guys,

Help naman just a thought pwede kaya 2 rectifier ( SS and Tube ) in one amp?? plan ko yun have limited space kaya naisip ko yun.
No.

You can have an external power supply though. For your intents and purposes (whatever they are), you can ask the builder to make a separate PSU chassis which will connect to your amplifier chassis via umbilical cord (high voltage required). With a connector such as Clifconn, you can have them make you two (2) PSUs, one tube rectified and one SS rectification. It has to be separate because only one PSU can be active at one time.

Why do you want this?

By the way, i do use hybrid (tube AND SS, NOT tube OR SS) in one of my amps.

Dun ounta namin mamaya. Thanks.

hans, are you saying that your current amp has SS rectification and lacks "sweetness?"

some people claim that tubes give "sweetness" and SS gives dynamics, but i would say it is a generalization.

it is about the design... not only the PSU, also of the amp.

Phasetron 'yung pangalan ng shop.  It is besides 5th Avenue.  Mas maganda kung sa gabi kayo pupunta kasi andoroon si Mr Sevilla, usually, at around 630pm.

Hans,

When I had the amp built, I wanted it to "rock". changing the parts might help but like what sir arnoldc said, its in the design of the amp. maybe andrew can suggest something to suit your needs  :)

Hans,

either way the amp should be moved to a bigger chassis, medyo masikip na if you want to change to tube rectification...ipon na lang then convert to amp to monoblocks  ;D

mahirap yata yang gusto mo pare, although some prefer that el34 be used as its intended as a pentode, maybe you can ask andrew to add a triode mode, para mas sweet yung sound but might not be as detailed, and less power. bili ka na lang ng SET hehe

btw, i had my David 1 amp tweaked as follows:
1. changed ultralinear mode to pentode mode.
2. setup 6550 as fixed bias (with cathode follower)

the best result, though, is that it has retained it sweet sound ala triode with lots of PRAT.  sarap pakinggan... it can also drive my DQ10s with relative ease.   ;D

swerte ko naman all of a sudden meron ako nito for tomorrow's session... sayang sir geko di ka pwede.

i have just arrived in the office and i'm very late (11:30am)... di naman ako masyado napuyat (1:30am) pero i made the mistake of turning on the amp this morning... i can't get enough of the sound!!  kaya tuloy i left home almost 11:00am after listening to the same CD's i already listened to last night.

maganda kasi ang tunog... i could still remember the sound of kimpao's scott playing beverly staunton... on my sansui w/c is my warmest, most tube-sounding ss amp, beverly staunton sounds satisfyingly sweet but tube amps are on a different level as far as sweetness is concerned... at first i thought they almost sound the same, but once you pinpoint where the differences lie, they become glaring differences... it's the end of innocence, you can't go back once you've crossed the line, you are bitten by a bug, withdrawal effects haunt you... a tube amp surprises you by making a familiar CD sound different.

i'm getting one by middle of this year, maybe earlier... its just a matter of which tube, which circuit, which chassis... its a great time to be an audio enthusiast!!

ST-70, sir akyat ;D ;D ;D ;D

kung affordable lang sana ito.. cheapest na nakita kong price is 28k.

i remember there was once an AMX amp based on a single tube per channel.. cant remember which tube but i suspect it was EL34.. it was modestly priced at 8k.

i wonder how much mr. andrew would price a PP/PSE amp based on 2 EL34/ch ?

after seeing how 12wpc can drive my ms908, it seems i dont need too many tubes, i can always use an ss amp for extra oomph.

you can have have the el34s in PSE (parallel single ended) for relatively more power and your choice if you want it tube or ss rectified might go more or less 20k depending on parts.

OT: I saw this interesting single ended design using 6sn7 tubes as predrivers, 2a3 tubes as drivers and a pair of el34s as power tubes connected in parallel. hmmnnn

john, sayang lang yung 2A3

besides an EL34 is not that hard to drive, even a 12AU7 can drive it, heck, you can even make an EL34 amplifier without a driver stage.

Arnoldc,

Just got curious on the rationale of using the 2a3 (even saw another using a 300B) as the driver instead of the el34 for the design i saw...thanks for the tip ! 8)

Maybe they can also custom built these mini monoblocks near the price.

from one review:

"Their Antique Sound Labs division produce a small, lightweight, 8-10 watt tube mono-block (one amplifier for each stereo channel) amp called the Wave-8.

It uses two inexpensive tubes in each amp to create what I consider one of the great bargains in hi-fi today. These amps cost $99 each — $119 if you want a cover for the top and a detachable AC power cord (I’ll explain about that below). I’m not quite sure how they get so much sound for this price, but because they make the components inside to order and assemble it overseas, it’s quite an amazing feat.

How do they sound? Very, very good for any price. Fine bass, smooth midrange and a pretty good high end. This is compared to a lot of other more expensive tube amps that I’ve heard. There is also a growing groundswell in the audio underworld about modifying the AV-8s. Do-it-yourselfers have reported amazing improvements by changing just a few of the capacitors, etc. inside. I’m told by other friends that it changes a good amp into one bordering greatness."

I have not thorougly read yet regarding the tubes used.

I think i saw an integrated amp using the same tubes some months ago, but it was using a pair of them so its likely around 5 watts per channel i think ???

I was at phasetron last friday, at around 3:30mp. May nakasabay nga kami don alam nya yung speaker ni anthony so i guess taga pdvd yon. Sayang di ko nakausap si Mr. Sevilla. This amp has a selector for pentode, triode saka may isa pa i forgot lang kasi sarap makinig. Do you think it is possible na maging naticeable yung bass kung ipa pa tweak. Kahiyang magtanong kasi di pa naman ako bibili kasi nag iipon pa ako eh. Thanks.
