Stark3's audio DIY
« on: Apr 26, 2012 at 01:04 PM »
Hello PDVD!

I just thought of sharing my DIY journey here. :D After owning and enjoying the works of sir Anthony (diy_master) and sir JojoD, I've come to appreciate how DIY items can be as good as (or better) than commercial offerings, kaya ito. ^^

Nag appeal sa akin ang full range speakers, and at the time na plan ko sya, walang ganung local DIY offering. Nag splurge ako ( :D ), here's what I got

4" full range speakers, purchased from Planet-10 Hifi ! Based sa Fostex 126en na driver, pero measured to be matched pairs, also modified with various tweaks like EnaBL treatment ( pa tingin na lang sa diyaudio for the details :) )

Here's a picture of the drive unit:

Since part of the tweak is to provide a thin coating on the paper of the drive unit, nag request na rin ako na lagyan ng kulay. :D

Included measurements given by the driver provider.

Sa research ko, the stock Fe126en itself is a good driver. With the various Planet-10 tweaks, sobrang ok na daw. Naisip ko lang na since maganda ang driver, kailangan i match with a good enclosure design na din. ^^ I got a paid plan set for what others consider to be the best enclosure for the Fe126en:

5 feet tall ang finished enclosure! Medyo challenging. Hehehe

Markaudio Alpair 6.2. Maganda ang nagiging rep ng Markaudio drivers sa diyaudio site, with potential to be better than Fostex units. ^^

Here's a pic of the actual unit:

I tried using just a circular saw to make the wood cuts, yun lang medyo mahirap na makakuha ng accurate, square cuts, especially since ang target ko is to make the cuts accurate to within a millimeter or less.

Ni upgrade ko na din yung fence na gamit nya, to get the precise cuts I'm looking for.

Incra lead screw based table saw fence. Automatic locking to within 1/32" increments, with fine adjustments to within 1/1000 of an inch. :D (Yep na OC ako. Hahahaha)

Laki ng difference with the upgraded setup. With the table saw, 2.5 hours, naka prep na ako ng enough wood for 2 pairs ( one for me and for the commissioned piece).

Close up ng prepped wood.

Will update this thread this weekend, sa Sat na uli ako may oras na ituloy yung project. :)

Mga pahabol. ^^

Ito pala yung enclosure design for the commissioned piece and for my personal desktop speakers:

microFonken enclosure for Alpair 6 / 6.2. (Yep, medyo fan ako ng designs nila Dave (Planet10) at Scott (scottmoose) ng diyaudio. :) )

http://delphiforfun.org/programs/cutlist.htm

Pwede mo ilagay yung dimensions ng wood pieces mo, i calculate nya paano mo i-cut to minimize wastage ng wood.

Hayz.... Kung minamalas nga naman talaga. Not much progress this week.

Very clear with plenty of details, kahit ngayon pa lang at very low volume mas gusto ko na sya gamitin for music kesa yung current floorstanders ko (tweaked 10" coaxials from sir Anthony) For movies, no contest yung coaxials pa rin, bitin sa bass yung Markaudio. But then 4" lang naman yung driver, so medyo expected na yun, saka wala pang enclosure.

Less than 20/1000 of an inch difference from front to back. Within normal range na. :)

Direct connection from laptop to amp using a 3.5mm to 2x RCA plug na pina custom ko dati from sir Cjtjader here in PDVD.

Hayz.

Anyway, updates:
Nabuo na ang 70% roughly ng enclosure. Glued and brad nailed na yung 1 side, back, bottom, pati na rin yung port spacers sa ilalim. Holes for speaker binding post have been drilled and countersunk.

Some pictures of test fitting before gluing / nailing:

Next items on to do list
 - provide holes for the speaker cutout, as well as a rabbet to flush mount the driver to the baffle.
 - make a CLOSE fitting brace for driver from hardwood

Hahahaha.

Hehehe. Thanks for the encouragement guys.

@Sir Timber : hmm ... tempting. Hahaha. Pero baka takaw tingin lang yun on my part. Ang naka plan na kasi for the speaker enclosure builds (itong current, saka sa isa pang desktop speaker) e lacquer paint. Piano finish para dito sa current, then I'm thinking a combination of metallic blue and matte black for the next.

So far, nagawa na yung speaker cutout and circular rabbet for flush mounting.

Meron na akong tanguile cut to size for the bracing para snug sya sa loob ng enclosure without the speaker driver. :(

Lesson learned : Measure twice, cut once.

About dun sa speaker cutout and rabbet, parehong gawa using a plunge router at saka circle cutting jig.

Start with the outermost pass. Each pass, paliit ng paliit yung diameter ng gawa mong circle. Inabot ako ng 3 passes para sa akin. After the 3rd pass, adjustment uli sa size ng circle, tapos alisin na yung depth limiter ng plunge. Pwede nang gawin yung cutout.

Yep. May mga DIY sound treatment ideas na akong naka pila after these desktop speaker enclosures. :)

But not your ordinary 1/2" plywood...

From my experience with other mini projects, once cut mo yan may makita ka nang void (butas) sa loob.

Good choice, tuffply is the best we have locally. I believe they are even better than some baltic birch plywood commonly preferred by woodworkers in the US... and Yes, they cost twice as much...

Nice... Didn't know that piece of info about Tuffply.

Hmmm...

Hopefully at least by this weekend may oras uli ako, tho subukan ko pa rin umusad maski paunti unti kahit weekday.

Test fit with Markaudio driver.
