that probably means the DS is newer than either a D or none... not sure just guessing.

Thanks, AB, for putting up with newbie questions! Would the Onkyo be classified entry-level as well? :)

To my knowledge, an Onkyo affixed with the Integra name is not entry level.

Hmmm. interesting thought there. Yes, it does sound good. Was wondering about its Contrabass feature initially, till I discovered that it mimics a sub even if it is hooked up to a pair of 3-ways only. Btw, it also has dials for the VCR, so I suppose it was one of those models which already had the video sound output in place?

Thank you!

The place can really be overwhelming of choices.  Good thing for me they don't accept credit cards ;D

My last visit there was in Feb. So far, mababait naman sila.  As you walk through the stalls, there'll be many who will offer their wares, short of begging.  Just tell them you're just canvassing and not yet buying.  The salesguy in one stall with an enormous inventory of amps and receivers seemed accomodating enough.  They're ready to have your choice tested without a promise to buy right away.   But if you see and test a really good unit, haggle for and get it right away.  Chances are you won't see it again when you return to buy.    ;D
