7.1 , 5.2 or just 5.1?
« on: Aug 03, 2012 at 12:31 PM »
I feel the upgarde itch is about to bite soon but before I let it affect me again I would need opinions and suggestion from the masters here.

About 30sqm meter 14x20x9 room dimension

1. Which is better 7.1 , 5.1 or 5.2?
2. Will I benefit having 2 sets of surrounds? Rear and sides
3. Night and day difference ba having dual subs? (Svs pb12) Considering my small room.
4. Should I just stick with my 5.1 setup? (Rtis with power amp and svs) and just invest on acoustics?

Thanks!

most of your questions are answered on the other threads. i'll just suggest start scratching your itch with acoustic treatments if your room is still untreated.

Below are my opinions:

1. If your couch is not against the wall and you can physically have speakers properly located behind you, then consider 7.1 if you like. (Though if your also picking up a new receiver and plan to get one that supports widths - i'd rather go with 'width speakers' rather than back surrounds)

2. It all comes down to proper speaker locations - if you can mount them where they should be mounted, then you'l benefit on material that utilizes them.

3. I've tried running dual-subs on a 20sq.m. room and its tough to go back to a single sub after :). It really balances-out the bass around the room too. (At this point - i probably wouldnt even consider a receiver that didn't support atleast 2 subs just so I have options).

4. Definitely !! I'd do this first before even thinking of any of the stuff above.

Maximize your current set-up first by putting acoustic treatments.

My HT is 35 sq mtrs (not too far from yours) and running dual subs made the bass response a LOT better. I'm using two SVS PB12NSDs by the way. I wouldn't trade this dual sub set-up for a single SVS Ultra. Not unless it's also dual! ;D

Ok before my plan upgrades I needed approval from the commander in cheif WAF dual subs approved :) acoustics? Since its a bedroom setup ( ht-ish with pj 100 inches ) she is not that 100% with acoustics. A couple will do and couple meaning wall where my stage is and a bit on the sides 1/4 part of the side walls where my FS is. What acoustic should I get? For the back and a bit of the sides

Acoustic treatment is very important on either 5.1 or any multi-speakers set-up. Thought it's not as critical as the 2 channel system. I can say the first requirement is just kill the echo in the room, this is to really appreciate the discrete sound coming from each speakers, fronts, center and back. ECHO really makes the sounds coming from each speakers a wrong impression of sound reproduction. For example the difference sounds of the chamber and a Hall are really visible and have a correct and real processing.
Other thing to consider are the base traps, this will really add enjoyment if you really hear the thundering bass on your listening position. You don't need multi-sub or expensive subs on a small to medium size room. If Bass traps are properly implemented with the help of correct placement you will enjoy your set-up.
HT Setup is just a matter of correct set-up both equipment and proper placement of speakers, room acoustic is a given matter as your HT Place.

Dito muna ako. Room treatment is considered one of the best upgrades.

And given the options na 7.1 or 5.2, sa 30 sq meters, i'd go for 7.2.  :D

Side question regarding the dual subs.
Should it be the same model or can it be different brands/models.
Any guidelines on dual subs

Sir malaki ba difference ng front wides?

It fills the gap between your L/R and your surround speakers, and can sometimes widen the apparent soundstage. Try to do a pan and see if the gap bothers you. If it does, then front wide speakers might help.
