with only 2 tubes (what?! no rectifier/driver tubes??) the 3-watt EL84 can easily be mistaken for a preamp.
note: the price tag in the pic is for the subwoofer at the bottom (not seen).... i think this one will cost less than 10k (i hope)!!
when the guys were hooking it up to drive the big Alon speakers i was thinking, oh no bad choice man that speaker is too big... the Alon speakers are massive mini-ref type speakers, you know the ones we fondly call floorstanding bookshelf?... kimpao was turning the volume pot ever so slowly until we started to hear some sound....
"sige ikot mo pa!".... ikot naman si kimps.
wow impressive sound, huh.... i said: "baka maganda yan kung iisa lang ang gitara", which prompted a switch to a more challenging CD/track.... tignan nga natin kung kaya ng low bass..... 2nd track of audiophile voices 1 has some low bass.... "sige ikot mo pa"...... wow, kayang-kaya maglabas ng low bass sa 12" woofer ng Alon..... seconds later it let out a medium-size F-a-R-R-R-T..... "dre, umutot si eva cassidy"...
hehehe.... distortion na pala..... just part of the fun.... di daw kaya magbuhat ng mabigat nauut00t!.... we took it to spectra and played it with the AE evo3, Wharf Pacific evo8 and a Klipsch bookshelf.... it sounds awesome for such a small amp --- very clear and detailed.... while playing the wharf (love this little speaker) i swear you could not tell which speaker was playing, you would think it was one of the 3 floorstanders.... of course we were only playing tracks with little to no bass, mostly acoustic & vocal tracks, at low volume.
when you turn it up louder, its limitations quicky become obvious, so it needs to be matched with super sensitive speakers.
